But, winters in the Lone Star state can suddenly turn into severe cold. Learn what’s being done and some ways to get your home ready.

Winter is near, and Texans wonder if the power grid can handle harsh weather. The effects of Winter Storm Uri in 2021 still linger in Texans’ collective memory. Since then, grid operators and light companies have promised fixes. But is Texas electricity truly winter 2025 ready? Let’s find out.

Oncor’s Plan: A Step Forward

The Public Utility Commission (PUC) recently approved a $3 billion System Resiliency Plan from Oncor. This plan aims to update the grid and make it more reliable. Oncor’s updates include:

Replacing older items, such as poles and crossarms.

Automating underground systems to quickly address outages.

Adding ties between substations to improve flexibility.

Enhancing online security measures.

These updates will reduce power outage times and improve the grid’s ability to recover from severe weather. Oncor says these changes will start now. It’s a big step forward, but Oncor’s grid upgrades make just one piece of the puzzle. PUC is mulling over plans from other utility firms. Plus, there’s questions about what ERCOT can do.

ERCOT: Bright Eyed or Too Confident?

The state’s grid operator, ERCOT, recently shared its winter weather update. CEO Pablo Vegas says the grid is better prepared than ever. He cites over 10,000 MW of new power generation added since last year. ERCOT has also done nearly 3,000 inspections to ensure power plants meet weatherization standards.

But critics say ERCOT may be overestimating its readiness. So, is ERCOT out over its skis? Some argue that ERCOT doesn’t fully account for extreme winter demand or the state of natural gas infrastructure. During Uri, frozen natural gas supply lines led to mass outages. But has enough been done to prevent this from repeating?

ERCOT warns of a greater than average chance of extreme cold this winter. While ERCOT predicts a warm, dry winter overall, a polar vortex breakout remains possible. With demand for power higher than ever, questions remain about the grid’s ability to hold up against extreme cold.

Make Your Home Winter 2025 Ready

While Texas works to improve its grid, homeowners can take steps to get winter 2025 ready. Simple upgrades can protect against cold and lower energy bills year-round:

Seal air leaks: Use weather stripping or caulk around doors and windows. This keeps the cold air out and the warm air in.

Add insulation: Focus on attics, walls, and floors to keep heat inside. These key areas give you the most bang for your buck.

Upgrade heating systems: Newer models use less power and keep homes warmer. Products with the Energy Star label use the least energy.

These changes not only protect during winter but also reduce cooling costs in the summer. And that makes for savings all year!

Final Thoughts

Texas has made progress since 2021, but gaps remain. Oncor’s actions and ERCOT’s reviews are positive steps. Yet, natural gas reliability and grid demand pose challenges. Texans can play their part by preparing their homes for whatever winter brings. Plus, you can also shop for a cheaper power plan at http://www.texaselectricityratings.com/electric-rates.
