Texas Electricity Ratings Scholarship Contest
Official Rules & Regulations
Texas Electricity Ratings, LLC. ("TER") is continuously looking for ways to give back to the community and empower future generations to achieve their dreams of advanced education. To do so, the "Energy For Life" Scholarship Contest was created to award a qulified student a scholarship of $1,000. Each applicant must submit the required application online, which requires a short essay of up to 500 words.
2. Eligibility and Application Requirements
Employees of Electricity Ratings, LLC and its respective parents, divisions, affiliates, subsidiaries, promotional or marketing agencies, and their immediate family members (parent, child, sibling and spouse) and persons living in the same households of each such employee (whether related or not) are not eligible.
- Applicants must be planning to enroll or currently enrolled in an accredited United States college or University during the 2017-2018 academic year.
- Must be a current high school senior or college student
- Submit a complete on line application by August 31st, 2018
- Write a 500-word essay responding to:
Texas Electricity Ratings considers itself to be more than just a company that helps consumers and businesses find the best electricity companies providing the best energy plans and the best rates.
Beyond providing helpful information on plans and rates, we also provide reviews of all energy providers so that new and existing customers can make informed decisions when looking to purchase a traditional electricity plan, a No Deposit or No Credit Check electricity plan, a Green Energy plan, a Charitable Giving plan, or a Free Smart Thermostat plan.
Regardless of plan type, it is in everyone's best interest that we all work to use energy in our homes and businesses as efficiently as we can.
Texas Electricity Ratings wants to know:
"What do you plan to do to distinguish yourself in your college career and in your life after graduation?"
Terms and Conditions:
Applicants represent and warrant that their submission is the original work of such entrant, is accurate, and has not been plagiarized.
Applicants further represent and warrant that their submission does not contain any defamatory, obscene or otherwise unlawful matter or depict anyone engaged in any illegal, immoral or lewd act, any violent or pornographic material or contain any other inappropriate content (as determined by Texas Electricity Ratings in its sole and absolute discretion).
All entry materials become the property of Energy Ratings, LLC, and will not be acknowledged or returned.
Only those application forms that are fully completed, with required profile documents attached, electronically signed and received before the deadline will be considered. Applications must be submitted electronically through the application form. Emailed or mailed applications will not be considered for entry and will be destroyed upon receiving them.
These requirements, terms and conditions that relate to this Texas Electricity Ratings Scholarship Contest are referred to as the "Official Rules & Regulations".
3. Application Process

Application form must be submitted by Friday, August 31st 2018 at 11:59 pm ET. Mail in entry forms and other documentation will be destroyed and will not be accepted.

4. Selection Process
Our Scholarship Committee is comprised of at least 5 volunteer members. Each member will receive applications soon after the application deadline to start application review process.
Criteria for Selection
Judges will review the entries based on the following criteria: Judging of the essay will be based upon the applicant's community involvement, future career goals, hobbies, interests, personal strengths and leadership qualities.
The entry with highest overall score will be declared the potential winner (in the event of a tie, the entry with the higher score in the essay will prevail). The Scholarship Committee's decisions are final and binding.
Selection for the "Energy For Life" Scholarship will be a two-stage process consisting of application review and calibration process.
- a) Application Review
- a.1. Each committee member will receive an equal number of applications to review.
- a.2. Successful candidates will be selected on the basis of community involvement, future career goals, hobbies, interests, personal strengths and leadership qualities.
- b) Calibration Process
- b.1. Each committee member must select three (3) finalists from the applications reviewed.
- b.2. A calibration meeting will be held.
- b.3. During the meeting, each committee member will present why his/her finalists should be the recipient of the scholarship.
- b.4. Committee members will cast their vote in selecting three (3) finalists . The winner will then be notified.
All finalists will be notified of their status by October 1, 2017.
We will maintain a list of alternate candidates in case winners decline the scholarship.
One (1) winner will be selected. The winner will receive a check for $1,000 for academic use. Winners may be required to complete an affidavit of eligibility, a liability and publicity release (except where prohibited by law) which must be returned within ten (10) days of date of personal delivery or date of postmark. Failure to sign and return the affidavit or release within ten (10) days, or to comply with any term or condition of these Official Rules & Regulations, may result in a winner's disqualification, the forfeiture of his or her interest in the prize, and the award of the prize to a substitute winner.
Notification of Prize:
The winning students will receive a phone call, email, or letter announcing the official decision. The school listed on the application will also receive notification of the scholarship winners. Texas Electricity Ratings will confirm the schools the scholarship check should be made out to with the winning students prior to mailing.
Sponsor: The "Texas Electricity Ratings Scholarship" Contest is sponsored by Electricity Ratings, LLC. ("Award Sponsor"). The decisions of the Award Sponsors regarding the selection of winners and all other aspects of the Contest shall be final and binding in all respects.
6. Indemnification and Limitation of Liability
By entering this Contest, Applicants shall indemnify, defend and hold harmless Electricity Ratings, LLC, and its parent, its affiliates, subsidiaries, directors, officers, governors, representatives, dealers, advertising and promotion agencies, judging organizations, employees, agents and partners, (herein, the “Released Parties”) from and against any and all liability, damages or causes of action (however named or described) with respect to or arising out of either: (i) Applicant’s participation in the Contest; or (ii) the receipt or use of the Prize awarded herein; or (iii) the administration of the Contest and distribution of the Prize awarded herein; and (iv) any and all claims, judgments, damages, liabilities, penalties and fines of any kind, stemming from participation in this Contest.
Applicants hereby release, waive and discharge any and all claims of damage, loss or causes of action (including, negligence), including (but not limited to) death, personal injury or loss or damage to property, which the Applicant or any of the Applicant’s representatives, heirs, next of kin or assignees ("Applicant’s Representatives") may have or which may hereinafter accrue to the entrant or Applicant’s Representatives against the Released Parties as a result of the Applicant's participation in the Contest or the receipt or use of the Prize(s) awarded herein.
To be eligible to be declared a winner, the selected Applicant must sign Electricity Ratings, LLC's Standard Declaration and Release form (the “Release”), confirming his/her eligibility and compliance with the Contest Rules & Regulations and releasing the Released Parties from any and all liability arising from: (a) the Award or my participation in the Award; (b) my participation in any Award-related activity, (c) any Award-related prize; (d) any travel to or from any prize or Award-related activity; or (e) the use of my Likeness or the exercise of the rights granted therein.
The winners of the Contest will not receive any additional prizes or compensation. In no event will Texas Electricity Ratings be responsible for awarding more than the number of prizes specified in these Official Rules & Regulations. Texas Electricity Ratings, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to delay, extend, terminate, modify or withdraw this Contest, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice for any reason including, but not limited to, tampering or other causes beyond Texas Electricity Ratings’s control which affect, in the opinion of Texas Electricity Ratings, the administration, security, fairness or proper play or conduct of the Contest.
The Released Parties are not responsible for tampering or human errors, including gross negligence, affecting the proper administration and conduct of this Contest; nor is responsibility assumed for printing or typographical errors in any Contest-related materials; for lost, stolen, late, misdirected, damaged, incomplete, illegible, or postage-due mail, or for transactions that are lost or fail to enter the processing system, are processed, reported, or transmitted late, or are lost for any reason computer, telephone, paper, or any other malfunction, including human error. Proof of submission does not constitute proof of receipt of entry.
Internet: If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Contest Sponsor, or its affiliates, that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, Sponsor, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to cancel, terminate, delay, extend, modify, or suspend the Contest and to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process. Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications-line failure, theft or destruction, or unauthorized access to or alteration of entries. Sponsor is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment or software, or for failure of any automatic entry to be received by Sponsor on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Website, or any combination thereof - including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in this Contest.
In the event this Contest is cancelled or terminated, pursuant to these terms and conditions, Texas Electricity Ratings, in its sole discretion, may, at its sole discretion, elect to select a winner(s) from among all eligible entries received up to the date of discontinuance for any or all of the prizes offered herein.
General Restrictions: The use of automated software, computer programs, sweepstake/contest services, automated entry software, or facsimiles will not be accepted to register or to enter this Contest and is prohibited. Any individual who uses or attempts to use such methods to register or to enter will be disqualified. Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any Applicant from this Contest or any other promotion conducted now or in the future by Sponsor or any of its affiliates if she/he tampers with the entry process or if her/his fraud or misconduct affects the integrity of this Contest. Any attempt by an entrant to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest is in violation of criminal and civil laws.
ANY ATTEMPT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE THE WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS CONTEST MAY BE IN VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK REMEDIES AND DAMAGES (INCLUDING ATTORNEYS’ FEES) TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.
This contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Issues concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules & Regulations shall be governed by the laws of the state of Texas, without regard to any principles of conflict of laws.
All disputes arising out of or connected with this contest will be resolved individually, and without resort to class action, exclusively by a state or federal court located in Harris County, Houston, Texas.
Should there be a conflict between the laws of the state of Texas and any other laws, the conflict will be resolved in favor of the laws of the state of Texas. To the extent permitted by applicable law, all judgments or awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket damages (excluding attorneys’ fees) associated with participation in this contest and shall not include any indirect, punitive, incidental and/or consequential damages.mai
8. Force Majure
The failure of Sponsor to comply with any provision of these Official Rules & Regulations due to an act of God, hurricane, war, fire, riot, earthquake, terrorism, act of public enemies, actions of governmental authorities outside of the control of the Sponsor and Administrator (excepting compliance with applicable codes and regulations) or other force majeure event will not be considered a breach of these Official Rules & Regulations.
