About Odessa Texas
Odessa City History
The city of Odessa was founded in 1881 to act as a water stop and a cattle shipping area along the Pacific and Texas Railway. However, it was not until 1885 that the first post office was in the city. In 1891, Odessa was announced as the county seat of Ector County after the county became organized for the first time. In 1927, Odessa was identified as an incorporated town after the discovery of oil in the County of Ector at the Connell Ranch, towards the southwest side of Odessa.
After the Penn Field opened in 1929 and the Cowden Filed in 1930, oil was the major export for the town's new inhabitants. As of 1925, Odessa had a total population of approximately 750 residents; by 1929, the number had risen to 5,000. During the entire 20 th century, the city's economy and the population grew quickly since a succession of oil booms was accompanied by contractions during the successful busts.
