Green Mountain is the longest serving renewable energy retailer in the country. The company started in Vermont in 1997 with the mission to change the way power is made. Based in Austin since 2000, the company developed into a green power pioneer and was the first retailer to offer alternative energy in the state. Green Mountain began offering 100% renewable energy plans to Texas residential consumers and businesses in 2002.
After joining Houston's NRG Energy in 2010, Green Mountain grew to provide 100% renewable energy to customers in 11 states. All told since 1997, Green Mountain customers have avoided adding 94 billion pounds of CO2 to the atmosphere. As a green energy leader, Green Mountain energy seeks to advance sustainable communities through nonprofit projects that promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, resource conservation, and environmental stewardship.

Green Mountain Energy has been actively giving back to the communities it serves for over 20 years. The Green Mountain Energy Sun Club supports nonprofit projects that promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, resource conservation, and environmental stewardship. The Sun Club gives donations and grants that enhance its sustainability goals as well as nature-based education and improving health.
Recipients have included the Houston Community ToolBank, Recipe for Success, the Trust for Public Land (Dallas), Plant it Forward Farms, and the Betty and Jacob Friedman Holistic Garden and Sustainable Agriculture Project at Rice University.
