Good company-needs a little tweaking
I have done a review on startex before and continue to be a current customer. The only thing they need to change is when you want to renew on the 3 month plan that power to choose has for startex, they need to have that available on their website instead of having to call customer service and get a supervisor to override it so you can renew as a current customer. I was told in the past by e-mail that startex treats current and new customers the same so that everyone can get the same rate. How about making it easier for that to happen. I am pleased with them as my electric provider and their customer service is very good. Also they are owned by Exelon now.

Star Tex Power - The Best Electricity Provider
Startex power has been the best electricity provider I ever had so far. The order experience was so quick and fuss free thus, I was stress free. The plan I chose was so energy/cost efficient that I have no complaints with the billing. For the first time, I feel that I am being billed accurately and honestly. I am more than satisfied with Star Tex Power. Two thumbs up! Excellent!

Renewing with Star Tex
My contract with Star Tex was about to expire, so I spent much time researching various plans and rates offered by providers in our area. I wanted to see if I could secure a better rate with a company that also scored well on customer satisfaction. After an exhausting search, I called Star Tex to clarify information on their website; all my questions were answered thoroughly in a patient and easy-to-understand manner by customer service agent Ashley. Based on past personal experience, as well as current information, I have chosen to renew with Star Tex.

Excellent Customer Service
The day after I posted a review on this web site, a StarTex representative contacted me about my review. She lowered the minimum usage fee to $4.99 and the minimum kWh threshold to 500. She renegotiated my contract to my full satisfaction, and now I'm a very happy customer. I wish I had been able to amend my earlier review, but instead, I just posted a new one here.I'm very grateful to have had this web site to research companies. With it, I was able to negotiate a new contract with my preferred energy provider. Thank you!

Irritated by renewal by phone just to be "sold" things
When I bought my home in 2006, I was one of their first customers ever. I've stayed with them since then and always automatically renewed via online. I have automated pay and so never have I had to call anyone to renew my service each year (or 24 months). Suddenly out of nowhere I am told that I have to call to get the lowest rate. I called, which was irritating on its own since this has never happened in 10 years. I was given a lower rate, which was good and felt like the company was just trying to find out who were their most loyal customers. Then the renewal call turned into a sales push to get me to change my A/C guy! WHAT? I finally had to tell the rep to just stop it. I was not changing my A/C guy! Then, I had to answer all these approval questions. So they tried to sell me before they registered me. Not good. Then I had to be told about a referral code and all these benefits to getting people to switch to them. THEN, the rep wanted me have the referrals call him directly. At that time, my dog began barking because an AT&T guy came to my door so I was able to get off the phone. Entire time 15 minutes! I don't appreciate all that. I felt I was being baited, pressured, switched and victim of a sales call.

Contract Renewal
StarTex has always been a good company in the four years that I have been with them. When it came time to renew my contract, customer service tried to work with me on my rates and could only offer me a nine months contract ( I was hoping for six months) with a slightly higher rate then previously. I took it because I never had any problems with them and they have never had any hidden fees. The only thing that I have found disappointing is that within 4 days of my contract renewal, rates dropped below where I was previously. Especially, because when I originally contacted StarTex about possibly keeping my previous rates for renewal, it couldn't be done and now the rates are lower. I may consider switching companies in the future if it means lower rates and a better monthly contract.

Hate to switch
I was on a rate plan until this July and was very happy. I did not enter another because I knew I would be buying a home and was worried about breaking a contract. Even though I have been going month to month my bill has been good. Unfortunately I am forced to shop for another company because the new rate plans are very high. I have not had any issues, I love that I can go online and pay, and my bills were decent. They no longer offer any rate plans that are priced decent. I did try to call customer service to see if I could get a lower rate as a loyal customer but no luck.....so I will shop and read reviews until I find another company

No issues, Good Service
All customers should pay attention to their contract. Like others, we forgot when ours ran out and our rate sky rocketed. This was our fault, though, but they fixed it and applied the new rate while also reimbursing the high rate. All you have to do is talk to someone like a person, not your enemy. I cannot give them a bad review.

It's Time To Move On
I've been a Star Tex customer for 3 years, and I would have to say had a good experience with them up until now. After the first year, they notified me that my contract was up for renewal. I requested them to renew at a certain rate, which would have been comparable to one of their competitors. They agreed, and all was well. I was in for a surprise when that contract expired. No notice, and just a surprise bill with the rate jacked up 3 cents KWH. I sent Star Tex an email asking if they would lock in a lower rate, letting them know that if they did I would refer a customer to them. I received a big N-O, and that was the end of that. I then requested a letter of credit from them, and haven't heard anything back. Needless to say, it's time to switch, because my monthly electricity bill is way too high, and they are simply no longer competitive.

Ok provider
Have not had major issues, prices were ok but made mistake of accepting 3 year plan. Bad timing on my part I guess since rate at time I initiated plan was 13.6/kwh. Nothing I could with a $300+ cancellation fee once rates dropped significantly. Not worth cancelling and changing. Will look at other companies to try to improve rate for a while and make up some of what I have lost with this higher rate I got stuck with. Not afraid to switch and may even consider staying if rate is reasonalbe on month to month but it doesn't look like they are beating others or even close even on 3 or 6 month plans Startex appears too high compared to others. Customer service ok and have not had problems on a few occasions when late over the last 2 years.

Keep track of your contract dates
I chose StarTex Power from several providers in the area. Their rates seem competitive and my service has been great. However, after my initial 6 month contract expired, StarTex never bothered to notify me or ask me to renew. They simply let my contract expire, started charging me a higher, non-contract rate. It's a shady practice and I feel like they've risked losing me as a customer for the $25 they swindled from me. As soon as I renewed, my rate dropped again but clearly I'll need to remember to renew early to avoid their expiration scam.

Can't handle the aggravation
Good price, good service. BUT - can't seem to make the website work consistently. Every couple of months, it suddenly doesn't recognize me as a registered account holder. Wait on hold, cust svc can't figure out why. Gotta do registration procedure all over again. Works a couple of times, then ditto. NOW had to go out of town over holiday, can't log in, getting recorded msgs bill is due, no one in office because of holiday.
Can't handle the aggravation for the few dollars saves us.

One the fence
I've been a Startex customer for several years now, Last year I willing signed up for another 12 months. I knew it wasn't the lowest rate on the market but all my hassle free experience with them I felt a couple of cents for less hassle was worth it. At least much better than a former company known by me as Second to last Choice (First Choice) but... Since being bought out by Constellation it seems this luxury will cost me more. or will it? Startex give me a reason why I should stay? Last year your company allowed a digit drop. This year I waited to see this offer and....nothing, well except much higher prices. I will be calling to see if you can offer something to keep a customer. If not I guess you will leave me no choice but to jump the fence and swim with the sharks again. Wish me luck.I got my lube and a speedo just in case.

Fine if you don't leave
Would not use again. Price to leave is $78 even when your contact is over. Got a great electricity rate so I chose this company over bigger names but when it was time to renew the offer they made was no longer competitive so I switched. Turns out an "Oncor Electric Company Surcharges Approved" showed up on my last invoice, even though I was out of contract. The price to switch electric companies varies and in my opinion, anything over $20 is way too much, especially for something automated. Exact actual price to end service is not disclosed in terms of service, only a mention that a fee may be changed. Also had some billing problems - signed up for auto-pay but didn't charge my card for some reason one month (even though they had the 4 months prior) then called to say my bill was overdue, and I had to go online and pay again. Later appologized via automated email.

Startex does not want to retain its customers
I have been a Startex customer for over 8 months (signed two, 3 month contracts and stayed on variable rates for the remaining months). I reached out to their customer service via their website chat option and was told that they couldn't offer me the same rate as advertised on Powertochoose.org because those prices were not available for renewals, even though I am out of my contract. It seems that the company is more focused on getting new customers rather than retaining their current customers. Also, their rates are on the high end compared to some of the other providers. To be fair, I have had no issues with billing and received contract expiration notices timely. I am just irked at the fact that they would rather charge their existing and on-time paying customers more than new customers. To top things off they sent me an email for referral bonuses. Why would I want to refer anyone to Startex if they won't do enough to retain me as a customer?

$350 Security Deposit is a scam on the 3 month fixed plan April 2018
Star Tex wanted a $350 Security Deposit on the 3 month fixed plan even though I have an above 800 credit score. I called and spoke with Constance. She told me that if I signed a 12 month contract, that I would get my $350 security deposit refunded at the end of 12 months if all payments were made on time. I asked her about the 3 month fixed rate plan that I was signing up for, and she told me that they would NOT return my security deposit at the end of the 3 month plan. THEY WOULD KEEP MY $350 SECURITY DEPOSIT EVEN IF I MADE MY PAYMENTS ON TIME. BAIT AND SWITCH ALL DAY LONG.

NEW CUSTOMER ONLY SCAM - PUC has been informed!
I've used multiple provider for power in Texas over the last 5 years since deregulation kicked in. I've always gone to powertochoose to get the best deal when my previous contract expires. I did this recently and have learned that StarTex is now considering anyone who has used their service within the last 36 months to not be eligible for their best NEW CUSTOMER plans. In the past, the process was that if u were not an existing customer you were considered a NEW CUSTOMER. Now StarTex has changed the rules to scam us. StarTex will publish a loss leader on powertochoose, but say you are not allowed to have that. They'll gladly sell you a plan that is more expensive so it's not that they think you are a risk. They just want to bait and switch users.I've contacted my local congressman and he has had the PUC file a complaint about this bait and switch practice. Hopefully, this will be resolved to help the little guy.
