About Killeen Texas

Killeen City History

This is an incredible city located in Bell County, TX. As history has it, Santa Fe and Colorado Railway extended its tracks via central Texas in 1881 towards the southwest part of Texas in a place called Palo Alto that has existed since 1872. This is where the railroad platted a 70-block town and named it after Killeen P. Frank was the assistant general manager of the railroad. The town developed so fast; the next year, it had a railroad depot, school, many stores, and a saloon. Naturally, this attracted several residents from the neighbouring villages. As of 1884, the town had almost 350 citizens who five general stores served, two saloons, a hotel, two gristmills, a lumber yard and two cotton gins.

With its fast growth, the town became a crucial shipping area for grain, wool, and cotton in the eastern Coryell and western Bell Counties. As of 1900, the town had a population of 780 residents. However, it was not until 1905 that the local politicians called for the construction of bridges over rivers, thus doubling the town's trade region.
