About McKinney Texas
The McKinney History
The land where the city currently stands was owned by William Davis, who acquired the 3,000 acres in 1849. He started by donating 120 acres for the development of a town. After ten years, McKinney was incorporated, and the town acquired a commission type of government in 1913. McKinney served as the principal commercial center of its county for the first 125 years. The purpose of the county seat was to provide farmers with cotton mills, flour, banks, cottonseed oil mill, newspapers, churches, schools, and cotton gin, to mention a few. It was in 1880 that the government gave the residents access to an opera house.
The town experienced fast economic development stages, and the businesses came to include a vast dairy, a textile mill, a garment manufacturing company, and an ice company. Due to the advancements, there was a fast population growth rate since the population grew from 35 citizens to 4,714 citizens as of 1912. As of 1953, McKinney had a total population of more than 10,000 citizens and 355 businesses. The town was allowed to continue serving as an agribusiness center to its county until the late 1960s. Until 1970, McKinney was a big place, but Plano surpassed it since the city had now started experiencing moderate population growth, according to the 1970 census. There were 15,193 citizens in the city, while in 1990, the city's total population was 21,283.
