Data centers, factories, and other large projects are asking to connect to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaselectricityratings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas power<\/a> grid. Some of these sites could use as much power as a small city. So, how does Texas decide if these large loads are ready to join the grid? The Batch Zero audit is part of the answer. It gives ERCOT a closer look at large power users before they move ahead with their grid plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data centers are the main focus. But they are not the only large loads in the queue. The review also looks at how much power a project needs, what kind of site it is, and what it could mean for the power grid and local water supplies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-batch-zero-process\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Batch Zero Process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ERCOT created Batch Zero as its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/energy-environment\/2026\/06\/02\/553505\/ercot-votes-to-streamline-process-for-data-centers-looking-to-join-the-power-grid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new process for approving large power users<\/a>. The goal is to study these projects as a group instead of looking at each one on its own. ERCOT was tracking more than 438,000 megawatts of large-load requests by mid-2026. Nearly 90% of those requests came from data centers. Large loads in this process generally need at least 75 megawatts of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before a project can move ahead, it must give ERCOT key details about its plans. That includes how much power it expects to use and when it expects to need it. The audit adds another layer of review for data centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-does-a-large-load-have-to-show\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does a Large Load Have to Show?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large load must show ERCOT that its plans are real and that it can support the impact it will have on the grid. That means providing clear information about its power needs and other parts of the project. Texans don\u2019t want these projects to lead to higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaselectricityratings.com\/resources\/understanding-your-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric bills<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all large loads use power in the same way. A factory may use power for motors, pumps, furnaces, and other equipment. A data center may need a large amount of power all day and all night to run computers and cooling systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water is also part of the review for data centers. Gov. Abbott directed the<a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-directs-twdb-to-penalize-data-center-reporting-failures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> Texas Water Development Board<\/a> to make data centers follow state water-use reporting rules. He also told the agency to use its legal powers against those that fail to report their water use.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters because some data centers use large amounts of water to cool their computer equipment. The state\u2019s water surveys help officials plan for future water needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-size-of-the-data-center-boom\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Size of the Data Center Boom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbers show why state officials are taking a closer look. ERCOT has more than 438,000 megawatts of large-load requests, and nearly 90% are tied to data centers. Those numbers are for proposed demand, not power that data centers are using today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money involved is also huge. A proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/constructionreviewonline.com\/inside-the-reported-22-3b-texas-ai-power-deal-driving-a-market-surge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">South Korean investment<\/a> in a South Texas power project is valued at $22.3 billion. The project is tied to the growing need for power from artificial intelligence and other large computer projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Texans, the Batch Zero audit is about more than data centers. It is about how the state will handle a huge increase in demand for power and water while making sure new projects can support the costs and needs they create.
