I have been a Reliant customer for over 8 years, and have been generally happy with their online account system and their various plans. However, when it was time to renew early in 2013, I had very few plans (no wind plans at all) available to me in my online account. When I called, the rep described a few more plans that were "only available through a customer service rep." When I asked for an online or mailed copy of the terms and conditions for my review before I signed up, he said that wasn't possible. He was able to answer my questions, but unable to provide the terms in writing before I signed up. After I gave the poor guy an earful (he was just reading from a script) and told him I was very unlikely to renew with Reliant after this experience, I asked to speak to a manager. I was put on hold, but after about 10 minutes I decided it wasn't worth it and hung up. Reliant appears to have gone downhill in my opinion. In my opinion their customer service is poor, and their available plans are not that competitive. I am currently searching for a new electric company.

I had issues with my payments thru Reliant's portal not going thru. Reliant said the request for funds were denied from my bank (Chase). I sat with Chase on the phone with Reliant for an hour verifying that NO request and/or denial of funds had ever been processes to and/or from the bank. That there was enough money in my account at all times. After an hour of my bank representative talking to Reliant we were disconnected. I also had conversations re; the issues where Reliant said they would take the 'payment returned' off my record and had me fax the information to their IT department re; their website/bank problems.....they now have no record of my fax submission nor that they said they would take it off my record. Very frustrating.

I was with Reliant for several years. I found them to be a good company to work with but they have become expensive and have hopped on the fee bandwagon in spades. Too expensive for me nowadays. But a good company to otherwise in my opinion.

Reliant put on an Allied Warranty plan to protect A/C units and wiring , etc . Although I agreed on the phone to try it . Supposed to send information to us to decide . Did not happen . They crammed the plan on the back of the bill , where people never looked. Cost was $ 16.99 a month , We did not notice the charge for six months because they sneaked it on the bill. I complaiine to 4 different people, and one said we should read our bill better . Complained to PUC - no help. Finally I asked Jeremy Rogalski from KHOU to get on the casae. They refunded our money within a day , just at the mention of the I Team. I think they wanted to shut us up, and they will be happy if we leave Reliant . There are probably a lot more people than us who were deceived in a sneaky way . I hope KHOU actually continues with the investigation. We have been with the same people for 40 years , but they hav completely lost our trust. You have to be up front with people , and they do not do that.

the reviews here for reliant energy are mostly unfavorable...yes, there are some cheaper plans out there, but doing the comparisons takes a great deal of time, and in the end, there are added fees or a difference in a disconnect or change fees that make up for a few cents per kw hour rate..i have been a customer of reliant energy since the start,as i had houston lighting and power before that who changed to reliant energy, who is now reliant energy an nrg company..sum total it comes to well over 30 years at different residences..their telephone customer service is ok,not great, but at least they answer the phone..if you have a problem, you are referred to centerpoint energy who actually handles the transmission of the electricity and any outages, and their telephone reps can be rude..reliant is basically just the billing name or so i was told,,in fact, centerpoint handles most of the electric companies you can choose from and they read the "smart meters"...if you rplan was changed to something "similar" to what you had (this has happened to me a few times)it is because of changes in regulations and lately , because of the new smart meters that can be read from the street..i am disappointed they no longer have the "wind driven" power, but if you want that, it is about 14.5 cents per kw with the other companies...overall reliant is as good as the others...i will have the newest "nights and weekends" plan when my contract expires, so i may change my mind!!

Have been with Reliant for about 3 years. I watch the offers on Power to choose website, and take the best offers that are available, staying with Reliant, because we have had such a good experience with them. We have some rental property, and sometimes had to have power turned on,temporarily, at a house after it has been vacated for us to do some work there. They have always been very efficient at taking care of our needs. Currently, our plan is about to expire, and Reliant is not anywhere near the best rate. I am not opposed to changing companies, to save money, However, I hate to leave Reliant. So I have been reading reviews, and every company has horrible reviews, including Reliant. I am thinking that most don't post a review until they have a bad experience, and it sounds as if that can happen with any company. I don't care for TXU. They tell you on the phone what their special rate is, and not until you pin them down will they tell you what it will really cost you, after the fees. I want to know the bottom line. I have always felt like Reliant has been honest with me, and felt that TXU was trying to trick me. After all that has been said, I don't know who I will go with, but will never allow any company to have direct access to my bank account, regardless of what I have to pay.

Their billing is spot on ! They always know how much to bill but that's a matter of self interest on their part. They are never late sending me a bill. Their accountants should be commended for their A/R Department (yes this is meant to be sarcasm Sheldon Cooper). Their most recent move was to make and receive approval on an application to the State to have their 6 month plan removed. This leaves us Reliant Customers with a sad set of choices - 3 months, 1 year or MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER. I just made my semi-annual phone call to Reliant only to find that it is now a quarterly phone call. I can always pay them 40% more than market rate to get 1 year or MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER. It was like any other time I have called. I get the run around. The I speak with a Supervisor. This time - the Supervisor merely repeats the same plans and with little care or concern. When I questioned the approach he remarked "you can choose to MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER". I was astounded with the blatant disregard for the Customer. He then made his "matter of fact" and robotic scripted comment - Do you accept this new rate and term ? It does bring new meaning to the term free market when the seller loses sight of the buyer. So - for those of you who read this post and if you have time to waste and money to burn - CHOOSE Reliant. For everyone else - MOVE TO ANOTHER CARRIER - Eduardo said to.

they sent a disconnection action after my payment was made. When I called to find out what happened they said that my service was interrupted for non service but that they saw that my payment was posted so they would send a reconnect request. they said it would take 48 hours!!!! It is sad how reliant's service is gear to accommodate the CNP not the customer. I am leaving this company!!!

I had been with reliant for a year and never had any issues. Their web-site had great tools that will let you track your usage by day, week, month and set up alerts etc. A lot of tools to track and manage your usage. Their customer service is also great.

Deborah S., Galveston - 2013-01-20 17:30:54
We had a HORRIBLE experience with Reliant in 2009. We are a military family, and moved to Galveston for 1 year while my husband attended a program at UTMB. This was the first time ever living in TX, and I was unfamiliar with the various companies and plans. Halfway through our first year, I realized we were paying WAY more than most other companies charged, so I called Reliant to see if they would reduce the rate to be more in line with the others. They flat out refused, so I switched to another provider. Reliant retaliated by charging us a $295 penalty fee for canceling! I called several times to get them to reduce the penalty fee, as it was too excessive. They were totally unwilling to negotiate, and sent a collection agency after us. We refused to pay the penalty; it took nearly 2 years to get the collection agency off our backs.

P. Brown, Plano, TX - 2013-01-13 16:13:56
I've been a customer of reliant for about 2 years. And every year in the month of December, I leave my home for 10+ days in order to visit family. And every time I've done this, Reliant charges me a higher bill than I had in previous months for that period of time. I've called them twice about this, and each time the representative lies and says they are reading my individual meter. This is impossible! The first time they charged my $2.50 to read it again, and of course they came up with the exact same reading. Because I was gone for so long, it would stand to reason my bill would be lower since I completely shut off the heat when I was away. I also don't ever use Christmas lights. I live in an apartment complex and figured they are simply averaging my bill with the other residents.- However, they deny this. If they just admitted to what they were doing, I could accept it. But they insist on lying about reading the meter. When I move into my new home, I will definitely not use Reliant. They are dishonest about their billing. You are not being charged for the actual energy you consume. You are simply being charged for what they "think" you should be using! And since I'm moving into an energy efficient home with bills that should average $125 all year round, I would rather not be charged what Reliant thinks I should pay (which will no doubt be $100 to $150 more than what I actually owe). This is a dishonest company, if you can help it do not get your electricity through them!!!

I have not had a great experience with this company from the beginning. Signing up took forever, I was incredibly sick at the time so to get it over with I got their prepaid electricity and at first it was fine. It is cheaper per kwh and was easier to set up. But then they screwed up somehow and turned off my electricity when they should not have. I have never used more that $3-$4 a day in electricity and most days it much lower I get a call one morning saying I have $8 and something left an estimated 3 days remaining. imagine my surprise when I get home and my lights are off. I go to work no lights or heater on and in six hours they say I have used more than double what I have on any other day and more than triple my average usage. Not only that when I call to say ok I'll pay it now just get my lights back on. I'm told they can't do that till morning, then fine well let me just pay it now so you can turn it on first thing. I'm told they can't accept a payment. Awful customer service still waiting on a call back about the ovious error in the usage. I am beyond livid at this point.

After 30 yrs. of being a loyal and responsible paying customer....I assumed Reliant was giving me the best rates possible in order to keep my business. WRONG! They try to offer you another plan which appears to be a lower rate but the surcharges are doubled or tripled. Read the fine print before signing up on a plan. Do the math ,,,,,there's other providers offering cheaper rates, no base pay, cheaper energy rates, and cheaper delivery charges. If the plan is vague and doesn't spell out an example of what your monthly charge will be with an itemized list of ALL the charges which are added on.....they are hiding something.

Without letting me know, they put a hold on my account that does not allow credit card payments. This was put on, as they told me, as a result of two credit card payments not being able to go through. I was shocked when they told me this, but then realized that I had my credit card stolen twice in the last five months. After explaining the situation to the person on the phone, their supervisor, and their manager, no one was able to do anything about it. They forced me to give them my checking account routing number to pay for it, which is completely unsecure. I use my credit card because I get mileage from it and if there is any fraud, the credit card company will cover me. Paying this way gives me no added benefits and I get stiffed with the bill if someone decides to use the information in unethical ways. This little rule they have is all to help them with no concern to a customer who has never had an issue paying bills with them nor anyone else. Each time the credit card payment was rejected, I called in and explained that the card was stolen and gave them the new number. However, they did not even send me in writing anything that said I couldn't pay with credit card anymore. I only found out when I tried to do bill pay online.

Steve, Fort Worth - 2012-11-03 13:07:40
Had Reliant for a few years - switched over based on cost. When moving and cancelling service, their customer service was awful! We keyed in all of the information after following non-intuitive phone prompts, then told the lady our information and then was transferred and had to tell our information again. Repeatedly. We gave them the forwarding address for a refund due - but they instead sent a credit to the old address. We called again and again had to follow phone prompts with information and then verbally providing info and then being transferred again and providing our info again... When will it stop? We moved into a house with service in place and did not need Reliant. We told them again - so we'll see if we get a refund or not. I do not recommend using this company - they apparently use 1 armed blind monkeys as customer service reps. Clearly they had an issue with listening and were rude. It's a pathetic statement of how American companies handle customer service and one that I see as a trend - unfortunately.

WHY do I have to choose a new plan year to year. Family and Friends have been living in the Houston/Pasadena area for years, NONE of them EVER have to PICK a plan. They all told me when I moved here just tell Reliant you want their BASIC PLAN-12, each year I have to fight with Relian Reps over the phone to KEEP my plan. This year it did not work, after being on the phone for over an hour, talking with 2 reps. and 1 supervisor, they REFUSED to LET ME KEEP THE PLAN I WAS ON, I caved in and got the next best one out of the choice given to me. AND by the way, they did move my plan renewal date back from Jan 10 to Nov 1. When I asked the supervisor why, she didn't know. Next year I will be switching probably to Star Tex, my son uses them and his rates are about the same, hopefully without all the hassel. Reliant tries to PUSH people into higher cost plans, like wind....Stay away from Wind or you will pay through the nose for it. Just trying to stay cool in this hot Texas heat has become a nightmare with the high cost of Elec.

Grace, Houston, TX - 2012-10-25 09:45:53
Here are a few things to expect from most energy companies: 1. After your contract ends, the energy company will send you a notification of your rate increasing to a variable rate (which usually translates to 2-3 cents higher/kWh by a certain date). They are supposed to notify you of this change. I've noticed as a customer, we get short-changed of one month from the contract rate (if you signed for 7 cents for 6 months, you'll only get that for 5 months). Then your rate goes up significantly if you don't call to change to a cheaper contract 2. Most companies have this basic $9.95/mo charge if you don't meet a certain kWh, usually 1000 kWh. That will pose a problem in those more temperate months like in the spring and fall because although you're paying lower kWh,you're paying that extra $9.95/mo for no reason. ASK YOUR ENERGY PROVIDER WHAT THE LIMIT IS. I got a minimum of 800kWh/mo with Reliant; if I go under 800kWh, I will have to pay $9.95. Good thing about Reliant is that they do a weekly energy usage report, and you can keep up with how much you may owe. That's pretty useful to me, considering I live in a smaller space, thus less usage. 3. Make sure to ask about any extra fees you should be aware of. That's how a few cheap energy companies can get you. For instance, ask if there are new connection fees, activation fees, month-to-month fees - pretty much ask them how does their offer compare to other companies. Although Reliant is not the cheapest company, they are relatively helpful when it comes to electronic notifications and online billing. Their customer service seems to be confused most of the time, but bilingual (spanish and english, useful in Texas). They aren't hard to get a hold of like other companies people have complained about. I've had them for a year now, and although my electricity isn't that cheap, it's comparable to other companies I could have went with. Every 6 months, though, I have to call and change my plan to another 6 month contract to keep costs "low." People are more likely to post negative reviews than positive reviews - for every one positive review, there is probably 5 more negative reviews for energy companies. Just keep that in mind because everyone's negative personal experience has actually gotten me to ask these companies the right questions on what to expect.

I had reliant for a while and I was paying A LOT of money but I was in contract and I couldn't change, I called reliant and apart from waiting for what it seemed like an hour to get a representative to answer, and once they finally answered I told them I was switching to a better company with a lower rate and they told me they could give me 4 cents per kilowatt, so I renewed contract with them...WORST DECISION EVER!!! I got my first bill and what I found out was that the rate they offered was a COMMERCIAL rate which made my bill go up to almost $300 for 1500 kWh since now the Delivery Charges went from $4.65 on my other bills up to $122!!! DON'T PICK RELIANT IF YOU ARE SMART!!! I'm now with Ambit Energy, they are super super friendly and the rate they offer per kWh is already AVERAGED, so now for my 1500 kWh the total for my statement went down to $152.58!!!

I moved to Houston two years ago from out of state. Choosing an electricity supplier was a new experience for me. I started out with Reliant so have been a customer for two years. I called customer service yesterday to find out when I can switch without paying the early termination fee. I never did find out. I intended to switch because the rates being offered to me were at least 2 cents per kwh higher than what is available from other providers. Eduardo kept me on the line way too long presenting offers. I asked to have the EFL sent to me for an offer than finally appeared to be reasonble. He claimed not to know what an EFL was! I told him I would not agree to anything over the phone an hung up. I will switch to someone else now just because that call was so irritating and why should I have to call to get a better rate. They should try to keep my business without making it a hassle.

This company is so bad to work with and so much higher than their competitors that we just paid the termination fee to get out of the 1-yr "contract" that we were in. They have no customer service, their account management is terrible, and their rates are 25-30% higher than everyone else's. They are just middlemen (traders) making a quick buck between the companies who make the electricity and the people who need to use it.

The due date changed and when I asked to be moved to the same as the month before they refuse, they claimed a year ago I had a late payment. I spent an hour with the first repo, then the supervisor. I have been with this company for many years, I spend about $600 dollars a month. No more, I'm looking for a better company, one that treat me like a customer not their child.

I had been a customer of TXU for over 30 years. I moved to a new location and decided to give Reliant a try. I signed up, luckily, for a month to month plan. When I talked to the CSR over the phone, I gave her the date of move-in. When I received email confirmation, the date was incorrect. I called them immediately to correct this, and they told me sorry, we can't correct it. You'll just have to pay for electricity on an apartment that is not yours for an extra day. In addition to this, on my first statement, there is an unauthorized charge for $49.00 for something called Reliant Easy Move Elite. I didn't not authorize this charge nor do I want it. They will not remove it. They can only put it in "dispute" and it will take 60 days for resolution. It finally was removed last month, only to reappear on this month's statement. I have filed a complaint with PUC for cramming. Let's see if this can resolve it. I would NEVER recommend this company and if I can get this unauthorized charge removed from my account, I will be shopping for electricity elsewhere.

I been having Reliant energy for over a year now. I like some of the customer service Reps since some show attitude over the phone. I don't any problems with their plans since i always research my info before signing up. (to the ppl complaining about the rates being 8c etc and after taxes is 12. pay attention to the EFL because that is where you get your break down. the rates do not reflect taxes ONLY surcharges from the utility company in the area like for me in houston is center point, dallas/forth worth oncor and this is the ppl that have the right to raise those surcharges and that is why your rates are high) i have been satisfied until now that i have to renew the options are not that great but surely will research more

I see the offers for signing up with Reliant. With smart meters (which were not even an option when I signed on to my plan), discounts from 8 to 8, $300 incentive, lower prices for kilowatt hours, but for a customer that has been with them for about 12 years, nothing! I would have to pay $150 to upgrade my plan. If I do decide to do that I will be looking elsewhere.

I am new to the Odessa area and decided to use them for my energy needs. I called them on Tuesday 8/14/12 and spent close to an hour on the phone getting everything set up to begin my service. I was told that I could get service the very next day which was awesome. The next day I get an email that says that I will need to send in a copy of my lease. I sent in a copy of my lease at 10:06am on 8/16 and was then told that they cannot get my service on until POSSIBLY Monday. It is 100 degrees PLUS in Odessa. I'm without any electricity until who knows when. Don't believe that they will do what they say when they get you to sign up.

Laura, Katy, TX - 2012-08-13 10:26:56
I have had a few electric providers in the last 6 years and this is by FAR the worst! I went with reliant because the rates I found online beat the other competitors. I wish I had read the previous reviews before enrolling in a 2 year contract... I signed up online entering the address, for connection on 6/22 which was the closing date for the house. The closing then got delayed a week, and when we came in the house on 6/28 the power still wasn't on. We called reliant and they said their computer says its on since 6/22, but we will send out a tech to look at the meter within 2-3 hours. The tech came and left, without leaving a note or even knocking on the door. We called Reliant again after about 6 hours when the power still wasn't on, again they said the computer says the meter is running and its connected. Took about an hour before they realized that the meter that is connected is for the sewer lift station next to the property, and the actual house they put an "A" at the end to tell the difference between the two. I then spoke to two reps who told me that they will put in a service ticket and I will not be responsible for charges to the lift station since that belongs to Harris Co. Mud. I checked online and charges were still on my account along with a new charge for $64 for connection and service fees for the lift station. I called again only to be told, they would put in a new service request and I would not be responsible for charges. Received a bill in the mail on 8/6 stating that it is due for 8/13 for the lift station, called back 3 times spoke to one rep and two "supervisors" to be told that the issue has been reviewed by two departments and it was not their error, and I should have called to set up service instead of doing it online and this wouldn't have happened...if you dont reccomend doing the online set up due to probability of errors, then why is it available??? Needless to say I will never be going with reliant energy again, the discount in rate isn't worth the 10+ hours I've spent on the phone with them over the last month!

Reliant sent us an advertisement stating a $300 sign up bonus for the "Reliant Secure 12 with 20% wind plan". The flier states to call or go online for additional details; however, when you enter the information into the web as directed and it brings up 3 plans. The name "Reliant Secure Advantage - 12" comes up twice. Both links have the exact same details on them except one is 8.9 cents per kWh and the other is 10.2 cents per kWh, but neither one says anything about the wind plan or $300 sign up bonus. I called and was told the flier I had doesn't exist. I got to the "Executive Complaint Department" and spoke with Denise. I emailed her screen shots and a scan of the plan (I still have the evidence) to her as requested. She told me it was a "web error" and if I wanted the $300 bonus it would be almost 12 cents per kWh. They will NOT honor their advertisement!!

What a SCAM!! Reliants great prices are for new customers. After you finish your 12 month contract, you are advised that you need to change your plan. Two choices are given. Both significantly higher than the first year rates. Why can't I just continue with my current plan??? Customer service told me uanble to renew that plan....I guess they want more MONEY....GREEDY!!!!!

One of the selling points for us to sign up was that they did not outsource their Customer Service. That is no longer true. They are outsourced to Mexico and they cannot/won't understand what we are asking. It also takes 20 to 30 minutes of waiting before a rep is available to answer the phone. We have asked for a combined statement of our security lights & home over and over again. They say they will and the billing period we receive 2 statements.

So I cancelled before I had a chance to use the company. When I called back to termintate service the lady flip modded on me and was a horrible beast! So glad a got out when I did.

I kept recieving a busy signal on the fax number so I called again. They gave me a different fax number and told me to follow up the next day! I needed the proof of electricity to move in. So I cancelled before I had a chance to use the company. When I called back to termintate service the lady flip modded on me and was a horrible beast! So glad a got out when I did.

Besides having the highest rates in Houston, this company has no accountability at all. They confirmed turning off my service on 6/29 but kept on billing me after it. After an hour on the phone with 3 different people from customer service, I am being told that the request to turn it off did not go through and it as scheduled for 7/30, with me being billed for all these day (even thought I already got a new provider and also being billed by my new provider at the same time). Was with Reliant for 3 years and received letter explaining contract to expire in less than a month so called Customer Service. Verified all information with Mario only to discover he couldn't discuss matching competitive rates. Transfered and verified with a lady who, after hearing my request for a 12 month contract at a lower rate, put me on hold - twice. Didn't like the rap music so I hung up the second time and although a recall number had been requested, never heard from Reliant in the next 2 hours. Apologies if I sound like a curmudgeon but I just wanted to renew at a rate being offered by multiple other firms. Much like the TV providers, Reliant seems to be more proficient at attracting new clients rather than renewing present users. Oh well, contrary to what their business model indicates it's too easy, cost free and seamless to switch so, 'Hello Brilliant Energy'.

I have been happy with Reliant's service but every year its the same thing. My contract expires and I have to call them to renegotiate my rates b/c they offer rates higher than I am currently getting or that I see offered online. Its a hassle, but they usually come back with something I can live with.

Matt, Houston, TX - 2012-06-03 13:05:21
Recently my 12 month "Cap and Save" term contract expired. Reliant made 2 renewal offers. One floating rate plan (power tracker @ roughly 10 cents per kWh at $3/MMBtu Natural Gas), and continuation of a Cap and Save (approximately 11-12 cents per kWh). These rates are uncompetitive, with current offers sub 9 cents per kWh. I chose Power Tracker so I was floating month to month to explore my options. I never received an EFL for the plan, nor was I able to view it online. My account said that I would be able to view the documentation 3 business days after the transition took place, meaning that I wouldn't receive the EFL until the 3 day Federal "grace period" for cancellation was over, leaving me liable to pay a $150 cancellation fee (per Reliant Customer Service) even though the plan is advertised without a fee. In response they offered the same Cap and Save plan at 11 cents per kWh, when they are offering 9.1 cents and 9.5 cents for 6 and 12 month fixed terms on PowertoChoose.org. They refuse to offer me a lower rate, so I cancelled service and moved to Amigo energy for 8.6 cents per kWh (12 month fixed). The only thing I was satisfied with was order experience and billing. Orders were completed on time, and billing a non-event. I would not use Reliant, but if you do, be prepared to switch services after your initial contract expires.

We switched from TXU a yr ago. Their bills are simplified. They quote flat rates i.e. oncor delivery charge, etc. However, now that our one yr fixed plan is up the "only" options they have "at this time" (per cust service rep) is an energy charge of 11.0/kwh or 10.5/kwh. I am not paying 5.9/kwh. There are some other charges but those don't change. When searching on powertochoose I found not only does reliant offer plans (same 12 month fixed) at 8.9/kwh. AND other companies are offering 7.7, 7.9, etc. They told me to go online to my acct & see what else is offered. IF I don't find a better rate (than what she quoted) call back bc they don't want to lose my acct. WTH - why not save us all some time & just be competetive now. Why do I have to go online, call back, blah, blah, blah? And btw - online only offerd 11.0/kwh.

i just signed up for Reliant again. Our house is large and we use 3 to 5 thousand kilowatts a month. My last plan I was paying 6 cents a kilowatt hr. So I couldn't call them without a charge. Big deal. I was saving 300 hundred dollars a month compared to a couple of years ago. Heck that is worth the hassel of emailing if I have too. I am about to start paying 7.5 cents and its 100 percent renewable energy. Now I am green and still getting a pretty good deal. The service representive was very nice and I barely had to wait more than 2 minutes to talk to her and no service charge on that call. This time the calls are free. YEA! I am so happy.

I'm on a Secure 12 w/20% wind, signed up fall of 2011. Agreed to 11.70 & flat rate 3.43 + 0.1111 Kwh trans distribution charges. Thinking this was a contract for 12/months, I have noticed small changes in agreement that of course to their advantage. I spoke to cust. service and wanted to no why they do not show a break down of my trans dist. charges on my bill and even couldn't tell me or how, when I could figure it out. I did a little research on their website pretending to be a new customer and noticed the last 2/months I have been paying $4.07 + .3773 based on new customers coming in under their Secure-12 100% wind program & that they will pay a 9.7% instead of my 11.7 which also has been going up over the last 6 months, not down. Reliant hooks you & then starts the game plan to increase prices on their behalf not the customers. Its just like floating prices hanging around in the air & no one at Reliant can explain the increase and how to figure it out.

Reliant is never lower after they slam you with so many fees and taxes.Always try to go with an out of state electric company that way you will not be hit with so many fee and taxes. Even if the rate states 8.7% after they tax and fee you- you will pay about 12%.Most people never think to compare taxes and fees...

Ok I am so mad wow here it is DONT EVER GO AND GET ENGERY FROM RELIANT even if you sign for a contract they can break it says it on there EFL thats electricity facts label... so to get cheap ele. from them u have to use more that (2000 12.7 centskwh every month) (so if you use like 500 or under 1000 kwh you have to pay .14 cents a kwh) more dont make any sense to me that i would have to use more ele. to get it at a cheaper kwh but i would have to pay more in the long run so in short... RUN DONT NOT WALK FROM THIS COMPANY RUN DO NOT PASS GO THE WILL SCREW U AS FAST AS THEY CAN... Ok u be the judge would you rather pay 128.00 in your bill or 240.00 reliant says my kwh would be cheaper if i used 2000 kwh a month but in a month my bill would be 240.00 its stupid charge u more for using less...

Reliant has a lot to learn in terms of customer service, follow up and knowledge base. They are open 24/7, true, but their call center is delocalized and the level of information provided off hours is not meeting standards. As most providers, after the first contract expires they will jack up your rate. They are really naive and think consumers are not savvy and won't shop around.

Not alerted of power shut off via mail or email. I had an issue with my bank payments and never was alerted by Reliant. I offered to immediately pay on the website but felt it was their position to not have me pay the reconnection or late fees. I was not offered nor did I get any of their reps to acquiesce. After I called with no help from any of the 3 representatives I decided to immediately switch. I had my power back on with Mission Power within 3 hours.

Been a Reliant customer for 18 months and our contract is about to end. So i'm looking to renew. I'm looking at the letter sent to tell me that my contact is about to end, however no where does it state on what date that will be. All that is written is "your current contract is ending soon." When it does expire, they will automatically put me on a month to month at a much higher rate. Why can't reliant just tell me when rather than me having to go to their customer support. Secondly, when looking at other plans which are available, I am offered two, both of which are more expensive than what i currently have (the current one is not cheap - 11.2c/kWh). On calling their customer support again, I'm told I have no other options, although I can stay on the same plan I'm currently on.... So why wasn't that an option on your website. Unfortunately its time for me to move from Reliant, it's clear Reliant witholds information from customers to benefit themselves....

After signing with Reliant, I signed up for auto-pay. 2 months later I am sent an overdue notice. I go to their website and it does not show I am signed up so I pay bill and sign up for auto-pay. 2 months later, I get a termination notice saying it will be turned off in 9 days. I go to Reliant website and see that once again I am not signed up for auto-pay. I am wondering how long it takes for this to go into effect. I pay my bill and sign up for auto pay. 9 days later, my electricity is turned off because they have not received payment. What!! Was told it takes up to 10 days for payment to be received and I needed to pay with customer service to get electricity back on which I did so I was out over $900 in 10 days. I found out that the payment I made was credited to an old account which they blamed on me saying I went to my old account. I only logged in and paid. I didn't choose any account but then Reliant accepts no responsibility, ever! Don't use them!!

We live in a 665sqft condo in Downtown and the bills keep going up even though we have installed insulating window shades, timed our A/C on a digital thermostat, raised the temperature to use less A/C and cut back to conserve on electricity in general. I asked my Fiancé what the rate was per KWH and he sent me a screen shot. I was floored when I saw that it is currently $0.163 per KWH. Time to make a change and kiss being ripped off good bye!

While we have never had any issues with customer service or receiving our bills, the rates were always high, so we signed up for average billing to have a consistent bill. We had already been with the company for a year and it was explained that they could take our past years usage as well what we were currently using to estimate and average our bill. It also helped with budgeting to have a consistent bill. In the end, our term is up and we now owe them $250! What the h$$$! My bill was pretty consistent. It seemed like they knew what they were doing. They have computer systems for this. It seems like they could do a much better job at averaging than this. It's simply ridiculous!?! Needless to say we will be changing companies due to Reliant's incompetance, high rates, and silly litte extra fees.

Reliant is a company you continously have to negotiate with. You have to go at least 3 levels to their "negotiating" team. Be prepared to state you have a lower offer. You call one number and they can only offer you so much, which is normally about 1 cent kWh less than the offer. Be prepared to spend some time with them if you want to stay with them. I hate that I have to do this, but feel most companies do this anyway. Guess that's how they have the stadium in Houston named after them. Someone has to pay for the name, but I won't. Shop the competition so you are prepared with any offers they throw your way. All in all, we are after the lowest rate, so why not offer this to us from the beginning.

I am writing this review regarding a recent solicitation we received from Reliant Energy that I feel others should know about. The gentleman from Reliant said he could get us a lower rate on our electricity asked to see a bill. Looking at our bill, he stated he could give us a per kilowatt rate of 5.4 cents verses our Average rate of 9.8. This seemed unbelievable and of course we wondered how we could be paying so much when lower rates were out there. After he left, we jumped online and went to Reliant Energy's website and saw the 5.4 cents per kilowatt the representative talked about. But then we saw the 'Average Price', which included the fees, taxes, ect.... What a surprise! The 'Average Price' for Reliant's rate of 5.4 was the same as our provider', who we pay 8.7 cents with! So beware!!! The rate is not just the per kilowatt charge! It would seem after this encounter that Reliant may have a lot more 'Fees' than other providers out there!

Switched to Reliant when they had a come-on 5.2 cent rate a few months ago (Basic Power Flex). Sadly, they just jacked it up to 8.1. They don't tell you, so you have to monitor their website. Still a pretty good rate so we'll stick with them for a while but we may have to shop around again shortly if they stealth increase on us again. Anyway, we had a good run of 3 months of low bills in the heat!

I've moved around a lot throughout southeast Texas, so I've paid electricity bills to a lot of companies. When I finally bought a home, instead of renting, I switched to Reliant because of their cap-and-save plan. First of all, this is plan is a gimmick and was the worst choice. Fine, my fault, right? But when I started noticing that my bill was steadily increasing, and my stated kwh usage was through the roof, I decided to start monitoring the meter on my own. I then realized that their reading was way higher than my own! I grew up around building houses, I know how to read a meter successfully! When I called the company, we went back and forth on who was right. I told them my side, and they told me theirs. When I told them I've been monitoring my meter myself, and their readings were higher, (I was told I was using over twice as much as what I read I was using) the rep basically told me I was wrong and they were always right, ignoring my argument. So now, I'm switching.

I've been a Reliant customer since 1980. I've considered changed providers over the past few years but, when I read reviews about the other providers, I realize that Reliant is just as good as any of the others. Sometimes I've gotten locked into a price that was higher than I'd have liked but that was my own fault. I also had occasion to contact Customer Service last year when an obvious error was made in reading my meter (before the smart meter installation). The representative was very helpful and scheduled a re-read of the meter immediately. She did advise me that I'd have to pay a service fee if it was found that the meter reading had not been in error, but the reading WAS in error and my bill was amended right away. I really like Reliant's Home Energy Audit program and I also really like being able to track my energy usage online by the hour/day/week. Those two programs have helped me focus on how to reduce my energy usage.

I started with reliant from TXU. After I recieved a $600.00 bill from TXU and they were not willing to work with me ( I had just had surgery and it was 104.0 outside). I paid them and switched to Reliant.Reliant mixed up my order and I went 2weeks without electricty. They were in no hurry to fix the mistake either. My first bill was $150.00. I was sold. A big difference from TXU. This was in 2001. That is over ten years of loyalty. Is it returned, no. They put in the smart meter Dec. 2010 and my bill zoomed from 1$150.00 a month (during summer too) to a wooping $700.00!!! Good luck on getting anywhere with custumer service because you are speaking to INDIA! and they are only reading the screen. This company had gone down hill. I do not recommend them to anyone.

We have been with Reliant Energy since Jan 2011 under a 6 month contract. We were notified by mail that our contract was nearing the end and we would need to re-sign. Our rate was 8.1 cents per kWh. Now they are offering us 10.6 cents. A big increase and at a time that has proven to be Texas' highest electric usage months. Have had no problems with service since switching from TXU but can't justify the jump to 10.6 when there are so many other companies out there offering better rates. So I'm shopping. Would consider staying with Reliant but they seem more interested in getting new customers than keeping current ones. If they would match a rate that another company offers I'll stay. But if not, I have to think of my pocketbook and what's best for our family. Wish me luck.

(every other company will just tell you the total from start, i should of spot the catch already) but since everything was almost set up, i just let them do it. i ask the sales rep at least 4 times and she confirmed that Reliant will pay for my cancellation fee with Startex. (really i got nothing to gain by switching, but i just didnt feel like rejecting). after months i still dont get my $250 cancellation fee back. they tell me my plan don't come with the credit, and i will have to switch to a 24 month and more expensive plan. Cap and Save is what I was pitched and after hearing the low rate I felt so wanted and appreciated. 4 or 5 months later I started to realize that my bill had not ever been what I perceived to be low especially in a newer home than I had been in before. Long story short, I discontinued service after my last month bill was tapped at $714.85 with a delivery charge of $184.61! I have never had a bill higher than $200 and they or I cannot explain why it went from $200 to $700. If anybody can tell me how to go about disputing this please do. I have flown the coup of Reliant Eenrgy for good.

Johnson, Texas - 2011-03-08 00:00:00
In my last Reliant bill, I was accused of tampering. The bill was $800; my former bills have been an average of $70. I was told that Oncor has proof of my meter being broken; that somebody has damaged the cover and that they therefore billed me with the estimated usage! I unsuccessfully spent about 3 hours on the phone with Oncor and Reliant; I tried to file the formal dispute via email towards Oncor; their reply was that the "Retail Electric Provider has to dispute the charges on the customers behalf". I have neither broken nor manipulated my meter by any means, nor did I use the amount of electricity I'm being charged for. I do not intend to pay any of the tampering charges that Oncor claims. I talked to the Police department for false claim of fraud but I can't file a report, because I don't own the meter. I also talked to an attorney and he suggested taking this to small claims court. It's ridiculous that they charge me for electricity I haven't used! I'm very disappointed!

Consider another provider. On repair issues and billing be prepared to deal with customer service in India and this is after navigating their "phone tree". They usually want a number to call back, at their convenience. I want to know how they can afford to pay for naming rights to Houston's giant football stadium but can't afford to pay minimum wage for a US call center. On two occasions I was told that my power would be restored within some specific time period and both times they did not deliver. Recently my $100 electric bill ballooned to more than $500 when I called the far east to inquire about this, I was told that because I had made several late payments and had my service disconnected some time ago. I was being charged an additional deposit. I explained that I had paid a deposit to have my service initiated but, was told this was a response to my slow payment. I countered that on each occasion they had charged me a separate fee. They continue to insist on this deposit.

"Customer care representatives are ready to help you 24-hours a day for $5.95 per call." That is a direct quote from the fine print on one of their terms for enrollment found on this website. Since when do you charge for customer service? Especially, when you are charging a crazy amount per kwh? They have more fine print and fees then you could shake a stick at. Im glad I read through all of it before joining!

Every time my plan expires they want to enroll me in a higher plan and usually a month to month plan. The plans they use to get new customers is always cheaper that the plans they use to keep customers. After 3 years of this I am leaving Reliant.

Reliant has a facade. They come off as having great plans, specials, promotions and coupons, but when you try to sign up for ANY of these there is a huge catch that puts you in a bad situation. I especially have issues with their coupons because they only state what you can have and not what you have to sign up for. Most coupons tell you in small print what you have to sign up for to redeem. However, Reliant has mover coupons that you receive through the post office that state you can have X-amount of dollars off of a bill for signing up with the company and in no way does it say you have to get a certain plan to do this. It comes off as a sign on incentive but really is a ploy to get you to sign one of their lengthy contracts. Their plans all have a "catch 22" cell phone company feel to them and I do not recommend this company. I have been a customer for a couple months now...my bill is sky high...and I'm not a happy customer!

I had been dealing with the death of both of my parents. When I realized that my account was behind and a disconnect notice was sent. I contacted them and spoke with "john" via there chat interface. I explained the situation and asked for 5 days extension until I got paid on first. I was told "I understand the financial situation and hope things get better for you, but we will not grant an extension as you should have made contacting us before the due date a priority" I was 3 days over the due date. It was also Thanksgiving day. I guess I should be thankful of a company so understanding.

This electric company is a rip off. They miss lead customers, and tell you that the conversation is being recored, and when you tell them to find the recording of them saying what they promised or had you agree on, suddenly what was said, they have no record of.

I have not had many real issues with reliant. However, I have only been with them the two years I have reisded in TX, so I don't know any other company. The rates have been RATHER steady, with only about a $30 change across the months. I know each month I will have about $100 worth light bill. But the highest I have paid...when the plan kicked in, was about $120. I hope to find a better rate and lower prices now that I am trying a new company... who knows?? I will surely let you know when I know something and my feelings toward reliant may be a little more negative! :)

I have been with reliant for 9 yrs & they continually estimate reading my meter even after my requests for notice it had been read. My bills jumped with no explanation -impossible to talk to a supervisor and would not adjust my exhorbidant rate even after excellent payment schedule and request new service rates. They offer new service competitively while charging long standing customers ridiculously high rates. I would NEVER recommend this company of inept capabilities and deceitful practices.

Twice, they grossly overcharged me. For a 2/2 apt, we averaged $100-$120/mo on a fixed rate plan. This last time they overcharged, they claimed we used over 3000 kwh in a month! The bill was $300+! I called their customer service line and explained to two reps, who agreed and sent me to their manager. She said while we waited the 30 days for Centerpoint to check and make sure the meter was working properly, she'd defer my payment. What she neglected to mention was screw it, we're charging you late fees though we've deferred your payment. And then they pulled a $200+ bill the next month, though I was gone all month and my roommate gone half for work! After 2 months calling them and arguing the point, what do I get? Not a return of the $45 check-your-meter fee, and definitely not a retraction of the "late" payment. I was supposed to receive my final bill/refund in 3 weeks. 2 months later, nothing. Way to screw up, Reliant. I wouldn't refer them to an enemy, much less a friend.

I've been with Reliant in Houston since the beginning before dereg. I've always thought of changing companies, but every time I do and begin to research the others, I always find serious complaints about others' customer service and especially overbilling or cramming new plans onto existing customers. Reliant has never done any of this to me, and while I pay a penny or even 2 above some "cheaper" advertised rates by the newbies, I trust Reliant to give me the bill I deserve. I have a new digital meter, so it's pretty hard for anyone to overbill me now that I can see the numbers. Reliant Energy has a good enough Web site that shows billing and usage history. I am on average billing, so get the same $ bill each month. I'm happy enough to stay with Reliant. I give them a 4/5 stars. I don't give a 5 to any one because I am mad at general rates for energy, but this is not really Reliants fault.

Reliant always blamed AEP for their billing mistakes. Example, I was overcharged 5 out of 12 months. I had to sit on the phone and told that if the meter was re-read, I would be charged a,I think $10 fee. My question to them was if they were wrong, were they willing to give me a $10 credit. They were wrong 5 times out of 12, but of course, they declined my offer. I know this much. Reliant doesn't offer competitive rates and "nickel and dime you to death" with all sorts of fees. Do not recommend them at all.

Reliant is a horrible company with zero customer focus. They deceptively move customers to higher rate plans when the customer's contract expires. They do nothing to retain their customers when issues arrise. When I finally had enough of Reliant, I moved to another provider, only to find out we had been moved to a high rate contract. We were charged a $295 termination charge. Tried for a week and a half to talk to a manager. Was told by their imcompetent "customer support" that I could only escalate to a supervisor "coach", as they do not have managers at at Reliate Energy. I am certain I was only passed from one pathetically trained front line help desk clerk to another. No one I reached could comprehend elemental cutomer service or expand the conversation beyond segments of a rehersed script. I would expand further, but looking at the postings that I have seen on complaint sites, my experience is like most of what I am seeing. Stay away from Reliant Energy!

I needed some help with my bill. After a few months of trying to pay off a really large bill, I realized the numbers were wrong on my bill. I never received credit for a $212.00 payment I made. I called 3 times to try to resolve this situation. Reliant would never acknowledged their mistake. Now I will be contacting the BBB, the FTC, and their licensing agency. Plus, Reliant will lose a long time customer. I've been a customer since 2007, and could not get anyone to resolve this matter. I may have lost $212.00, but after I switch providers, they will lose thousands. In this economy I can't afford to lose $212.00.

I have been with them going on a decade. (Prior to moving back to Houston, I had them and in 2000 I again signed up). While, in theory "it's all the same when you flip the switch" the issue is more about WHOM you select and HOW long they have been around. I would thus prefer to be with the people who have been in my area since day 1 as opposed to some fly by night company. Yes, I pay about 6% more than a fly-by-night ma-and-pa electrical company started in someone's basement in Waxahachie, TX - but I prefer the safety net of the people who know the grid the best. Their customer service has been always above measure, and my history with them lends me the afforded measure of getting prompter responses. Just because it's cheaper somewhere else, ask yourself why.

Our service was scheduled to be terminated to today with Reliant. This was the last straw, we broke our union with Reliant before they could extinguish our account. A service manager with reliant told my spouse that our service would have to be closed and reopened with the addition of fees and other charges we had no idea were being tacked onto our bill. Our bill always stays current and paid, but due to some unforeseen, undocumented regulations that Reliant seems to be having an issue with on their side of the spectrum, we were being forced to lose power today. I was livid, my spouse was angry and we kindly and politely parted ways with reliant. Not to mention past events with them where our service was terminated for being .01 short of paying a past bill.... .01! Can you believe that? Good riddance Reliant. And for those of you who are thinking of switching to Reliant, Don't. Save yourself the headaches, poor service response times and snail-paced customer service. Not worth it!!!

I've been with Reliant for 3 years. I first signed up on a 24 month plan to keep my rate fixed. The rate at the time was less than TXU. 1 year into the contract I moved. I was forced to keep Reliant or pay a huge fee to break the contract. After the move, I got a huge bill. Apparently they didn't keep me on the contract and rate I was on before the move. They then put me on another 2 yr contract with a rate of almost 15. My electric bill was higher after the move. I went from a $150 bill in a 3 bedroom house to a $200 bill in a 1 bedroom apartment. My contract is now up and I am switching ASAP.

Make sure to look at your bill. Reliant makes mistakes in their favor on your bill. They will correct it but will tell you it takes a minimum of 21 days to correct. They charged us twice for a new meter and ended up putting our old one back in because they just forgot to turn it on. Never did get the second charge of $89.00 back for a meter they never installed. They make you call Oncor direct and Oncor tells you to call Reliant. Since we pay Reliant direct, they should handle Oncor's mistakes instead of making the customer do it.

Their customer service rep couldn't explain the difference in rates. Her supervisor informed me that I was on a different "Monthly Flex Plan" and couldn't articulate the differences, but suggested I go back to some pamphlet they supposedly sent me nine months ago explaining the plan details. Our current bill was TRIPLE what it was the previous bill! Spent hours on the phone with rude "customer service" reps. They just said "Well, you must have used 3 times as much power!" We averaged 1000 KWH per month and our record in the last 2 yrs. was 1200 KWH per month, and now they said we used 2400? Nothing changed in our apartment, and the weather was warmer, so we used less electric heat. Now they say "Well we may have underbilled you last month so we had to average it out." I asked if this was the case for sure or just a theory and they could not give me a straight answer. Completely dishonest company, they just make numbers up out of thin air and then expect you to pay them. This company has the worst customer service and all of the employees are completely incompetent. I signed up for automatic bill pay to have my bill drafted from my husband's account. Everything was fine, until I received a bill for $400 telling me that I had not paid the bill for the past 3 months and that my electricity was going to be shut off. We never knew about this, because we assumed the bill had been taken out each month. Each bill they sent me by email failed to mention that I had a past due balance. After HOURS on the phone with these people, it was concluded that one of the "customer service" employees had taken down the card expiration date wrong, causing the payments not to process. I wasn't given so much as an apology and I was expected to pay up within the month. DO NOT sign a contract with them. You will regret it!

To call customer service is an extreme bad experience as they are rude and will argue with you and when you can speak to a supervisor they treat you as bad as the cs rep. When I signed up in Feb. 2009 with a gentleman who came to our home, my adult daughter was there, I asked him as well as my daughter every which why we could ask the question "will our rate go up in the next 12 months" he always answered no, then when he called the order in and I spoke to him manager to confirm the order I also asked him if the rate will go up in the next 12 months he said no. It has gone up 2 times and this is only Aug. 2009. We called Reliant and they stated the reason the rate went up is bcause the coal rate went up, this is so contradictory to what we were told in Feb. when nothing to that effect was mentioned. this is switch & bait.

I paid last months bill which I will admit was late. I had gotten a shutoff notice. I got an extension of a few dys and paid with a check online as I always do. My bill was 563.38 and the next bill was 645.00 which I paid with a debit card. I was with Reliant for a few years relatively incident-free. Then last summer, I somehow found myself locked into a 2 year contract with them at a price of 15.5 cents/kwh (extremely high). I've called several times and gotten nowhere. Service is rude and clueless. They claim I signed up for the contract online on a day that I was on vacation in the Mayan Riviera. I couldn't have gotten online to do that even if I wanted to! Outright fraud, but I don't know what I can do. I'm afraid taking legal action would cost me more than just bearing it. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

I'm in property mgmt. and when I have to have service turned on for a short time to do repairs, maint., etc. I feel that I am overcharged for this service as compared to my residential service that I have with you.Price per kw. I give this company a lot of new business when I suggest Reliant to my new customers. I have decided to check out your competition and if I find better pricing chances are I'll be switching, not just business but my home as well.

Rates too high, very poor customer service. Took getting our state rep involved to get a billing error fixed. Took 4 months!

Reliant has no customer service, especially if you are a current reliant customer and want to get a rate quote or switch plans to get a lower rate. I called customer service and was on hold for over 30 minutes and finally gave up. I tried to get a quote on their website, but it continually refused to accept my reliant account number. I emailed them and asked for quotes on other plans. Instead of sending me quote information, they emailed back and gave me the customer service number that I had already tried before with no success. As soon a I get a better quote, Adios Reliant!

I have been with reliant energy for over 3 years and everytime I get ready to change over, they give me another plan. The last plan was average billing. The representive did not say if you get a termination letter during this time the average billing would be canceled. My bill is suppose to be around $250. I just found out that my bill is over $400. I would not recommend anybody to sign up with reliant energy.

I have just found out that by staying with Reliant month to month but unsigned that I have been gouged! A customer rep now tells me that by remaining unsigned they were allowed to charge me $0.165/kwh (in a $0.113 market by their own monthly price Flex Plan) even though I am one of their lowest cost type customers since they have no forward price risk in serving me. He kindly offered to move me to a plan that would get me true market cost based service but it is too late...I will be going to the competitiion over the abuse of their abuse discretionary pricing.

how can an individual be taken for granted when the prices of service had not changed but was a factor in a decision to get someone else to service you with energy, and now it has increased in triplicate from $ 250 to $950 per month. Why is it happening? I have lived in the same location for about nine years and never had a service bill of this sort during that period. I have had all the same appliances during the period indicated. I would liuke to kno0w Why! The exclamation that I received was that my usage tripiled, which was not so or accurate, knowing my household. I would not or will not recommend any person(s) to this agency and if possible I would put same into a newpaper articule for others to view, because it is like being stuck up without a weapon revealed.

I was talked into a 2 year contract despite my initial concerns by an eager salesman that either lied or didn't know what he was talking about. i am paying the price...literally! The contract was at 14.5 cents per KWH for 2 years. At the time it was the best deal you could get, but you had to sign up with Reliant for 2 years. I hesitated, but was told that as long as I stay with Reliant, I could switch plans if and when the rates went down. Now, the rates are down a considerable amount. When I called to switch, I was told I'd have to pay $300 to switch rates, and that I was never lied to. Also, that there was nobody he could transfer me to talk about it! Poor service if you ask me!

Because my old electric company went under last summer Reliant became my default company. I signed a 2 year contract with them out of desperation. The rate I was paying was outrageous compared to rates offered in 2009 so I tried to get them to renegotiate. They refused. Same old Reliant. That's why I left them in the first place

I was qouted 11 cents a kw. By the end of the contract it was almost 14 cents a kw. I called customer service and they gave me the run around basically saying "That's the way it is and I would have to pay the penalty for leaving early."

I called Reliant to check my contract status, and was informed that I was free to switch at any time. When I did switch providers, I got a final bill with a $100 cancellation fee! When I called, they said they had no record of my call, and they can look back for years. When I showed them my cell phone records, they said that I had called, but I didn't speak about rates or my contract. They flat out lied to me. I'm still being charged. I would not reccomend dealing with these chumps.

After Hurricane Ike, they naturally raised the price on my electricity without any kind of notice. When I switched providers after moving, I called and canceled my account. When I called to verify a week later, they hadn't canceled it, and they claimed they wouldnt be able to cut off service for another week, and I was stuck with the bill.

I'm on a fixed price, 2 year plan and am 1 year into it. By changing and paying the $295 fee, I can save 38% on a new contract with several REPs. I called NRG / Reliant and asked if there was anything they could do to keep me as a customer. I got a short "nothing we can do" and I told them I'd be changing and it would be doubtful I'd return as a customer. I changed to Gexa Energy yesterday. I had a pleasant experience signing up and will be a Gexa customer in 2 weeks. I'll save the $295 Reliant cancellation fee in 2 months.

I grew up in Houston & was an HL&P/Reliant customer for almost 10 years. When the market deregulated, I stayed with Reliant to see how things would work out. I remained a happy Reliant customer for a while. It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized that it was time to switch. Reliant's prices were so much higher than almost everyone else's in the market that I realized that I was probably losing over $200/year by sticking with them. I think they charge more & are able to maintain a high customer base because of their brand & individual customer laziness. I still check & compare prices regularly between providers & I am still amazed when I look at Reliant's prices. They remain much higher than almost anyone else. The other thing that irritates me about Reliant is that they charge customers more that live in apartments. If you go to their site, you'll see that if you enter an address with an apartment number, the prices are different than if you enter one without a number.

Reliant plans were a bit overpriced, and the only way to get a competitive rate is to sign a long term contract with a cancellation fee. For someone with good credit, I found this to be a bit cumbersome. Their ordering wasn't difficult, and they have a decent ability to manage my account online, however.
