How to Predict Your Home’s Kilowatt Usage

Finding the cheapest energy rates in Texas isn’t always easy. There are a lot of plans out there. And if you pick one that isn’t suited to your home, you could end up paying WAY more than you should for electricity. To better understand what types of energy plans you should look for in Dallas, you need to know how many kilowatts used in the average size home.

What is the Average Size Home?

The average home size has been growing for decades. In the early 1990s, 2,000 sq ft homes were the average size. In 2013, the average size of a single-family home being built was 2,600 sq. ft. But that’s a national average. What about Dallas? Well, the average size for a home in the Oncor service area built between 2010 – 2016 was 2,613 sq. ft. So, just slightly above average. Everything’s bigger in Texas, after all.

While “modern” homes tend to be bigger, there are still a lot of older, smaller homes in use. So, it’s no surprise to find many Texans living in homes that are 2,000 sq ft or greater that are considered average-sized.

How Many Kilowatt Does the Average Texas Home Use?

Home Professionals lay this out clearly stating that “the average 2,000 sq. ft. U.S. home uses around 1,000 kWh of energy per month or about 32 kWh per day.” But again, it’s not so clear cut.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration notes that the average homeowner used about 914 kWh per month in energy.

Since the average-sized home is 2,000 sq ft or greater, the average Texas home uses around 1,176 kWh per month and has an average monthly energy bill of about $131.63 (assuming a rate of 11.20 cents per kWh).

But Texans use well above the national average for energy during the summer, and not that much during winter. This means, depending on  insulation, that while you’ll see fewer kilowatts used in your home during the winter, summer usage easily tips over the  1000 kWh average from June until the end of September.

What Does This Mean For You When Shopping Energy Providers?

Ready to switch to a cheaper electricity plan in Dallas? Remember, you have the power to choose in Texas. But, with so many providers, you have a lot of options. And that can get confusing. The first step to picking the best energy provider in Texas is to figure out how much energy in kilowatts that you use in your home. Averages are great, but they don’t always paint a clear picture.

Habits and the energy efficiency of your home goes a long way. If you’re cautious about energy use and your home is insulated against the elements, then you’ll most likely have lower energy bills than other less cautious or less efficient homes.

One easy way to get an estimate of your monthly energy use is to ask for historical readings. This will help you get a better idea of what your kilowatts usage will be like for your home. You can also make your Texas home more energy-efficient, lowering your monthly Dallas electricity bills
