About First Choice Power Electricity Service

About First Choice Power
Texas-New Mexico Power Company (TNMP) launched First Choice Power in 2000 to be its unregulated energy retailer in Texas. As a TDSP, TNMP was required to sell off its last generator plant when deregulation finally took effect in Texas in 2002. At that point, First Choice Power went into business as an affiliate retailer for TNMP. The REP was very successful, growing to become the state's fourth largest retail electricity provider by 2005.
In 2011, its parent company chose to leave the competitive energy market and sold First Choice Power to Direct Energy. Though Direct Energy was the largest energy retailer in North America, First Choice Power remained focused entirely on Texas customers. In 2021, NRG acquired Direct Energy and its other subsidiaries including First Choice Power. In October, NRG announced it was retiring First Choice Power and was moving existing customers to other NRG brands.
