***LOVE!! Use referral code DDavis11970 and get $25 Off Bill***

DONNA DAVIS, HOUSTON - 2014-10-25 10:39:34

Use my referral code when you sign up and get a $25 discount! It really works!! I researched many electric companies before I chose Champion. I was moving into a new apartment by myself (no roommates) so I wanted an affordable plan with a low rate. I have been with Champion for about 5 months and I absolutely love it! What’s cool is they email you a weekly usage report so you can compare the previous week’s usage with your current week’s usage. Even though I already have a low rate, I can adjust my thermostat according to what my usage is. You can manage your account and make payments online which is very convenient. Because I used someone's referral code, I got my $25 discount applied to my second bill which made me very happy!

Charlie, Midland - 2014-10-07 18:33:00

I wanted to repost my rating, because I have not had any issues whatsoever with Champion in the five months being with them. Also, I had used one of the referrals here and got my $25.00 off my bill like they said I would. I wan't to thank all of the people that has used my referall code to save even more off my monthly bill. So, BIG THANK YOU!! (I just signed up with Champion energy. I was with Sharyland and they deregulated, causing me to find a new provider. I tried to do my homework and found this review site. I am impressed with the reviews and what set them apart was someone with Champion monitors all reviews and responds to all of them. Good or bad. I called them to get service, but they didn't have Sharyland yet. I left them my phone number and thought no one would ever call me back. I was wrong! Paula called like she said she would. She looked at all the plans and got me setup in no time. Also while doing my homework, I found that they were on the JD Powers award web site and was the top of the list. I hope I don't sound like I am advertising for Champion, I was impressed with all I found. I hope I find that I made the right choice.)

Horrible electric provider

Craig , Houston - 2014-10-07 09:08:23

Was with TXU and decided to switch to Champion Energy because they claim to have cheaper rates. They lied my electric bill is higher than it has ever been. I have never had a bill so high and the discounts that they claim do not help what so ever. I will be switching back to TXU and dropping Champion Energy do not believe what they tell you.

Customer service not flexible.

Milko Balakchiev, Plano - 2014-09-29 10:29:35

Somehow I missed the emails that notified me about my contract expiring so my rate goes up in August/September to some 12+ cents/kWh. Incidentally, this is the month with highest usage of the year. First, I am glad I missed the renewal notice because the rate they were offering was 6.9. After, two calls and much frustration I was told they can give me $25 credit for renewing my contract or do me a favor and give me the rate that the first agent I talked to quoted me 5.9. I simply wanted to adjust the billing charges that were made when I was out of contract and renew my contract. Response: can't enter two codes at the same time?? I asked to talk to a supervisor, the agent comes back with a message from a supervisor. Have to repeat again. All I wanted was to bill me for my contract rate for the 1.5 months that I was out of contract and renew my contract. Not unreasonable in my opinion. They boast great customer service but can't help me with an honest mistake, in a reasonable way.

Damien, Lewisville, TX - 2014-09-11 17:07:44

I been with Champion for a few months now and I like how easy it is to pay bills and see what my usage is. Great rates which is why I switched in the first place and I have no complaints at all so far. Customer service is always available, courteous and helpful every time I call. No hidden fees. Everything you need to pay is right there in black and white on the bill. No new surprises every month like some companies.

S. Walters, Athens, TX - 2014-09-08 17:17:10

I checked multiple reviews on many companies last year when we moved to this area and finally selected Champion Energy. Now after this first year, I do not hesitate to recommend them! I love the weekly email that a quick glance can tell me what we will likely pay that month and the usage compared to the past week. The bills are simple to understand, and I pay it online through my bank’s billpay system. I also just checked rates again on powertochoose.org to compare my renewal prices with the new customer prices and was surprised to find them the same, as it seems oftentimes companies will hook you with a lower price to get you in and increase it at renewal time. Highly recommend Champion Energy!

Wednesday Reaves, Houston - 2014-08-07 19:24:30

I returned from a trip to a disconnect notice....in the course of trying to resolve the issue I met Allison Bates in Champion's customer service dept. She was positive and very communicative while resolving the issue. It was almost a bit sad when the problem was solved and I returned to just receiving great service and reasonable rates. In Houston Texas you really need to be able to depend on your electric company .....but you should know that this customer CAREs because of your quality customer care

Hidden Fees

Randy Runkle, Crosby, tx - 2014-08-07 07:01:35

Champion Energy has hidden fees. Don't allow them to lure you in with low kilowatt rates. They will charge you approx $65 electricity delivery fee per month(up from $2)from the pole to your house. The fee is a % that will equal 25% of your bill. I have been a customer for about 4 years and this contract is the first to include this delivery scam. I don't and will not do business with companies that mislead and scam their customers. I will be changing providers despite the additional fee Champion will charge me to get out of our contract. As a honest citizen of the USA I will honor this contract that I signed because I made a mistake and now have to pay my way out of it.

Champion Energy Services Responds

2014-08-29 06:33:32

Hi Randy, Sorry to hear that you feel that we have scammed you. That certainly isn't the case. Delivery fees are charges directly from CenterPoint that is passed directly to you without any markup. All retail electric providers do this. Some may include it in their rate or list it as a separate line item on their bill, like we do to show you exactly the charges from CenterPoint vs. Champion. You can read more about these charges here - - https://www.championenergyservices.com/my-account/how-to-read-your-bill/delivery-charges-FAQ.asp. Someone from our team will be reaching out to you to discuss further if you have any questions. The last thing we want is for you to feel mislead.

Overall Good Company

Brad A Schofield, Keller - 2014-07-02 20:54:47

Very good customer service. The only problem we had was online bill pay. Their website sucks when it comes to paying your bill. You can't set up an account to pay from and have to reenter the info over and over again each month. After paying online you can't get a good print out of your confirmation. Other then this we had no other problems and overall they are a good company to do business with. We would consider using them again.

I have been with Champion for years. Last month my bill was $116, this month $189. I called customer service and all I got was rates are higher and so is your usage. I have recommended Champion to many people, sister, brother, and friends. I was shocked that the customer service representative could have cared less. Terrible Never do business with them again

Bryan Sawyer, Houston - 2014-06-17 15:04:04

My company never received their first invoice. When the second invoice arrived with a balance due on it, we paid it the day it arrived. Two days later, a guy from Center Point was in my front lobby announcing to my employees and clients that he was there to cut off our power. When I called Champion, they said that yes, they had received the payments but it was just too late for them to stop the power cut off. Our contract had a $2700 early termination fee built into it so we were stuck for one year. Now we are changing as fast as we can. I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH CHAMPION ENERGY AGAIN!

Criminals

John, Mckinney - 2014-05-31 22:43:28

It is hilarious that all of their responses tout transperancy. They are crooked. They have hidden in their terms that they KNOW no one reads that if you are late on 2 payments, they do not return your deposit. I recommended my parents to Champion and am extremely embarrassed that I did. My parents stayed with them for 2 years and were late on 2 payments. They paid their late fees and Champion is also going to keep their $350 deposit. There is no way a delay in payment for a probable $150 bill justifies a 9,000,000% APR (that's a guess). My parents asked to speak to a manger and got a very rude girl name Shaquanda (something like that) who told them there was a clause in the contract they never signed or even saw. She suggested they download the contract and read it. This is the treatment they give their customers. I hope you are not late on any payments and have to pay late fees and lose your deposit. You can always go to powertochose.org and find the best rates available in your area. Champion is very far down the list right now if you sort by price. Don't settle for a crooked and expensive source of energy. BE SURE AND READ THEIR CONTRACT no matter how long or incomprehensible. This just happens to be one of the gotchas my folks were hit with. If they are this crooked, I'm sure the contract is loaded with gotchas.

Champion Energy Services Responds

2014-07-16 12:22:04

John, Sorry to hear that you did not get your deposit amount back. Unlike several providers who will not return your deposit with 1 late payment, we are lenient in allowing up to 2 late payments because we understand that customers may easily overlook a payment. Also, we don't have any managers with that name so please email us at feedback@championenergyservices.com to look into your account further to ensure that you were given the correct information. Lastly, electricity contracts are long as mandated by the Public Utility Commission of all the information that needs to be disclosed to customers. We always advise customers to review the Electricity Facts Label of the provider they are looking at to see any additional fees that they may see on their bill to avoid surprises.

I'm renewing. SAVE $25 on first bill by using referral ID Jduncan19738

Josh, Houston, TX - 2014-05-12 06:03:32

I've been using Champion for almost a year now and am extremely pleased. The weekly power tracker emails are a great way to stay on top of energy consumption and the few times I've called in to customer service they have been excellent. However, I still decided to do some research with my renewal date coming up. Champion's rates are in the ballpark (not the lowest but not the highest), and, based on my experience, it made it easy to renew. If you plan on switching to champion, use my referral ID--Jduncan19738--when you sign up for 25 dollars off your first bill.

Ed Lasanta, Houston - 2014-04-29 12:10:46

I was with another company(Gexa) for 5 years and this summer they increased the rates so much that I decided to switch companies. I am not looking bad. It has been a great experience so far. Great service and fair pricing. No extra or surprise fees. I recommend Champion energy to anyone looking for a new electricity provider.

Threatened to cut my service when I was 5 days late

Wanda, Coppell - 2014-04-23 19:10:52

I have been a customer for over 4 year - never a late payment. I mistakenly entered the wrong date on bill pay (one month later). The first notice (5 days after the due date) was an email disconnect notice. Wow. I paid the bill immediately and sent an email to that effect with a note that I entered the wrong date. One week later I received a paper cut off notice. I contacted two email customer service addresses (one on the cut off notice and one on their website) to tell them how I was unhappy with how they handled this issue. No one has responded. Really? Pathetic.

We love Champion Energy Services

Sandra Sullivan, Keller, TX - 2014-04-19 11:42:45

We've been with Champion Energy Services for about 6 years and they have been awesome! We were with another provider, and when we switched, we saved about $200 in the first month (we went from 14.3cents/kwh to around 9 cents/kwh, while using 4200kwh's). And, we've saved tons, every month. They have the best customer service (Rated the best by JD Power (2014) for 4 years in a row).

I just signed up with Champion energy. I hope I find that I made the right choice.

James, Crowley - 2014-04-03 10:00:26

I had Green Mountain Energy for four years and every time my contract expires I have to fight them to get a good rate. This time Green Mountain would not give me a good rate, so I went shopping. Out of all the energy companies in Texas Champion Energy is only one that is affordable and has great customer reviews. I signed up online and it was easy. If you sign up online you have to use it close to the end of signing up. I thought you had to use it at the beginning, but I found out it was the end.

greggers, abilene - 2014-02-11 20:04:51

Been with them - what 2 or 3 years now? I dunno - time flies when your energy service is hassle free. Was formerly with sparkenergy, and when they fell out of my service area for whatever reason it was, I don't know, I was sorely anticipating that I wasn't going to do as well again. But then found Champion - whoo hoo! Automatic/recurring billing via Credit Card, set it up and forget it, competitive rates which are promised and delivered, and no weird surprises or weird billing issues (a common complaint across many service providers). I could list all the problems I am NOT having, but it would be too too long! Glad I found you.

Margaret Williams

Margaret Williams, Big Spring, TX - 2014-02-07 08:18:07

I have had Champion for well over a year and was so happy with this company. I had been bragging recently to some friends and said I would gather my bills. Last month and this month seemed little high but I thought it was the colder weather. I went over every bill from the time I switched to Champion and discover in Nov 2013 I began having a delivery charge, on November bill it was $103 but this month it was $170 on top of my normal bill. This was not on any other bill! This makes Champion completely out of the league for competitive rates in this area. Very upset and looking for another provider!

Margaret, Sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your bills. Please know that delivery charges are charges directly from the utility passed to customers without any mark up. You can see how this is calculated here - https://www.championenergyservices.com/my-account/how-to-read-your-bill/delivery-charges-FAQ.asp. Please email us at feedback@championenergyservices.com to take a closer look at your account. You might have renewed from an unbundled product (where delivery charges were part of your energy rate) to our new products where charges from the utlity are completely transparent on your bill.

True to Their Word

Barb, Rockport - 2014-01-31 20:58:19

I switched to Champion because they had a better rate. However after switching, my former provider talked me into coming back which turned out to be a huge mistake as they lied (see review of TXU titled Liars). When I contacted Champion to try and come back they were extremely helpful and true to their word. They conducted a "market track" which I found out from Public Utility Commission cost them money to do but was necessary in order for me to return. Also they credited the early termination fee back to my account which they did not have to do. Each customer rep I spoke with was helpful and pleasant. It is refreshing to find a company that follows through with what they say they will do. If this proves to be how Champion conducts business I will be a loyal customer for a very long time.

Delivery charges

DJ, Dallas - 2014-01-30 15:49:29

I was wondering why even though my usage has remained the same or gone down in some cases, why my bill remains high or is higher, so I compared a bill from April 2013 to my last bill posted in January 2014. Before you say that these are different times of year and not comparible, let me show you something: April 2013: My usage x rate was 553 x 0.079 = 43.69 for usage x rate. January 2014: My usage x rate was 663 x 0.063 = 41.77 for usage x rate. To compare I looked at my last bill in January and there was a delivery charge of 21.42 and in April of last year there was no delivery charge. The only charges in April 2013 were a 2.19 customer charge, 1.23 energy efficiency cost, and less than $3 in taxes. This last bill in January included 5.25 in customer charges, 21.42 in delivery charges, 1.23 in energy efficiency cost, and a base charge of 6.95. Oh, and the $3 in taxes. My usage amount was lower in this last bill and my bill was higher!!! I'm sure Champion has some story or PR spin of passing along the charges to me, but how can we, as customers, be expected to take this on? These added charges are more than half of what I pay in usage!!!!! If I had the same rate as in April 2013 and charges and calculate by the usage in this last bill my bill would have been 58.80. That is over $20 more with these new fees!!!! The math does not lie. I will be looking for another provider and buyers BEWARE of Champion!!

I am extremely pleased with all aspects of Champion Energy. They send you weekly power tracker emails that help you understand your electricity usage each day and they sent a number of helpful emails during the extreme cold weather. I got a great rate (very competitive) and my bill is easy to understand. I'm saving a decent amount versus are previous electricity providers. Another bonus is that they have a referral program where you get a 25 dollar bill credit if someone uses your referral id when signing up. They wouldn't be the JD Power rated Top electricity provider 4 years in a row if they weren't doing a lot of things right!

The current contract with Champion will be expired by the end of this month

Sissy, Sugar Land, TX - 2014-01-18 14:19:08

My current contract will be expired by the end of this month, it's strange that they haven't sent me the renew letter until today. I chat with one of their Rep. online a week ago inquire renewing my contract. However, I can accept $6.95 base charge, which before is $4.95. I can accept you will be charged for the base charge $6.95 if your usage is under 800kWh, which before is 500kWh. I can accept that del charge 3.5724¢ Per kWh, because right now it seems champion seperate it from the energy charge, at least that's the way I looked. For example, for a 12month contact, current their energy charge is 7¢ Per kWh, you gonna pay the del charge no matter what, so plus the del charge, you are going to pay 10.5724 ¢ Per kWh. It's higher than the rate I got last year, which is 9.8¢ Per kWh, but I would accept that, because so far I have no issue with Champion, and their customer service is pertty good. But I can't accept their $9.45 monthly customer charge. Althought it says it will including the customer charge(currently I was charged $3.05,when I was with TXU before, they don't have customer charge, but they have advanced meter charge for $3.05), energy efficiency cost recovery factor(this is a flat charge-$0.93) and meter charge(I don't have this charge on my current bill, I assumed this was billed as "customer charge",because the amount is the same). If the new contract will start to charge meter charge, then what is the customer charge for? My current bill besides the energy charge, base charge, the rest is "change to centerpoint tariff"(which only about 0.119¢ Per kWh),plus TDU Pass-Through Charges, including customer charge ($3.05),Delivery charges( about 0.117¢ Per kWh) and Energy Effciency Cost Recovery Factor (flat $0.93, it may be changed, but that's a flat rate). I guess I will get taxes charge no matter what under the new contract. So pretty much, besides the rate is going to be a little higher (which i can accept that), I will get charged $4.95 extra base on 500 kWh. If your usageage is over 2000 kWh, then you can make it even.(which I can't accept that, they looks like give us a flat rate, but that base on a very high usage). For fact check, my average price is around 11.985¢ Per kWh base on 500kWh, my average price was around 10.377¢ Per kWh base on 1000kWh. But according to Champion's current Facts Label, it will be 13.9¢ Per kWh base on 500kWh. 11.5¢ Per kWh base on 1000kWh. It will be about $250 extra I am going to pay with the new Champion rate for the same usage I used the past year. So if you are using over 1000kWh all year round, the new rate should still be ok, otherwise you will need to think about it.

New Charges

Teresa, Colleyville - 2014-01-11 19:17:50

As with several other customers of Champion, I was really happy when I made the change to Champion. Now I am regretting it. These additional charges from Oncor are boosting my monthly bill around $50.00 a month. Look at your bills, PLEASE. It does not say Oncor it says TDU Pass-Through charges. You may be riding on an old contract that does not have these charges so buyer beware when you renew. In the past Champion did not have these charges, I scan and keep all of my bills so when looking back on the older bills these charges were not there. This totally defeats getting a really good KWH rate. I will be looking to cancel my contract with Champion and moving onto another provider. Note to Champion.....some times it is just better to raise YOUR rate to absorb these Oncor charges rather than placing an additional charge on our monthly bill. So disappointed and I have been a long time customer. Many friends are cancelling over this also.

With the new contracts everything is completely transparent. We want everyone to look at their bill, whether it is with us or their other provider. At Champion we have nothing to hide. Falon Mitchell, Dallas - 2014-01-06 15:15:39

I hold a 800 sq ft apartment in Dallas, which I travel too for business each month and needed AFFORDABLE ENERGY, as I was paying $80+ each month and it was ridiculous! I switched over to Champion in August and my apartment energy NOW runs $25 to $35 a month. I had NO IDEA until now, but 99% of energy providers build in "hidden fees" for things like: reading your meter, preparing your statement, monthly-meter cost, etc. I dropped a few cents on the KwH on my new plan, but where I am really saving is NOT having to pay those hidden fees! Plus, their quality of service is AWESOME and the transition from my previous provider to Champion was a BREEZE; all I had to do was give them my meter number, which I had on my previous statement, and we were good to go!

jgaray52228 use code to get 25$$ off your bill!!!!!!

Jose, Houston - 2013-12-16 23:18:27

Recently I called champion energy because I had a feeling my meter was giving an incorrect number and my bill came really high!!! I was surprised and very angry (like anyone would be) so I spoke to James, he was so helpful and very knowledgeable. He said that he would file a report and he would contact Ceneterpoint, well they came to read my meter and it did give them a different reading in return my bill was was almost FREE ($6.60)! Champion energy had a representative call me back to give me the good news! I was so happy that they discounted that amount and then gave me 25 dollars as an apology. I really felt like a valued customer. They are awesome!!!!

Good Company, but Rates and Pricing Not So Much

Darrell, Dallas - 2013-12-12 09:42:33

We've been with Champion Energy for just over a year now. They have great customer service, I think every REP should provide online live chat functionality. When we went to renew the price was hirer than most Texas REP's, and I think they will be busted bigtime for using BillMatrix to process online card transactions as BillMatrix charges $3.95 for using your card which is a violation of Texas law. I reported this violation multiple times to the CSR's but Champion shows no interest in forcing its provider to comply with the law. Though it couldn't be that hard for Champion to operate its own billing system.

Champion Experience

Wade Stringer, Houston - 2013-11-17 06:00:23

EXCELLENT!!!!!!! After a lot of research, spreadsheet calculations, consumer reviews I chose Champion because this company provides wonderful customer service at a very fair and low cost. I know I sound like a commercial , nevertheless, they were ranked HIGHEST in Residential Customer Satisfaction with Retail Electrical Provider in Texas 4 YEARS in a row!!!! http://www.jdpower.com/content/press-release/kVNNnIQ/2013-texas-residential-retail-electric-provider-customer-satisfaction-study.htm . And are ranked high on the Power to Choose website http://powertochoose.org/scorecard/Scorecard.pdf The only costs (besides the base charge and per KwH rate itself) included in almost all REP’s bills are: Sales Tax (1% City) & Texas State Gross Receipts Tax on REP income & Texas PUC Assessment, these are the same for every REP. The primary difficulty in making “apples to apples” comparisons is that the companies don’t use the same rate structure. However, excluding the three “adders” I listed above, which are the same for almost all REP’s, the rate can be broken down one or more of the following 5 components: 1. Energy Base Charge, if any, for bills of less than a certain KwH level. This is the fixed charge for being a customer of the REP and is charged ONLY when your usage falls below the defined level, which is most often 1,000 KwH for the month. 2. Energy Base Charge, if any, for bills at or over a certain KwH level. This is the fixed charge for being a customer of the REP and is charged ONLY when your usage falls at or above the defined level, which is most often 1,000 KwH for the month. 3. Energy Usage Charge. This is the charge for each KwH during the month that goes to the REP. 4. TDSP (i.e., CenterPoint for us) Base Charge. This is the fixed charge for being served by the TDSP. 5. TDSP Usage Charge. This is the charge for each KwH during the month that goes to the TDSP. Keep in mind that some REP’s bundle one or more of these components together and so you just use 0 for those charges when computing your bill. A lot of companies tend to have hidden fees. Champion is completely transparent. Champion’s website is easy to use; the weekly email usage reports that show daily kilowatt usage / daily temp. in a graph keeps me current on my to usage. Setting up my service was easy and straightforward online at http://www.championenergyservices.com/. Finally, I like how you can recommend friends and BOTH of you get a $25 referral credit if they use your referral ID. Overall, Champion is a quality company and I highly recommend them. Please use my code only if you like what I had to say. Thank you for your supporting a local Houston Teacher.

Duncan, Houston - 2013-11-06 07:17:40

My girlfriend and I are thrilled with Champion energy and our experience has been excellent. They wouldn't be the JD Power rated Top electricity provider 4 years in a row if they weren't doing a lot of things right. They will send you weekly power tracker emails that help you understand your electricity usage each day and the customer service agents are friendly and helpful. We also got a great rate (very competitive) and our bill is easy to understand. We're saving a decent amount versus are previous electricity providers. Another bonus is that they have a referral program where you get a 25 dollar bill credit if someone uses your referral id when signing up. Thanks!

Mrs. Garay, Houston - 2013-10-22 21:39:28

We had been looking for an electric company for about as long as we where dreaming of an apartment....we where recommended by a family member who has had champion energy for two years but we still did our own research, they're prices are so competitive when we finally decided on this provider out of all ten it was a week before our move in and it was 12a.m at first I got a very rude impatient lady....and I was not happy so I called the next day and spoke to a guy who knew about customer service he answered all my questions and joked around with me.....we are about to receive our first electric bill ever and I hope the deal is as good as the guy made it sound! I'm happy our process went smooth and quick less than 20min to sign up. on our move in day we had electricity! If my family recommends then I will too! I will update when I get my bill :)

Hidden "Deliver" charge after 2 years-BEWARE of renewing!!

Frances, McAllen - 2013-10-10 08:39:47

I recently renewed my service because I absolutely loved the service and were the most competitive energy company out there. I renewed my service as I never intended to go anywhere else. Then recently I looked at my previous two bills wondering why my bill was so much higher. Then I see these "Delivery" charges on my account that are almost equal to my entire bill itself. I CANNOT believe this, and after I called and spoke to a representative, they said that the new contracts now have a delivery charge and the old contracts are no longer being used and if I wanted to change that I would have to pay a 150.00 charge. I referred this company to everyone and now I am warning everyone. I am extremely disappointed at how they take advantage of their faithful customers.

Slapped with Delivery Charge

Shabbir Manzoor, Plano, TX - 2013-10-08 10:31:44

I have had Champion Energy for over two years with no issues whatsoever. Even recommended them to friends. However after renewing for the third time I see my bill go up by more than 30%. This increase in bill was attributed to Delivery charges. I called the customer support to inquire about this charge and was told that it was always in my bill but now it shows up a a new line item. What I fail to understand is my usage for the same month previous years were significantly less. I will continue to watch for my next month bill and if things don't improve.....I'll look into other options.

Wade, Thanks for the feedback. You're right when it comes to comparing "apples to apples" when evaluating electricity plans from various providers. The best way to get a clear picture of what you will be paying is evaluating the company's Electricity Facts Label - - base charges based on usage, monthly fees, billing preferences, customer services fees, etc. Based on that information customers can make an educated decision and we hope that they choose Champion Energy for our transparency to our customers with exceptional customer care.

Champion has changed. Buyer beware

Steven Vaughn, Dallas, Texas - 2013-10-01 17:53:57

10-1-2013 - signing a contract with Champion or any Electric provider appears to mean they can sucker you in for a lower rate only to charge you more with all the hidden fees! Even though i thought I was signing up for a cheaper rate when I renewed my bill now has $50 to $100 extra tacked on with a so called "Delivery Charge". When I called I got the , Oh we are so sorry u did not understand all the legal jumbo that no one can understand as I heard snickering in the back ground. Ha ha ha , we can charge u anything and say it is a fee and there is no way u can prove we charge you too much. We can just say it is a State fee of some kind. Everyone gets it, right? I get so disgusted with this and it just keeps going on. Its been years no and no one can depend on any electrical provider anymore.

Steven, Sorry to hear that you feel that we have mislead you when you enrolled with us. By no means would we add any charges to your account that you didn't already know about. Delivery charges are applied to all customers, regardless who your provider is. Oncor passes these charges directly to retailers who pass it directly to you, the customer. By law, these charges cannot be marked up. Give us the chance to explain this in more detail to you by emailing feedback@championenergyservices.com with your account information. We want to make sure you and all our customers are educated about the charges on your bills.

Attacked my credit rating

Frank Carter, Chicago - 2013-09-22 08:14:09

So I always pay my bills on time. Perfect credit record until Champion comes along. They say they sent me my final bill when I moved but I did not get it. They just referred my account to collections and I got a letter from the collection agency at my new address. Nasty way of doing business, not even a second letter (maybe not even a first as I never saw it). Just immediately attack a person's credit rating. Not worth the slight savings of doing business with a company like this to risk your credit rating.

Deceptive Marketing

Marlene O'Keefe, Lewisville - 2013-09-07 11:50:43

I have been a Champion customer and was very happy with them. I got my renewal notice in an email, which promoted 7.2 cents for the Silver Senior Plan; however, when I got my first bill, the price per kwh was over 11 cents. They told me it was because they separated the delivery charges from their charge. Whatever the reason, I feel it was deceptive to market one price without the delivery charges and then send a bill which actually included delivery charges that jumped from $1.33 to over $27 the first month. This month my delivery charges went over $45! It should have been spelled out what was about to happen to my bills and at least provided an example of what the total bill would look like. As soon as I can find a different provider, I will cancel and pay the penalty to Champion. It will be cheaper than being locked into this contract for the next 20 months.

Marlene, A customer care supervisor will be reaching out to you shortly to review your contract with you. The renewal notice you received showed both your energy rate and the average price per kWh you would be paying with your renewal. We always advise customers to review the average price when comparing us to other providers as this is the "true" number to evaluate. This is calculated by adding up your current charges [charges from Champion (Energy Charge) + Oncor Charges (Delivery Charges and Monthly Customer Charge(energy efficiency cost recovery factor and advanced metering fees)] divided by your monthly usage for the month. By plugging in the numbers your average rate is similar to what you have been paying every month with us. The delivery charges only appear higher because we are no longer including it in your energy rate which we had done on your contract previously.

Josh, The unbundling of our products was in favor of our customers to provide transparency of what Champion charges versus the utility, Oncor. It is the same as it was prior to you renewing your contract. It is just displayed differently now. Delivery charges are charges from Oncor and passed directly to customers. We do not alter this pricing. We'd be happy to take a look at your contract in detail. Email us at feedback@championenergyservices.com

Don't believe Champion's balanced billing

SC, Manvel - 2013-08-21 20:24:40

I switched from Gexa after two years with them. I was looking for a better price (most of these companies seem to be more interested in getting new customers than keeping existing ones) and because of good reviews. I had used balanced billing under Gexa and, while they did adjust on occasion, the billing was consistent. When I talked the Champion customer service as i was making the switch, I couldn't have made it more clear that my goal was to have the same charge every month. I like to schedule all my bills using my bank's computer pay system. When I received the first bill, it was significantly higher than I'd been quoted. I knew the estimate did not include Centerpoint delivery charges but the bill was still higher than expected. When I called, I was told that Champion's idea of "balanced billing" was charging me the same amount for THEIR portion of the bill but the Centerpoint delivery charges would vary every month by usage. I don't see how they can call that balanced billing. For the two years with Gexa, they based both the usage and delivery charges on the average monthly usage. Every month my bill showed an "accumulate variance", either positive or negative depending on the time of year. It allowed me to schedule the same amount every month to be paid automatically by the due date. If I'd understood their program, I'd have stayed with Gexa, even with slightly higher rates.

Delivery Charges Substantially Higher

Not happy with the $150 delivery charge on this months bill. I renewed my contract last month and locked in at a lower rate. Your delivery charges were not raised. Your current bill may look slightly different than your previous bill as the structure of our products changed. Delivery charges are passed through directly from the utility. Regardless of who your provider is, all providers pass these charges directly to customers without mark up. Previously some of these charges appeared on 2 places on your bill - bundled in your energy charge and as a separate line item. We made it more transparent to customers by listing it directly on the bill. If you have additional questions, please call us at 877.653.5090 or email us at feedback@championenergyservices.com.

David, Your delivery charges were not raised. Your current bill may look slightly different than your previous bill as the structure of our products changed. Delivery charges are passed through directly from the utility. Previously some of these charges were bundled in your energy charge. We made it more transparent to customers by listing it directly on the bill.

Charge customers with extraordinarily high rates when fixed term expires

John, McAllen - 2013-08-13 19:55:12

This company charges extraordinarily high rates after fixed-rate term expires. The customer service is fine when you are their customer, but when you cannot buy their electricity anymore, they become rude and cannot care less about your questions on your bills.

R Moore, Dallas - 2013-08-08 07:45:18

We were with First Choice Power for 7 years. They started out great but then were bought out or merged with another company (from what we heard) and their customer service became awful. We are changing to Champion because of their awards for customer service for the last 3 years. So far so good. Making the switch was easy. The service representative was nice and also helpful. There were slightly cheaper electric plans with other companies, but the reviews for those companies were not as consistent as Champion's. We will see if giving up about .5 cents/KW is worth Champion's claims of being the best choice. We will update as we go along.

Absolutely ridiculous

Mark N, Houston - 2013-08-05 17:37:42

You have raised the customer delivery charge from an average of $1.30 to over $29.09 in 1 month....I renewed my contract last month and the new bill is delivered today, that is crap...I used less kwh this billing cycle and I am paying $13 higher for less power consumption for the month. If you had told me last month I would be paying more than $28 higher delivery charges per month, I would not have renewed with you. As it stands now, I will be canceling you as my provider, for the simple reason it will be cheaper to cancel and pay the penalty than give you more money per month for delivery charges. Believe me I will send a request to a news station here locally to ask you all about this so you will have informed customers here in Houston and surrounding areas....

Fallen from grace

No longer a customer, Houston - 2013-08-01 13:19:52

I've been with Champion Energy since 2009 and have always been VERY happy with my rates. I have always bragged about Champion and referred them to anyone who asked who I used. But sadly, they have driven their prices up and I will no longer remain a customer. I understand all electric companies have seen increases but even with that, Champion has gone from one of the cheapest to one of the must expensive and the no longer bundled TDU rates don't help. Their website has a lot of great features and is easy to use, the bills are easy to pay and keep track off and as of late they have been emailing me weekly usage rates so I know to expect what my bill for the month will be...if you are willing to pay much more for these things than it would still be worth it. But I have faith that my new provider can provide me a quality website and bill payment and I will be paying significantly less for it. I would return to Champion in a heartbeat if they decided to become the people's Champion again one day and return to being a low cost provider.

What in the world happened?

DC, Dallas - 2013-07-28 14:06:19

We've been hit with huge delivery charges after a renewal. Was very happy with Champion until this point. Suddenly, we're paying over $60 for a delivery fee? The "note" explaining these Delivery Charges does not match up with the cost of the fee. According the per Kwh charge, should be about $5. But it is over $60. We were expecting great rates, but this exploded the rate to almost double the cost. That's very deceptive. Champion says "no hidden fees" on their website. When we renewed we never expected to see this. See where someone else posted about same problem. Wonder if this is 1) legal, 2) normal cost with other services. 3) ethical

Delivery Charges surpass price of electricity

Kyle, Houston, Texas - 2013-07-15 22:42:10

I just finished my first year with Champion and was pleased with the rate and customer service. However, after renewal my rates have sharply risen. The first year I signed at an average rate of 9.7 cents per/kwh and after delivery charges the avg. rate would hover between 10 and 12 cents. I renewed at a base charge of 6.7 cents/kwh and now my avg price paid after deliver charges hit 16.7 cents/kwh. This months bill i used $30 dollars worth of electricity and paid 34 dollars in delivery fees. Delivery charges on pervious bills were .35 cents TOTAL. Now 15.00

Used to be competitive, now they are middle of the road.

Christopher Harris, Dallas - 2013-07-12 08:14:32

My wife and I have been with Champion Energy for years, and have always been pretty happy with their service. In the past, before renewing, we'd check the rates on PTC just to see where their renewal offering was relative to their competition and they were always fairly competitive. Not always the cheapest, but they always had a plan that was competitive that we could feel good about choosing. This last renewal period, however, it seems that you have to scroll WAAAY down the PTC list to find the first Champion plan. Electricity is a commodity and I can't justify paying 12% more for my electricity for no good reason when there are 46 other plans (I just checked) that I can choose from that are less expensive. We called their service department and asked them if they could do anything with their renewal rate (given what other options are out there) are were told that they couldn't. It's more expensive to find a new customer than it is to keep an existing customer, but it seems like nobody has told that to Champion. I will be switching to Gexa (8.54 cents vs Champions 9.50 cents) in a few days when my contract is up. I personally think they are experimenting with how many existing customers will stay when they raise their price by a penny. As a side note, and this seems to apply to all of the providers out there, it seems a bit shady to get charged for using too little electricity and also for using too much electricity. Last month, we went over 2,000 kWh for the first time ever and got hit with a $60+ charge...we called Champion and were told that was a charge from Oncor. I don't ever remember reading anywhere that there was a penalty for using too much electricity in any plan we signed up under. But it seems that "gotcha billing" is the new norm in the Texas deregulated energy market. I can't wait to be a part of the class action lawsuit that will inevitably arise from this unscrupulous practice.

Andy, Mansfield - 2013-06-27 13:37:29

I switched to Champoin two years ago based on relatively low costs, good reviews and JD Powers ratings. Have had a good experieince with them but based on what I believe are uncompetitive rates, I am looking hard at switching. With some companies offering 12 month rates at $.085/kw and Champion not able to offer me anything better than $.097/kw, why would I stay? As a 1780 kw/month customer, one would think you'd be a more flexible/competitive for my business.

Kenisha, euless, tx - 2013-06-26 20:43:38

I have been with champion for 4 years. They have good customer service and had great plans. But because they have gotten bigger overthe past few years, they no longer care about giving good rate plans. Their rates are no longer any better than reliant or txu. That is not how you keep good customers. I had rates in the 8's the whole 4 years but now the best they can do is 9.6. Really? I am very disappointed with how things are going and will try a different provider. Hopefully I will be one of the few and pick a decent provider.

Kim , Fort Worth - 2013-06-24 11:28:52

Although we have been pleased with the service we have received with Champion Energy Services the past two years, it is unlikely that we will renew our contract that expires soon due to the higher rates and fees. There is now a $6.95 penalty for using less than 800 kwh hours. (In the past the penalty was for less than 500 kwh which was reasonable for our family and we rarely had to pay.) We try to conserve energy as well as water. Now it appears that if we try to be responsible, we will be penalized nearly every month.

I have been with Champion 2 years and have had absolutely no problems. However, their rates are higher than I can get elsewhere. I live in a small house had sometimes go under 1000 kw/hr in a month - they don't charge a service fee unless you go under 800 kw/hr which is nice for those that are frugal with our natural resources. They are a good company - just wish I could still afford them.

I've been with Champion for 2 yrs and it's time to renew again. Unfortunately the emails they are sending are so confusing. I KNOW the rates have gone up and I KNOW the amount you have to pay if you use less than 800 kilowatts has gone up. What I can't figure out is how much. June 2013 Review: My service is still very reliable, and my rate is locked in at a very low rate. I still have no limits on referral codes, so please keep using my code if you like my review. The decision to switch from Reliant Energy has saved me hundreds of dollars, and I've remained very impressed with my service with Champion Energy! February 2013 Review: Reporting back with my 5 month review, and I have absolutely no complaints. My friends and coworkers have been using my referral code to sign up, and I haven't had an electric bill due to account credits! I really appreciate all of those whom have used my referral code - thank you! I hope that my feedback has been helpful. There have been no interruptions of my service, and the customer service representatives have even followed-up with me to make sure I am pleased with my service. December 2012 Review: Hello, I'm reporting back several months in, and I have had no problems or complaints. Wonderful customer service and no disruptions with my service. I still have my great, low rate, and I have received a couple referral credits, which means I receive $50 off of my bill. My last bill was just under $7. With this wonderful rate, and unlimited referral credits to bill, I will definitely maintain my service with Champion Energy. If I have any problems within the next month or two I will report back again. October Review: I started business with Champion Energy a couple weeks ago. My first bill was prorated for 3.5 weeks and was $37 which is amazing! I work at Baylor College of Medicine and receive a special rate, so I would suggest checking to see if you also receive company discounts. Another benefit, in addition to my first remarkably low bill, was that the transition of my service was flawless. The customer service representative was very friendly and prompt in helping me understand the process of switching energy companies, and what to expect. I also have the lowest rate I've ever had for electric services. Also, as a customer you have the opportunity to have unlimited referrals and thus unlimited discounts. This means that if you sign up using my referral code, I receive a $50 bill credit, and as a new customer you receive a $25 bill credit. If you refer someone you receive a $50 bill credit, and so on. These credits are unlimited, which to me is unheard of. Thus far, this is a great company with great customer service; the representatives are very accessible and prompt in their service, and there are a great number of opportunities to lower your bills. If you like my review please use my referral code. I will report back again on Champion Energy services every few months to update my review.

Disappointed in renewal offers

Mr. H, Harlingen - 2013-06-10 14:25:18

I switched to Champion Energy two years ago because my previous electricity provider was hiking prices up too high. I signed up for a 12-month fixed-rate contract with Champion Energy. My first year with Champion was great and I did save compared to my previous provider. Then when my contract was up my renewal offer from Champion Energy was even LESS than the previous year! I was very happy to sign up for my second 12-month fixed-rate contract. My second contract expires this month and I have to say I'm VERY DISAPPOINTED in the renewal "offers" coming in from Champion Energy. They are WAY TOO HIGH....so high in fact that I'm DROPPING Champion Energy and switching to a more reasonably priced provider. I hate to leave but they aren't even in the ballpark on their pricing this year.

Pleased until new base fee & usage minimum

Marilyn Zaruba, Frisco, Texas - 2013-06-07 11:24:11

We are seniors who were taught to conserve natural resources as children and, consequently, are very careful with our electicity usage. Since we rarely go over 500 kWh per month, we had to pay the $4.95 base charge at least 9 months of the year and now they have raised both the minimum usage and the base charge. Really. People who conserve are punished? That just does not make sense whatsoever. In a logical world, people should be charged more for wasting it. Fortunately, I have found a company that charges everyone the same amount per kWh and NO base charge. I can live with that. Since my account is drafted each month, it is not as if I cost them any more than anyone else.

Stay away from their "balanced billing" plan

Bret, Tomball - 2013-05-17 14:55:42

Overall, I would say I'm satisfied with the rates and the friendliness of their customer service. However, I got really hosed by their "balance billing" program. Most balanced billing programs adjust the monthly average as you go in a 6 month cycle (based on actual to-date usage) to make sure that at the end of the balanced billing cycle you are not left with a huge true up amount. It's of course based on the last year average but if anything significant has changed (in my case, a new pool), that can really throw things off. Bottom line is I ended up owing $1,000 at the end of my balanced billing 6 month cycle because of it. In fairness, Champion was willing to work with me so I could pay that over a period of 3 months and I even signed a contract stating those terms. However, I continued to get disconnection notices by mail and email. The agent - who was apologetic about the situation and very professional by the way - promised my service would not be disconnected. However, it's unnerving when you continue to get disconnect notices. Well, when I finally got the pink disconnect notice stating my power would be off in 1 week, well, I just went ahead and paid in full. The good: Competitive rates, friendly customer service. The bad: Balanced Billing does not adjust monthly based on actual usage to-date to ensure you are not stuck with a huge true up bill. Contract to pay true up amount over 3 months did not prevent disconnection notices from coming my way. Would recommend Champion Energy Services for their competitive rates and friendly customer service but RUN - DON'T WALK AWAY FROM "BALANCED BILLING" PLAN! :)

We apologize for your unfavorable experience with balanced billing. We hope that giving you an extended time frame to pay the additional charges was helpful. You shouldn’t have received disconnect notices in this time period. That was our mistake. Many customers take advantage of our budget billing program knowing that we will bill or credit their account for any overbilling or underbilling against their actual usage. Currently this process is once every twelve months. We are currently exploring shorter time frames for this service.

Terrible web site, but pretty good company

Bill McReynolds, North Richland Hillls, TX - 2013-05-16 14:31:58

I have several times tried to use their automatic credit card billing, but have had all kinds of problems. Their customer service people are polite and helpful, but they just don't seem to have the bugs worked out. The web site allows you to log on and check your bills, but almost anyting that you do kicks you out to start all over. I just tried to renew my service contract while logged on to my account. I was taken to a new page asking for my zip code and account number. I had the same experience trying to change payment details. It is like they don't think this whole internet thing is really a good idea, or expect anyone to actually use their web site.

I've been a Champion customer since December of 2012. I'm highly impressed with Champion's customer service. They are very responsive. Account management & bill pay through their website is easy, too. Their billing is straight forward, so there is no surprises. All I can say is that while Champion may not be the cheapest provider out there, they seem to be a reliable and trustworthy operation.

Previously, I had talked with another customer service agent just to ask questions regarding Champion Energy, and she was extremely helpful and courteous, as well. If all the employees at this company are this helpful and polite, I'm very happy that I switched the Champion Energy.

I've been with Champion for about 4 1/2 years, now, and I have never experienced a problem. I was with Reliant before, and my first month (August 2008) with Champion, I saved almost $200 over Reliant's rate, and I have been saving ever since! Champion has a referral program, where they will give you $25 off of your first bill, if you enter a referral ID, when you sign up. I highly recommend Champion, to enjoy savings month after month and year after year.

Wes, Irving, TX - 2013-01-24 15:05:21

After living for a year in Irving, TX, my wife and I realized we needed to switch electric providers due to such high pricing. I shopped around and Champion looked to be our best new option. After receiving our first bill, we compared it to one from our old provider and found that even though we used 450 kWh with Champion compared to a bill from our old provider at 300 kWh, we had saved money! The rates are great with Champion and I cant wait to see how the rest of year will put more money into our pockets. Their service is quick and friendly too so thats a plus.

December Review: Hello, I'm reporting back several months in, and I have had no problems or complaints. Not only was my first bill remarkably low, but the transition of my service was flawless.

If you use under 1000 kWh Sign up with code JParker65277 for $25 off of a bill.

Vivian, Harlingen, TX - 2013-01-09 20:28:11

I had to switch from the best company out there because they don't appreciate my efforts to conserve energy and now they (Spark Energy) will charge $8.99 if I go under 1000 kWh. Getting set up with Champion's online bill payment wasn't smooth like at Spark, but I think I did it. Clicked on several "set up recurring payment" links before I got one that actually did that. The first links took me to pay bill, which you can't do on first bill because it will incur a charge of like $4. My account still says I'm on one time payments, so we will see if I successfully enrolled. From reading other reviews, I know that I'd better be on top of it and be sure it all happened or I might get a disconnect notice. But Champion doesn't charge for under 1000. They do charge for under 500, but it is only about $5. So it is the company for the 'small fry'. They do have very patient customer service reps also, so if you stay on top of bill and call them, I'm sure everything should go fine. I think the bad reviews are from people who didn't read all the fine print. But at least if there is a problem, you can call in and talk to someone who can fix things. Call in a second time if you don't like the answer, because I did get several different answers from Customer service.

Vivian - we used to charge $4.95 for usage under 500 kilowatts. Contracts going forward will incur a $6.95 fee for usage under 800 kilowatts. This charge is still lower than many other providers out there. Beware! Your Credit Rating will be impacted if you miss just one payment

Tesh, Houston - 2013-01-04 09:39:20

Overall, I was happy with Champion Energy Services until I inadvertently missed making a payment for one billing cycle. Our Champion Energy Services account was under my wife's name. I was always paying my bills on time and I had never missed a payment. One time, I made a mistake while setting up a payment using my Bank of America Bill Payment Service. I actually paid the wrong company while my intention was to pay Champion Energy Services. That was my mistake. What was shocking for me was that the one time I missed making the payment was reported to credit rating agencies. My wife's credit rating (the name on the account) was lowered because Champion Energy Services had reported the one time late payment. My wife asked me what happened. Initially, I responded by saying that the bill was paid on time. It took me a while to figure out that I have made a mistake. This is a serious issue. You may not be aware of that your credit rating has been ruined. In my opinion, Champion Energy Services should have made some effort to contact us before reporting us a delinquent. They should have also looked at our history of payments and take into account all this before reporting to credit reporting agencies. One mishap; your credit rating ruined! Since this very serious issue, I had to rate them very low.

Tesh - If you could email us at feedback@championenergyservices.com with your account number we can look at this further. We wouldn't report you to a credit rating agency for one missed payment. And we are pretty thorough in communicating with our customers via email or phone prior to the extreme measure of reporting to an outside agency. Good rate, but poor business practices

S Christensen, Cypress - 2012-11-29 07:22:45

I switched to Champion in late September 2012. I received my first invoice in seven days. I pay all my bills on-line or by automatic payment. I signed up for their Recurring Credit Card payment plan. I received an email on October 10, 2012 indicating that I had successfully enrolled in the Recurring Credit Card Payment Plan, but that I needed to pay the first invoice in another manner because the credit card payment would not be effective until the next invoice. So I paid using my bank's bill pay process. On November 26th I received a "Friendly Reminder" that my second invoice had not been paid. Since I had received the October 10th email I assumed it would have been paid already. I called and was told they had no record of me signing up for recurring credit card payment. To top it off I received a disconnect notice two days after the friendly reminder! Who did JD Power query to award this company with anything?

Offers products they cannot support

Tim, Dallas - 2012-10-17 12:52:02

I signed up for a Time of Use program with Champion a year ago (I recently switched away upon completion of my contract at the end of August), and it was a complete fiasco. It took over 3 full billing cycles to receive my first invoice (in three days I got 3 bills for 3 months of usage, all due on the same day, in violation of the PUCT residential billing rules). After that, I had about 6 months where the bills were coming in seemingly correct and on-time, but it all fell apart for the last three months. I had several bills issued, each was withdrawn, and I was unable to make a payment on their online portal until a balance due was posted. Customer service was clueless, they simply said that I didn't owe anything so what's the problem (never mind I had several months of billing piling up). I finally had to resort to filing a PUCT complaint just to get my bill. The conclusion from Champion via the PUCT was that their 3rd party billing provider was 'unable to support' the Time of Use product they offered me. So, at the end of the day, not only did they deliver a poor experience to me, they also clearly violated PUCT rules and the Terms and Conditions on my contract. Sorry guys, I gave you 4 years of my business, and that is going to be that.

Ricky, Pearland - 2012-09-17 15:08:52

In a deregulated environment the only difference between the services is the website interface and customer service. Champion really falls short on the web interface for the management of your account. The billing and web environments are not actually linked and I constantly get billing notifications through email which I cannot find within the web environment. Automatic payments are limited and has to be configured only at the time before a bill is paid and not at anytime. Even the links within the PDF bill don't properly redirect to the correct webpage for automated billing. I can't wait for my year to be up so I can move to a company that has a web interface from at least this decade. I do have to admit that customer service is prompt, courteous and helpful.

I have been a customer since May of this year and have been incredibly pleased with their service thus far. My main reason for choosing Champion was because they offered a lower monthly fee for not meeting the minimum usage and their minimum usage amount was less than other companies. NO SWITCH MADE

Laurie Oglesby, Spring - 2012-09-11 07:33:28

I emailed Cindy at Champion Energy, sent her my two most recent bills as she asked, but she never made the switch from our old provider to Champion. We didn't find out until we got the bill from our old provider charging us the month to month high rate that a contract hadn't been switched. I contacted Champion and was told that an error had been made....Cindy wasn't around...someone dropped the ball. I told Champion that if they'd make it right & refund the money we were out, that we would go ahead and make the switch to Champion. They only offered to refund $50 of the $345 we were out, so we decided to continue using our former provider. Don't trust that your account will be switched by Champion!

Billing Department Totally Incompetent

Anonymous, Plano, TX - 2012-09-04 08:11:18

I (or the bank) had a bill pay snafu which I'll admit to. The first time I had been late in the 18 months I had been with them. They sent me a late notice. Having to actually deal with Champion to resolve this situation has been painful. The customer service people (some are *VERY* unfriendly though others are nice) tell me inconsistent stories until I press them to research more. Then I get the real story. I eventually resolved though I've had to pay extra to use a third party payment system. But then the next day after I paid (aka the same day I got the original late notice), I got a termination notice. Required more calls to get someone to tell me I wouldn't be terminated. If I had been on vacation when this happened, I would have come home to find rotting food in my house. Their online payment system makes it look like everything look good even when it is not. My renewal is coming up and I am willing to pay more to get anyway from this horrible company. They are definitely yet another case providing that JD Power is worthless, which I already knew.

Please email us at feedback@championenergyservices.com so we can look into the details of your complaint. When a payment is missed, we sent a friendly reminder email notice 3 days after the bill due date. After a bill is 7 days late, we send a disconnection notice, and the customer has 10 days to pay their bill. So we allow 20 days after the bill due date before service is actually disconnected.

Deceptive Company Practices

Claire , Temple - 2012-08-16 19:47:16

I recently moved from Florida to Texas and I have been shopping around for an electric company. I read over the reviews for most of the companies listed to provide energy to the Bell County area and since I have spent quite a bit of time on this I just wanted to warn people of this company. In several of the reviews the company's response is a generic cut and pasted paragraph, e.g. it is not personalized. Also they have frequently sighted that customers go to www.championenergyservices.com/monthtomonth in an effort to say "see we posted our month to month rates and you just didn't look at them", but in reality I thoroughly searched the website and never found a link to this page. It seems to be hidden or only accessible from their responses found here. Additionally there are no links from their residential services page to show prospective customers what their price hikes would be comparable to after their contract ends. I find these tactics to be unethical as they ultimately manipulate prospective customers. I hope this helps someone out there stay away from another bad company. I finally signed with StarTex Power. Their responses to customer's complaints were the best and their website, although in need of updating, was not deceptive. Hopefully it is a good choice. I will review them under the headline "Girl from FL" after a year of service.

I did not have to be present for them to connect it. Received 1st bill today for $32.00, hopefully on my next bill i get the $25.00 credit for using someone else's promo code.

Never sent me a bill, cut off my electricity after admitting it was an error on their part!!!!

Bradly K., Baytown TX - 2012-08-09 12:26:36

I signed on with champion last year, no problems until now. I have not received a bill since I moved into my new apartment, I called to check my bill and they said I was late on my payment. I was told they had accidentally starting sending my bills to my e-mail account ( I do not have internet service ) and that my electricity was going to be shut off within 24 hours. As an unemployed father of 4 children under the age of 6, I am unable to pay a $72 bill until next week and they would not allow me a few days to get the money together. Now our electric has been off for 3 days and my children are burning up! I paid a $350 deposit and they shut my electric off for a $72 bill!

Regrets - just another tricky reseller

DR, Chicago - 2012-07-31 15:43:03

Rates are comparable to local service. They bill separately from our provider. Unreasonable payment terms (15 days) AND I had issues trying to pay on-line, every time. Got so aggravated each month I just said screw it and lety them wait for the USPS. Watch the contract. They bail on you and stick you with a large "TERMINATION FEE." Wish I could tell my customers to buzz off and send them a bill - I'd be a mogul too.

Hi DR, sounds like you are a commercial customer in Chicago. In that market, commercial customers receive one bill from Champion Energy for their electricity supply, and a separate bill from ComEd for their delivery. (Residential customers in Chicago receive one combined bill from Champion). Customers in Chicago can pay online using Automatic Bank Draft (one time or recurring) and a customer care agent can help you set that up.

We loved Champion - just wish their rates were more competitive these days!

Marcy McGrady, Coppell, TX - 2012-07-16 16:57:10

We've been Champion customers for three years and it's been a real delight. The rates we had when we started with them actually went down with each renewal. Unlike other companies, they do not seem to offer new customers better deals than current, loyal customers. Dealing with customer service has always been a pleasure as well - very short hold times and the reps are courteous and knowledgeable. I just wish that their rates were more competitive. Our last 12 month contract expired, and they were almost a full cent higher than the competition so I went on a one month fixed rate extension that was competitive while I shopped around in the hope that Champion's rates for longer term agreements would drop in the interim. Unfortunately, that did not happen and the entire marketplace has actually gone up a little in the past 30 days. I was able to find a 'new customers only' offer from Reliant, who was our provider prior to Champion and have arranged to move to them. The Champion rep asked if she could see if they can do something to keep our business and I'm hoping they will be able to but otherwise we'll leave. Gist of this review - Champion is great if you can get competitive rates from them but it seems that right now at least, you have to be willing to pay a premium for their service. (I hope I don't find that it would have been worth it but feel that we need to try a different company given the savings being offered.)

David Thomas, Harlingen - 2012-07-16 05:04:08

I have been with them for a month now and I really like what I see. They are very straightforward, and have great prices. Electricity in our house has been exactly what I would expect from a major provider. I can see my electricity usage through the month in 15 minute increments online. I have auto-payments set up online some I never miss a payment (which our local water utility doesn't have so it makes me like Champion even more).

Just recommended Champion to a friend.

S.M., Dallas, Tx - 2012-07-10 18:00:37

So I saw all the negative and positive reviews and thought that I should add my experience in so that newcomers can have a good picture of what signing on with Champion is like: I've been with Champion for 3 and half years, and I signed on their Savings plan because it was the lowest in the area. There were some additional fees to the base rate that I had not been expecting, but they were not unreasonably high - only around $15 for meter reading and tax (and both my previous electric companies had comparable fees as well - TXU and Reliant). We had no problems with any of our bills, in fact, because we were a bit forgetful, we didn't always get around to sending the payment until a day before the due date. Regardless, we were never charged any late fees unless our payment was post-marked after the due date, which we were grateful for. When we renewed with them, it was because they sent us several reminders for a rate that was 2 cents less than the current rate. When we moved apartments, we brought Champion over to the new address, but we had a few difficulties with the switch. Everything was switched over the day of our move-in, but we didn't get our bill in the mail. Champion called to inform us that our bill had been returned to their office, and was now past due. The address we gave was correct, but for some reason the mailman apparently had decided that we weren't in need of electricity. Champion resent the bill without charging late fees, and we switched to paperless billing and online payments, as there was no charge for doing so. Our rates had increased a little bit with the renew, but the new place was larger and had older A/C units, so we were a bit surprised to see the first bill - in the heat of Texas summer, it was $80 higher than the old place. We recently got the units replaced, and the electricity bill has gone down significantly. The only things that have ever bugged me about our electric choice was that 1) I had to change my username online when we moved (I used to have the same username/password for all the bills so that I didn't have to memorize 6 different combinations), which was also annoying because I could no longer access my previous bills from the old apartment and 2) their green energy plan isn't cheaper - I would love it if they could offer a comparable 100% renewable plan, as there are some other companies tempting me away with cheaper, renewable options. Any other issues I've had with electricity has always been Oncor's fault (charges/meter issues), so I really couldn't blame Champion for that. I personally have not had any problems with variable rates, but I have never been off of their fixed price contract.

Hi SM, Thanks for all your positive words! We do require that cusotmers change their user name and password for new accounts, so we can accurately pull up the right account. Our 100% wind energy plan is priced at a premium because wind energy is actually more expensive than traditional energy. But it's only a small premium, typically 1/4 of a penny (.002) more than our standard energy. And it's MUCH cheaper than the power offered by other Green-only companies.

Lyla Martinez, San Angelo - 2012-06-25 09:46:43

I have only been a customer for 2 months but am pleased with their service thus far. My main reason for choosing Champion was because they offered a lower monthly fee for not meeting the minimum usage and their minimum usage amount was less than other companies. My last bill showed I used 854kwh which with my last company would have resulted in a $9.99 monthly fee. Fortunately, with Champion there was no additional fee. I was also able to take advantage of their $25 referral credit by using a code I found online.

Bad service and inept service personnel

Randy West, Victoria, Texas - 2012-06-11 08:47:22

Had Champion Energy for my daughter’s college apartment. Put in a transfer notice for service at new address. After several confirming phone calls from Champion power was to be turned on Friday. As of this writing no power at 11 a.m. Monday. After many calls to the service department over the weekend and promises of calls from supervisors and emergency orders for connection ....no power. If and when they do get it on we will be shopping for a new provider. This is south Texas during the summer.

Surprisingly happy with a Texas power company!

positive energy, Killeen - 2012-06-07 12:31:31

We moved here from Idaho where power among other utilities are much less expensive! We contracted with another company our 1st year frustrated with so many choices and we chose wrong!!! Our bill was insane!!! last summer we switched to Champion afraid of our 1st bill, but I was shocked at our savings! I have 3 kids that don't know how to turn off a light or shut a door! Along with other large power using appliances and keep my heat and air at 76 degrees all year and have never had a bill near $200.00. This isn't bad considering our house is ran by power alone. They have been very clear with charges and no confusing extras tacked on. If they ever do have a billing issue they put the consumer 1st. I never leave reviews but, I read them and felt champion energy has earned my review.

Honest 10-Month Customer Review!

Corbin, Irving, TX - 2012-05-31 08:27:18

REVIEW I am a first time apartment renter / bill payer and I chose Champion based on the several good reviews I saw on the company. So far I have been extremely satisfied with the service and communication. After signing up, I have had to make several calls to verify online account information, and the customer service was great! They answered all of my questions and responded positively to any concerns. Their online web client is slightly clunky when trying to change info, but a quick chat with their reps fixed all issues I had and the account changes were immediately viewable. I have signed up for ACH transfer payments, and that went as smooth as possible, being deducted from my account next day! I soon after switched to Credit Card Payments which goes just as smoothly. As far as rates go, The company seemed to have some of the lowest in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I locked in for a 12 month plan, but they had variable rate plans as well. I will see how I feel come renewal time, but so far so good! I would definitely recommend Champion to anyone looking for energy services in the DFW metro.

They Have Been Great But Their Rates Are Too High Now

I switched to Champion over two years ago and have been extremely well satisfied. There has never been a problem and the one time I called customer service my question was taken care of immediately. But, I have to leave Champion next month when my contract is up. Why? Their rates. I was offered via email about three weeks ago a renewal rate a little less than what I was paying. I intended to accept the rate but didn't get around to renewing at that time. Then last week I got another renewal offer that was much higher than what I am currently paying. I was told their initial offer was no longer valid and the higher rate is now their current offer. Nope. Bye, bye Champion.

Great company; wish they had longer Green plans

Mark P, Alvin, TX USA - 2012-04-26 00:00:00

I've been with Champion for two years now, and am about to sign up for a third. When I first signed up for them, I was looking for the following company characteristics: 1) Decent rates 2) A 24-month 100% renewable plan 3) A solid track record After a lot of research,I did not find any companies meeting all three criteria, but Champion came closest. Switching from TXU to Champion was smooth, and in the first three months I saved enough to cover TXU's excessive cancellation fee. Online payments are simple to set up, and their website makes it easy to look at current and past bills and track usage. I haven't talked to customer service because I haven't needed to. And really, that's the point. An electricity provider isn't something I want to have to monitor every month, but I don't want to pay over the odds for what is just honest business practice. For me, Champion hits that sweet spot on price versus security.

Poor Customer Service and Billing

RJ, Southlake, TX - 2012-04-16 00:00:00

My personal home and businesses used Champion Energy for over a year. I moved to a new home that did not allow me to choose my energy provider. When I moved I paid my final bill. 6 months later I get a call from a collections agency saying that I owe Champion. I have never received an email, phone call or a letter stating that I had a balance that I needed to pay although the customer service rep said they tried to contact me. Tried to resolve it with the customer service rep but "it was out of her hands". Well I guess my other businesses will be out of their hands as I will cancel my service. I signed up with Champion from my previous state prior to closing escrow and moving after researching Texas Energy Companies via internet. This is my first year in Texas and the process of choosing your own Energy Company is very new to me. I have had no problems with my relationship with Champion. I am on a (1) year contract due to expire and am leaning towards renewing with Champion. But can you please explain something? My contract rate is .087. But a blurb on my invoice reads "The average price you paid for electricity this month is 10.926 cents per KWH. Why the difference?

Thanks for asking. You'll find this with every electricity supplier. The rate you pay for energy and delivery is 8.7 cents per kWh. On top of that are additional fees that are explained in the Electricity Facts Label. These are fees from Oncor, your delivery company (Advanced Meter Fee, Energy Efficiency Cost Recovery Fee) or from the Public Utility Commission (PUCT Assessment). Terry Waters, Hideaway, TX - 2012-02-24 00:00:00

Champion rate, Champion service, Champion agents! Very unusual in today's world. We have been with them about 3 years with no problems or complaints. When I call customer service, I get a real person in the U.S.A. (actually in Texas) quickly (try that with "you know who") and the agent is always helpful and pleasant. They want your business, of course, but they also act like they really care. Champion is what a service company should be.

Great experience for 1 year

Tom C, Dallas, TX USA - 2012-02-17 00:00:00

I used Champion energy for about 11 months now. No issues so far and never had to deal with customer service. The switch over from TXU was smooth without any incident. Great rates compares to TXU, but I do wish they offer slightly lower rates. Love their online account management. Had to pay using bank information (ACH) to avoid fees, but that's ok. Get bills via email and snail mail on time. Also love that all prior bills are available via PDF files for download. Easy to track my usage. It's overall a good experience. And they're offering a small discount to renew for the next year.

Very satisfied

Anonymous, Texas - 2012-02-10 00:00:00

I like champion energy a lot comparing to my old electricity provider. Champion Energy does not have hidden fees, and the bills are all as expected. I am also satisfied with their low fee. I am living by myself in my apartment, and their overall charge was always about 30% lower comparing to my old one. They charged me such a rip-off price with hidden fees and unreasonable rules. Now I pay around 18-30 dollars using less than 300 kilo watt per month (it varies.. my highest bill was $29). I guess champion energy is one of the cheapest providers in my area. Also quite satisfied with their customer services. At least, they get the phone right away, and they are not rude. I don't expect too much. I suffered such a bad time with other provider's horrible customer service in the past. Comparing to them, champion energy is just doing a good job. I use recurring payment through my bank account, and it costs nothing. So far, simply no problem and quite good service

Billing Issues

TimB, Houston, TX - 2012-03-02 00:00:00

I've been a customer for several years, and am leaving. I made the mistake last summer of being "market rate" during the huge spike in August. That was my fault. However, I entered a six month contract with them at the begining of September - I've received multiple emails (reminders, billing statements, etc) - confirming that my contract expiration date was 2/23/2012. However, upon opening my February bill - they have decided that my contract expired on 2/6 - so half of my current (and last) bill is market rate. So far, they have not responded.

TRY THEM YOU WILL NEVER USE ANYONE ELSE FOREVER

Angie, Dallas Area - 2012-03-02 00:00:00

I have been a customer with Champion for three years now and I promise you if you try them you will use them forever. If you dont believe me then call their number and you will be talking to a live person in 30 seconds and they dont try to trick you or promise you a promotion just to get your business. their number one priority is customer service so pick up phone and call them and see for yourself. I will never use anyone else. other companies try to give you money to use them but in the end they charge more and try calling other electric companies and see how long you stay on hold or tlalk to some salesperson who makes their money using the pyramid system, Champion is not like that, there are no gimmicks and one you try them like I said you never switch. They pride themselves on professionalism and customer service.

I LOVE them!!! Not only are their rates reasonable, but with the use of a referral code, you'll receive $25 off on your bill! Afterwards, they'll provide you with your own referral code to refer to others. This allows both you and those you refer to receive $25 off of you bill! I definitely will not complain because the last two energy companies I had charged me an arm and a leg for their services!

So Far behind the curve

S., Wichita Falls, TX - 2011-12-07 00:00:00

I switched over to Champions to get a better rate. First Problem is they charge $4 to pay online. I pay every other bill from water, cable, mortgage, phone, and security all online and no fee. Ridiculous! Second, I love the day payment is due. 9am I receive a disconnection notice in my email. Between 3-4 pm I receive another one saying thank you for my payment. So do I continually pay the late fee when I mail it with ample time or do i pay the online payment fee. Hard choice, because hours of arguing with them on the phone has not produced any better resolution.

When I first got with this company, they were great. I have now been with them for about 2 years and I have had enough. If you need to make any type of payment arrangement, the answer is "NO" and my bills average anywhere from 300-400+. This is a bad increase because prior to that I was only paying 147-189. I am looking for somewhere else, I can't take them anymore. I would not refer them to anyone.

As far as rates go, The company seemed to have some of the lowest in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area I would definitely recommend Champion!

Champion has very few options for rate plans and if you have an unusual lease term, be prepared... My rate tripled for the 3 months after my contract ended (no warning) and they do not have a 3 month plan. They have a large cancellation fee and an uncooperative spirit. By the way, don't expect them to remind you to renew a contract. Also, the numbers they suggest for off-contract energy are only 60% of what they actually charge you (and that is before fees). What a rip-off.

Crooks -- overcharging

Al C., Fort Worth, TX - 2011-09-12 00:00:00

I had picked Champion Energy because of their low rates. That is until my contract ran out and I went to another provider. Even after the 12 month contract had expired I was charged using their month to month billing price. This was still very low, so no big deal. I went with another electricity provider and recieved my FINAL bill ( 16 days ) which was more than the whole month prior. I finally got my bill in the mail and noticed they had charged me 3 times to amount per kWh ( 21.444 cents per kWh )than I have every been charged. I guess that is thier way of saying thanks for your business and here's your stab in the back for leaving us. I'll NEVER go back to these guys again....I don't care if they are the cheapest listing, because I'll pay in the ass when I leave them. I'll also be reporting this over charge to the BBB.

Al, Thanks for posting this and giving us the opportunity to explain. You can contact us directly to discuss this at feedback@championenergyservices.com. We never base a customer's rate on whether they are switching to another provider. Off-contract rates are calculated based on a published mathematical formula, or an "index." When customers are off-contract, they are charged a price tied to the daily wholesale price of electricity. When daily prices of power are up, your rate goes up. When they are down, the rate goes down. A history of this rate can be found here - www.championenergyservices.com/monthtomonth -- and will show that prices change with market conditions, not based on when the customer expires. The best way to avoid fluctuating month to month prices is to stay on a fixed price contract, regardless of who that contract is with.

This company and especially Angel (supervisor) are terrible to deal with, they try to extort consumers into signing a contract by inflating month to month rates WAY above fair market value - don't believe it, just compare the same plans from Champion and Green Mountain Energy (or any other TX provider). Champion (and Angel) you will get my $792 but it is the last cent you will ever get from me. And I know your response will be, we have never lost a complaint because we follow the rules. But like I told you, that is easy to do when you write the rules. Enjoy sleeping with the PUC?

Rebecca, I see in your recent posts that you say a notice is sent and that 17 days go by before disconnect. I have absolute proof that this is false. Also, your company did NOT send ANY notification AT ALL, AT ANY POINT IN TIME that my contact was expiring! Your company needs to do a BETTER job of notifying people about this "loop hole". My bill was over $800 this month and your "customer service" people were of NO HELP at all! This fee is ridiculous and I am going to make sure that EVERYONE knows how Champion Energy Services is handling my case! All my calls have been recorded, all emails (NONE!) documented- THAT I ACTUALLY RECEIVED. This is ridiculous, at the very least I would EXPECT Champion to "auto renew" the agreement as it was or is, then provide at least an option to pay a cancellation fee if they disco after the fact. These fees are absolutely ridiculous and I am going to make sure TEXAS knows about Champion Energy Services...

Mr. Bradshaw, All calls to our customer care center are also recorded, and I've verified that the renewal notices were sent to the email address that your wife provided to us at the time of enrollment. We'd always prefer to have a happy customer on a secure fixed rate plan rather than a surprised or angry customer with an expired contract. That's why, in addition to the contract expiration date printed on every bill, we also send renewal reminders via e-mail at 45, 30 and 15 days prior to contract expiration, and printed reminders are inserted into customer bills both before and after contract expiration. If there is no email address on file customers receive a renewal notice via US Mail. We support our customers' right to choose a provider and a plan that is right for them. For this reason, we don't automatically renew customers.

Horrible Company

At first I didn't know any better because this was my first time having utilities in my name as well as my own house. After my contract expired I didn't act fast enough to sign a new contract and am in a bad situation because of it. My rate slowly kept rising and rising. I understand with how hot its been (Houston, Tx) that my rate would continue to rise. Well come September when my August bill came in I almost had a heart attack. My bill jumped from being almost $300 to $520+!! I noticed my average rate jumped 12 cents in just one months time! I had already signed a new contract with a new company a week prior to receiving this bill but and now stuck paying this ridiculous bill. Champion energy is a failure and I will recommend anyone and everyone to never do business with this company.

D, we talked via email today and I'm glad I was able to explain what happened with your rate. I'm just sorry that we weren't able to talk before you switched away. We'd always prefer to have a happy customer on a secure fixed rate plan rather than a surprised or angry customer with an expired contract. When customers are off contract, we don't secure power for them ahead of time, so customers are charged on an "Index price," a formula that is tied directly to the daily wholesale electricity price. During Aug 1-30, there was a record breaking series of price spikes caused by Texas's August heat wave. That's pricing was not the norm for what out-of-contract customers are charged. Consumers who want to see a history of our "index" out-of-contract rate can visit www.championenergyservices.com/monthtomonth

Former, Houston - 2011-09-01 00:00:00

I've been a customer for 3 years, but will switch providers by end-of-day. My situation is slightly different - I had a 12 month contract when I started, and have been fine with running on the floating rate since then. In forums like this, Champion Energy's response seems to focus on "we told you that you were out of contract". I readily acknowledge that they have emailed me multiple times inviting me to committ to another contract. My five month average rate has been $0.109/Kwh - while today's bill was $0.23. If I go to their website today, I can sign 6 months for $0.089. A two cent float I can live with, 15 cents...no. Congrats - you warned me, I stayed out of contract and paid the price - for the remainder of my days in Houston, someone else will get my money..whatever the rate it.

Thanks for posting and confirming that Champion does give multiple notices of contract expiration. We would always prefer to have customers on a secure fixed price, rather than a month to month rate. When a customer signs a long term contract (even as short as 6 months), we purchase an electricity contract on their behalf (called Hedging). This allows us to lock in a low rate for the customer. When a customer is out-of-contract, they are billed on a month to month Index market price for electricity, tied to the daily Spot market. In August 2011, that market price went at high as $3 per kWh and averaged $.30 to $0.50 per kWh on some days. (For more information on August 2011 prices: http://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.cfm?id=3010.) Beginning with customer meter reads after October 1, 2011, Champion Energy customers whose contracts expire will roll onto a Month to Month Variable Rate Plan, rather than an Index. The new variable rates will allow us to help buffer our out-of-contract customers from the dramatic fluctuations of wholesale energy markets. If you would like to contact us directly to discuss this, please email feedback@championenergyservices.com.

Melissa, Texas - 2011-08-25 00:00:00

I just want to take the time to say I am very pleased with Champion Energy Services. From the moment I started my first contract I have had a personal experience with the associates. Their actually came a time when my finances had taken a toll for the worst and I owed over $800 in late bills. Through careful consideration of rules and regulations as well as what was best for me and my family and an ongoing relationship with one of the associates I currently have a zero balance on my account. Also, I have renewed my contract with no hesitation. I like when other light companies are trying to get me to change ( like Reliant and Green Mountain Energy ) and I say "oh I have champion". They turn their noses up and say " We can never get champion customers, they have the best service". To actually hear competition agreeing that Champion is the best makes me feel like I have made the right commitment.

I've been a Champion customer for over 2 years. After my first 1 yr contract expired, they immediately increased my rate by 50%. There was no notification on my bills that my contract was about to expire. I only went with them again because they had a lower rate than I had before the contract expired. But then I was about 1 wk late on a payment and they threatened to turn off my electricity within 5 more days. That did it. I'm going to another company as of Sept 2011.

I'm sorry that you were unhappy with our service. If you would like to discuss your concerns directly, please email us at feedback@championenergyservices.com At renewal, customers always receive our published rates, and these rates are based on current wholesale energy prices. Every Champion Energy bill includes a notice. You have a contract valid from xx/xx/xxxx to xx/xx/xxxx This is in bold 12-point type directly below the average price per kWh. We also email customers multiple times prior to expiration, and, if no email is available, mail the expiration notice. Customers who receive a paper bill also receive a renewal bill insert. Champion's disconnect policy is similar to other providers in Texas. We send a Friendly Reminder notice 3 days after the due date, and then 1 week after the due date, a disconnect notice that allows another 10 days, for a total of 17 days past the due date. We offer convenient automatic payment options at no charge -- recurring credit card payment and automatic bank draft so customers can pay their bills automatically.

Champion is pretty good

R. Bruce Meikle, Richardson, Texas - 2011-07-16 00:00:00

After a year of good service from Champion, I am moving on. They did a fine job, but when my contract came up for renewal, they sent me a letter offering a renewal price. I did not act on it for almost 10 days, and when I did, that price was not available. No mention was made of deadlines, and it was still close to a month before my current contract expired. Other reputable companies still offer better prices, and I am moving on.

Champion Energy Services Responds

2011-08-19 09:23:01

Thanks for the positive review, even though you were not happy with the rates offered at renewal. At renewal, customers receive our published rates, which can change based on current wholesale energy prices. Our renewal notices always include the text, Rate listed is the energy charge per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and is valid as of xx/xx/xxxx. Rate offerings are subject to change at any time without notice. Once the customer locks in a rate, that rate is fixed for the term of their agreement.

What a pleasure it was to speak with a rep (Ashley) this evening re: this company! What a magnificent change of pace of what I'm used to -- (anyway so far! -- once burned -- twice shy!) it was in dealing with a company that is OPEN 24/7 (and holidays) with a live person!! who was polite, articulate, spoke excellent English, and seemed really interested in my questions, and if she didn't know the answer, she placed me on a brief "hold" and got back to me with an "actual" answer! WOW!

I couldn't be any more pleased! I've had no issues at all....I have used the referral program also and must say I love those $25 credits! No horror stories here! MY ONLY PET PEEVE IS THAT IF YOU PAY BY CREDIT CARD THERE IS A $3.50 SERVICE CHARGE SO, I PAY BY MAIL AND PAY 47 CENTS. AT THIS TIME (APRIL 16, 2011 AT 13:43) THEY ARE A TAD HIGHER THAN OTHER PROVIDERS BUT MAKE UP FOR IT IN CLEAR LANGUAGE OFFERS AND FAIR AND HONEST SERVICE!

A satisfied Mesquite Texas resident

Dharmarajan, Mesquite, Texas - 2010-11-04 00:00:00

I did my due diligence (an important first step) in selecting a service provider, after being aligned with one for 29 years. Intangibles, such as, answering my queries to my satisfaction, explaining the rate structure, the pleasant disposition of the front office staff, and the important tangible item - suite of value products to choose from - helped my decision making. While I have been with Champion Energy for only a few months, I am hoping to be associated with them for a long time. Of course, this is a competitive market and hopefully, they will earn my trust and continue to provide vale-added service to retain me over the long haul. I have not been bashful about recommending Champion to a few like minded friends, who may be faced with making a choice in the near future.

Be careful what they tell you.

David Kepley, Texas, USA - 2010-11-01 00:00:00

In summary, great pricing, extremely poor customer service. I had a representative tell me one thing before my contract expired and found it to be untrue after it expired. I called to follow up on it and received another answer and was told I'd be credited if I resigned my contract. What they failed to mention was how much I'd be credited. Their customer service is deceptive, so be very careful what they tell you and get specifics otherwise the will not honor what you were told, not get back to you when you contact them, and certain not try to work with you.

These guys are jerks

Sue, Houston, Tx - 2010-09-21 00:00:00

Do not use Champion. They don't return calls, nor do they try to solve issues. They just blame you, charge you extras, and take no responsibility. Repeated phone calls never solve the problem, documented emails don't solve the problem, talking with customer service is like talking to a robot. And the billing department have attitudes that treat you unfavorably within the first call. And you get charged extras that aren't reasonable. ($50 one time charge for a returned check.) I would never recommend them...they start with low rates, but if you ever have problem, they won't solve it, they simply charge you additional fees you've never expect. And you have no recourse. The are very expensive if you have a problem. And when you're stuck in a contract, it feels awful. Don't use Champion Energy....they don't deliver the promised savings. They recover the charges when problems arise. They are not friendly people. I recommend 3 people based on the rates and recanted asap.

I have used other providers (Reliant and TXU) and Champion Energy is the BEST by FAR!! They have excellent rates, wonderful customer service and just an all around great company. Those other providers billing would be wrong, getting it set up was difficult, getting straight answers from customer service about the high rate changes was a nightmare. Champion Energy can't be beat for being the best all around electric provider!

I have no problems with my bills from this company. They were always right, always low, and always forgiven for their lateness when I forgot to pay on time. Which I do often. The thing is, they're really hard to get ahold of when you need to talk to customer service. And the pay-online feature WOULD NOT work with my computer (I have a mac), so I was constantly having to call and try to figure out why. They may have finally solved this problem, but I'm moving anyway so I'll probably switch.

I switched from Stream Energy due to their high KWH rate about a year ago. Champion's rate was lower and it has showed in my electric bills especially during the summer months. Online payments are easy & free unlike Stream which charges you $2.95, I did not have to make a deposit and the change order went through just like it should. I have recommended this company to several people who have switched and are just as pleased as I have been. Thanks Champion!

Beware of this company

James Jacoby, Justin, TX - 2009-11-27 00:00:00

We bought a new house and in the home buyers paperwork we signed for Champion Energy to be our service provider. Being a little tired of TXU, we tried it. Biggest mistake ever, in March 2008, we mailed a check for payment of $300, which was cashed, but our electricity was cut off the day after the check was cashed by Champion Energy. Never had my electicity cut off--ever--until that day. Customer service of this rinky dink place is small, so if you have problem with one CS person, the others CS people can overhear and you will have problems with them too. For two days, my electricity was off, I have 3 salt water aquariums, and Champion Energy CS people were rude. All over a month of service of $300, hate to think what it would be like dealing with them on high summer electric bills. Complete jerks, I changed providers when contract expired and they still tried to charge me early termination fee. Buyer beware of you choose them!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found champion on Texas Providers of electricity. There rating was good and took a chance. I had reliant and was fine until contract expired.1st month off contract 16cents/kilo, 2nd month jumped to 21 cents/kilo, what a ripoff. I called them 4 times to see what offers i could get. The cheapest over the phone was 16cents/kilo, I told them I was not happy and I would leave the company. They directed me to the company website and the best there was 14 cents/kilo. Goodbye Reliant and hello Champion at 10.4cents/kilo. No problems with billing, bit of a long wait to get a live person to pay over phone, but overall very happy.
