Want to exercise your Power to Choose but feel bombarded with too many options?

Tired of decrypting EFLs?
Sick of seeing all these price-gamey plans?
Don't want to pay an agency $10 a month to shop for you once a year?

Welcome to the future!

By answering a few simple questions we can narrow the results waaay down for you. Gone are the days of picking the "cheapest" plan and hoping you don't get locked into a contract you hate.

Which of the following is most important to you?
Everyone has different needs. No surprises means you will pay a fixed rate with little-to-no base charges. The best rate should be a plan with a good rate at all applicable usage levels. A good company would be one that we've given around 4 to 5 stars. Low deposit plans are either prepaid, no contract, or are offered by a company with less stringent credit criteria.

What is your ideal contract term length?
This will remove any plans that don't meet your criteria. No contract plans generally don't have deposits, but your rate can change every month. On the plus side, you can switch providers at any time without having to pay an early cancellation fee. In general, longer term plans will have lower rates than shorter term plans, but usually have higher cancellation fees as well.

Do you ever use less than 1,000 kWh in a month?
Most plans have base charges or minimum usage fees charged by the electric company. These fees can cause your average rate to be higher when you use less than 1,000 kWh. If your home is less than 1500 sq. ft. you will probably use less than 1,000 at least one month a year.

Do you ever use more than 2,000 kWh in a month?
Some plans have bill credits that only apply if you use less than 2,000 kWh in a cycle. This can make their 2,000 kwh rate look nice, but what you don't see is the 2,001 kwh rate. If your home has 4+ bedrooms or you have a pool you will probably use over 2000 kwh at least once a year.
