How TruBill™ Helps You Shop
What is TruBill™?
TruBill™ is our proprietary tool to estimate your average bill based on typical energy usage patterns which vary through the year.
For example, in March in Texas, you typically won't use much electricity because the weather is pleasant. But in July and August, you'll be using a lot more electricity. This means that the average rate' you pay could vary dramatically from the advertised 'average rate', depending on how much energy you used in a particular month.
How do I use TruBill™?
In Texas, a normal household uses on average about 1400 kWh per month. Apartment dwellers might use 750-1000 kWh each month, while those with large homes, pools, hot tubs or electric cars might use 2500-3000 kWh per month.
Select your average monthly usage by clicking the Plan Details for the selected plan. In the popup, scroll down to the TruBill™ section to view the table showing monthly usage and estimated costs.
Each time you change the usage we calculate how that would vary through the year, then we calculate what your electricity bill would be in that month, given the particulars of the electricity plan you are looking at, such as monthly recurring charges, energy charges, delivery charges, bill credits, etc. The new estimate is then updated and displayed in your browser.
Why does TruBill™ matter?
Simply this: Because a plan that advertises a rate of 10 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh of electricity usage, could have a significantly higher rate at 980 kWh, depending on bill credits, monthly recurring charges, tiered energy charges, etc.
By modeling how your usage varies through the year and calculating the actual bill based on that variable energy usage, TruBill™ gives you a much more realistic method to compare electricity plans.
