Frequently Asked Questions About Texas Electricity Companies

The REP is the 'electric company' you interact with. These retailers provide enrollment, billing, and customer service functions to electricity consumers.

They purchase electricity on the wholesale market and sell it to commercial and residential users.

When a REP is acquired, one of three things occurs.

  1. The new brand becomes one of a library of brands within the acquiring company. In this case the near-term customer experience remains the same.
  2. The customers are transferred to a new REP. The rate and contract should remain the same, while the account, billing, and customer service changes.
  3. Customers fall to the Provider of Last Resort POLR. In this case the REP goes out of business with customers who need electricity, and in accordance with ERCOT rules they are assigned to a new REP.

Typically contracts stay in place for the remaining term, after which they are free to change electricity companies..

For a variety of reasons. Usually a company is bought by another, and the aquiring company merges the new customers with their existing customer base. Or an energy company who owns multiple brands may decide to reduce their number of brands and combine customer bases.
