Find out how you can keep your cooling bills low and help keep the grid working.

Are you ready for the scorching Texas summer? While many of us think about cooling off at the pool or cranking up the air conditioning, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has been hard at work preparing for what could be an exceptionally hot season. While ERCOT preps for various Texas power scenarios, so can you.

Planning for the summer heat starts months in advance for ERCOT, and their Monthly Outlook for Resource Adequacy (MORA) plays a crucial role in this process. However, these outlooks can be a bit confusing to the casual reader, making it hard to decipher what to expect. However, ERCOT has been diligently crafting strategies to ensure Texas has a reliable supply of power throughout the sweltering months.

ERCOT Preps for Power Demand Beyond Supply

As the summer wears on, there’s a greater chance for power demand to outstrip supply. According to the May 3 MORA covering July 2024, Texans could need more power than is available during late evening hours in July. While the chance is remote, it is still something ERCOT preps for. They strive to have as many power plants as possible producing during these critical hours.

Another major component of preparation is alerting the public. This year, ERCOT raised eyebrows by issuing its first weather-watch for the summer on May 8. Last year, ERCOT didn’t issue its first summer warnings until June. It’s a clear indication that ERCOT is taking the threat of extreme weather seriously and is determined to stay ahead of the game.

Check out more ways to help you save and keep your home cool for less as ERCOT preps for a record hot summer.

ERCOT Preps For Dry Heat

The outlook for South Texas is particularly concerning, with high heat predicted to grip the region. Now, South Texas braces for conditions that will make even the most ardent sunbathers seek shade. It’s not just the heat that’s a concern; the region also faces exceptionally dry conditions, upping the risk of wildfires and putting more strain on the ERCOT grid.

Preparing Your Home

So, what can you do to help? Start by setting your thermostat a few degrees higher and using fans to circulate air instead of relying solely on air conditioning. Unplug electronic devices when they’re not in use, and consider investing in energy efficient appliances. Small changes like these can add up to big savings on your Texas electricity bills. Plus, it will help lessen the strain on the power grid.

By working together and making smart choices, we can ensure that Texas stays cool when the heat is on. So, let’s all do our part to save energy and keep the lights on this summer.

When you’re staying cool this summer, it helps to have a great power plan. Since electricity prices rise in the summer, lock in a fixed rate pronto. You’ll stay cool, and your wallet will be a little heavier.

Who Is Ready For Summer Heat? Are you ready for the scorching Texas summer?
