Energy Charges Matter in Texas

Learn why energy charges matter most when you shop and compare electricity plans in Texas.
Knowing your electric usage can matter a lot when you compare the energy charges on bill credit plans.

Cheap electricity rates can look like a great deal. But what happens when your home uses less power than usual? In fact, many low-priced 12-month plans use a $125 credit tied to monthly power use. For a well-insulated Houston home, a mild month can turn that discount into a costly surprise. Some cheap-looking plans cost far more when you miss a bill credit. That is why energy charges matter when you shop for a plan. Before choosing an electric provider, check how its rate changes with your usage.

What Does the Energy Charge Cover?

The energy charge is what a provider bills for each kWh you use. Think of your electricity bill like an Amazon order. The energy charge is the price you pay for the goods. The utility’s delivery charges are like the shipping fee.

At 12.3¢ per kWh, 950 kWh costs $116.85 before delivery fees and other charges. However, a $125 usage credit can change the final bill far more than saving 50 kWh.

This is why the advertised rate at 1,000 kWh does not tell the whole story. It may already include a credit you won’t get every month.

Three Houston Plans Compared

BKV Energy offers Pepper Tree 12. Companion Energy offers Companion Savings + Benefits 12. Both plans offer a $125 usage credit. For this comparison, we assume each credit starts at 1,000 kWh.

At 950 kWh, BKV‘s estimated bill is $186.47. At 1,000 kWh, it falls to $71.03. Companion‘s bill drops from $187.14 to $71.73 over the same range. Both examples include energy charges, delivery fees, and the credit when it applies.

Meanwhile, Constellation’s 12 Month (No Min Usage Fee) works differently. Its estimated bill is $133.08 at 950 kWh and $139.83 at 1,000 kWh. There is no $125 credit to lose. As a result, using less power lowers the bill.

Here’s the catch. With these bill credit plans, using 950 kWh instead of 1,000 kWh can actually cost you more than $115 extra. That’s because the $125 credit rewards higher monthly power use, even when using less electricity would normally save you money.

Find the Right Fit for Your Home

A bill credit plan may work well when you reliably use at least 1,000 kWh. But a mild spring or fall month can change the math. Even a home that usually uses more may slip below the mark.

Before you sign up, check the electricity facts label for energy charges, usage credits, and fees. TER’s Safe-Rate™ analysis helps show how prices shift as usage changes. TruBill™ also estimates costs across a full year, rather than at just one usage level.

That is why energy charges matter more than a flashy rate alone. Compare Texas electricity plans at https://www.texaselectricityratings.com/electric-rates and choose one that fits your real power use.
