How We Rate

We aggregate data from multiple sources, including our customer reviews, rates, Public Utility Commission statistics, JD Power ratings, Better Business Bureau, and surveys.

Stream Energy, founded in 2005 in Dallas, Texas, was a pioneering retail electricity and natural gas provider. It utilized a multi-level marketing approach for customer acquisition. In 2019, NRG Energy acquired Stream Energy's retail electricity and natural gas business for $300 million, marking a significant change in ownership and market position.

Stream offers competitve rates, green energy options and has comprable customer support. So if a family member or friend is asking you to sign up. . . it's worth taking a look. If you're looking to sign up as a new Stream "consultant," do you have connections, relationships and cash to offset the startup and monthly costs of the Stream Partner program?

Strem like Ambit energy is great if you are a customer - and are helping a friend who is a "consultant." They have accurate billing, solid customer service, all the modern online interface, etc. If you're a customer it's pretty seamless. Stream is problematic for new "sales consultants." The monthly fees, and economics make it hard for any but the most aggressive consultants to break even and make financial sense.

Based on our reviews, Stream Energy appears to have significant customer service issues. Common complaints include long hold times, difficulty understanding representatives, billing errors, unexpected rate increases, and problems with account management. Many customers report challenges getting issues resolved, facing disconnections despite timely payments, and dealing with hidden fees. While some customers praise Stream's competitive initial rates and online billing system, the majority express frustration with poor communication, billing disputes, and difficulties when trying to switch providers. Several reviewers warn others to avoid the company, though a minority report positive experiences with savings and service.
