About First Choice Power Electricity Service

First Choice Power was the retail electricity arm of Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP), one of the five Transmission & Distribution Service Providers in the state of Texas. In 2001, they spun off from TNMP to focus solely on retail electricity service. In 2011 they were purchased by Direct Energy.

Direct Energy is the largest competitive retailer of energy and related services in North America. With operations across Canada, Texas and the north-eastern United States, Direct Energy delivers $8 billion of energy and related services to over five million residential and commercial customers. They operate generation assets, as well as retail electricity services in multiple states across the US.

Direct Energy is a member of Centrica, group of companies provides energy and other services with more than 32 million customer relationships.

About First Choice Power

Texas-New Mexico Power Company (TNMP) launched First Choice Power in 2000 to be its unregulated energy retailer in Texas. As a TDSP, TNMP was required to sell off its last generator plant when deregulation finally took effect in Texas in 2002. At that point, First Choice Power went into business as an affiliate retailer for TNMP. The REP was very successful, growing to become the state's fourth largest retail electricity provider by 2005.

In 2011, its parent company chose to leave the competitive energy market and sold First Choice Power to Direct Energy. Though Direct Energy was the largest energy retailer in North America, First Choice Power remained focused entirely on Texas customers. In 2021, NRG acquired Direct Energy and its other subsidiaries including First Choice Power. In October, NRG announced it was retiring First Choice Power and was moving existing customers to other NRG brands.

Falling Leaves, Falling Electric Prices

Shop and compare falling electric prices for your Houston home now. Fall shoulder pricing is here but it won't last long!
Savvy electricity customers know that timing is everything. Fall's falling electric prices means you snag plans like these with low monthly bills.

Can You Take Advantage Of Falling Electric Prices?

Knowing when to buy something can help you save money. You can get a better deal on a new car in the last few days of the month. Winter coats go on sale in the spring. Fall and spring have the best Texas electricity prices because demand is lower. Energy industry insiders call these periods shoulder months. In shoulder months, Texans aren’t cranking down their air conditioning for the summer heat or firing up their furnaces for the cold winter temperatures. When represented on a line graph over the course of a year, the spring and fall appear like shoulders to the price peaks in winter and summer. In October, falling leaves signal falling electric prices. When you shop Texas electricity plans then, you can set yourself up for year round savings.

Lower Average Bills This Month

One of the best ways to compare plans is to look at their estimated average monthly bills. Last month’s plan with the lowest rate was the currently unavailable You Got This 18 plan from First Choice Power at 10.0 cents. At $116 per month, this 18-month plan was the best option for most customers with moderate usage. This month, the Easy Saver 12 plan from 4Change Energy beats that rate by a whole cent (9.0 cents) with an average estimated bill of $109. This tiered rate plan charges customers $90 for any usage between 1 and 1,000 kWh. After that, customers pay 16.5 cents for each additional kWh. This plan is best for users who usually consume just a little less than 1,000 kWh per month. The plan comes with an early termination fee of $20 per month remaining in the contract. That means it gets cheaper to switch the longer you stay in the contract.

More Shoulder Month Value

The next best plan this month is the Value Plus 12 plan from Discount Power. This plan offers flat pricing which makes it a good option for customers of all usage patterns. Though the rate is higher at 11.0 cents, the average bill is $113 which still beats the best September price. There is no monthly fee but the early termination fee  of $150 with this lines up with the nominally standard price for fixed rate plans.

Timing the Texas Power Market

If you’re attempting to time the retail electricity market for the best deal, October is typically one of your best shots. That said, you can never know for sure when falling electric prices will bottom out. Best Fixed Rate 12 Month Electricity

Fixed rate 12 month electricity plans offer Texas consumers a predictable and stable way to stay on top of their monthly bills.
Tiered rates and bill credits offer you crazy-cheap rates as long as you jump through all their hoops. Want predictable monthly electric bills? Get a fixed rate 12 month plan so you can stay on top of your monthly bills with less worry.

Which Plans Have The Best Fixed Rate 12 Month Electricity?

Fixed rate electricity plans have a distinct advantage over other plans. While complicated pricing structures give you a chance to game the system, you know you’ll pay for what you use with fixed rate electricity plans. Sure, bill credits, tiered rates, free nights, and free weekend plans help some people save money. But these types of pricing profiles can also cause you to pay more than necessary. Fixed rate power is tough to beat when you want predictable bills. The plans described below are the best fixed rate 12 month electricity plans currently available.

Cheapest Fixed Rate 12 Month Electricity

The best fixed rate 12 month electricity plan is the Value Plus 12 plan from Discount Power. With no base charge from the retailer, this plan is a good option for customers of all usage patterns. Plus, the low 12 cents per kWh rate means the plan offers superior value. At 1,000 kWh of average usage, customers pay an estimated average bill of $122. You can find cheaper plans with longer terms. But if you want a 12 month plan, this one should be on your short list of plans to consider.

12 Month Plans From Spark Energy

Spark Energy offers two competitively priced 12 month plans. The Spark Green Secure 12 plan also comes with a 12 cents per kWh rate. At 1000 kWh of usage, the estimated average bill is around $123 which positions it well against the Value Plus 12 plan. The key distinguishing feature between the two plans is a $8.99 minimum usage charge when a customer does not consume 1,000 kWh in a billing cycle. As a result, this plan is less favorable for low usage customers. The minimum usage charge is also part of the pricing structure for the Prepare and Protect 12 plan which also features a 12 cents per kWh rate and has an estimated average bill of $125.

Lower Bills At Longer Contract Terms

If you aren’t committed to a 12 month plan, you can find better deals. For example, the You Got This 18 plan from First Choice Power boasts a $116 estimated average bill. It also offers low 10 cents per kWh fixed rate pricing, so it measures up favorably against the cheapest 12 month plans. The one drawback here is a $4.95 monthly base charge which can make it less favorable for Texas customers with very below average electricity consumption
