About Wichita Falls Texas
History of Wichita Falls
The Choctaw Native Americans inhabited the area in the early 1800s. These people moved from Mississippi after the Americans negotiated to move them after the Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty. This treaty was signed in 1830-1831, and as of 1841, there was a large settlement of Indian people, thus making up the present Wichita Falls. Most American settlers arrived in the region in the 1860s, and their main activity was cattle ranching. However, it was not until September 27, 1876, that the city was named Wichita Falls since the river Wichita runs through the region. In 1876, a waterfall was in the river's course, thus the name.
During its naming in 1876, the process of selling lots was also held at a point now called the corner of Seventh and Ohio Streets. These places are considered the city's birthplace. In 1882 is when the Denver City and Forth Worth Railway entered Wichita Falls. The city developed towards the western side because the train's depot was strategically located towards the northwest side of the FW&DC and Seventh Street. The area is currently known as the Depot Square Historic District, declared a historic landmark in Texas.

Through the Wichita Falls Alliance of Arts and Culture, natives receive support in matters concerning arts, among other essential elements that preserve the local heritage.
