In our second shopping guide entry of the new year, we’re taking a look at the rates for Houston electricity. The rates in Houston are, as always, a bit higher than in Dallas, and are about the the median in terms of Texaselectricity rates, so looking for deals on your electric rates is a smart way to save money.

Particularly right now, in the middle of winter when the natural gas and electric prices are as low as they will be all year, consumers should be shopping for long term fixed electricity plans. The rates are only going to get more expensive through spring and the summer months, so locking in plans at their lowest point makes the most sense. 1. Hi,

I signed up for StarTex based on the blog on 12/14/10 (using freetochoose) for a variable plan. It was advertised as 6.7 cents but when I called, they said that the rate will be 11.x cents in January 2011! I am quite surprised, is there anything I can do to have it be lower?

      1. Alisha,

Yeah, that’s probably because their promotional rate expires after one month. That’s pretty standard operating procedure for most electricity companies. I’d suggest that while the rates are low, you lock in a longer term plan, probably at the 8 or 9s through the summer heat. Of you can choose another provider that isn’t StarTex and do the same thing (fixed rate plan). Or you can also pick another electricity company (after 1 month) and pick THEIR month to month plan, and get a promotional rate.

The answer either way though is that you’re either going to have to get on the phone to StarTex or spend some time online ordering electricity from another provider.

        Hope this helps.
