How We Rate

We aggregate data from multiple sources, including our customer reviews, rates, Public Utility Commission statistics, JD Power ratings, Better Business Bureau, and surveys.

My Take: By Matt Oberle - Sept 8, 2025

TXU Energy is the single largest electricity provider in Texas, and have been selling electricity even before Texas deregulated back in 2001. As a result, there's a lot of bad reviews for TXU from customers, which isn't surprising. This is not the same story that their PUC complaints tell, as tracked by the PUC, but we're here to talk about TXU reviews. The biggest gripes from customers seem to be high plan pricing and long customer service wait times. Of course, when you have as many customers as TXU, there's also going to be more complaints.

Best TXU Energy Plans as reviewed by Texas Electricity Ratings

Simple Rate 12

Our Rating:
Plan Term: 12 Months
Plan Type: Fixed Rate

TXU's Simple Rate 12 plan is a fixed rate plan. What that means is that the kWh rates between the usage levels of 500, 1000, and 2000 are pretty close together, so there won't be any big bill fluctuations based on usage. Unfortuantely, the Energy Charge on this plan is still extremely high, 25% higher than some other's weve seen, and the rate in question doesn't seem in include transportation fees from the utility. What that adds up to is almost certainly an exremely high bill every month. The plan also has a very high monthly recurring charge of $9.95 a month, which is pretty standard for TXU. There are similar plans on the market for much, much cheaper.
thumb_upPros:
This is a flat rate, so there won't be any big bill surpsies month to month.
thumb_downCons:
This plan is still expensive, so in some ways, the bill will be an unpleasant surprise every month.

Clear Deal 24

Our Rating:
Plan Term: 24 Months
Plan Type: Tiered Rate

Honestly, this plan looks pretty similar to TXU's Saver's Discount 24 plan. They're both 24 month plans, and they both have bill credits. The Clear Deal 24 plan's bill credit is also $30, but it kicks in at a usage of 800 kWh, as opposed to 1200. The Energy Charge is still extremely high, however, so you'll find to squint to find any savings from the bill credit. The plan also has a $9.95 base monthly charge, and the plan doesn't include any TDU delivery charges. It's a 2 year plan, so you won't have to worry about any market pricing volatility for awhile, but locking in at high rates doesn't seem all that attractive, either.
thumb_upPros:
This plan has a bill credit.
thumb_downCons:
Even with a bill credit, this plan is expensive.

Flex Forward

Our Rating:
Plan Term: 1 Months
Plan Type: Month-to-Month

TXU's Flex Fowrad Plan is TXU's month-to-month/variable electricity plan option. Most electricity companies have a month-to-month plan. The benefits of this plan are that there is no contract, therefore no cancellation fees. The downside is your rate can fluctuate month-to-month by the provider, and that adjustment is rarely, if ever, cheaper. The risk is you can pay double the rate from month to month before you even notice.
thumb_upPros:
This plan has no contract and no cancellation fee.
thumb_downCons:
This plan's rates can fluctuate month-to-month, sometimes substantially.

Saver's Discount 24

Our Rating:
Plan Term: 24 Months
Plan Type: Tiered Rate

Where to start with TXU's Saver's Discount 24 plan? There's a lot going on here. For starters, it's a fixed rate, with a bill credit $30 at 1200 kWh of usage. But the Energy Charge is extremely high, so there really aren't much in the way of savings, even if you hit the bill credit. It's a two year contract, so you don't have to worry about price volatility for awhile, but at the same time, this rate is not competitive so locking in might not be the best idea anyway.
thumb_upPros:
This plan has a bill credit
thumb_downCons:
This plan is still extremely expensive

Clear Deal 12

Our Rating:
Plan Term: 12 Months
Plan Type: Tiered Rate

Honestly, this plan Is just the 12 month version of the Clear Deal 12 plan from TXU. Same Bill Credits, same thresholds, just a different term and different cancellation fee. The Clear Deal 12 plan's bill credit is also $30, and kicks in at a usage of 800 kWh. The Energy Charge is still extremely high, however, so unless you're the owner of a small home who doesn't use too much electricity, the plan rate will feel high. The plan also has a $9.95 base monthly charge, and the plan doesn't include any TDU delivery charges.
thumb_upPros:
This plan has a bill credit.
thumb_downCons:
Even with a bill credit, this plan is expensive.

Solar Value 12

Our Rating:
Plan Term: 12 Months
Plan Type: Tiered Rate

This TXU plan has a bill credit at 800 kWh usage, but the energy charge is so high it might not feel like much of a discount. Additionally, there is a $9.95 monthly recurring charge, and a $150 cancellation fee. It is an environmentally friendlly plan, utilizing 100% green energy, so customers can feel good about having a low carbon footprint and being good to mother earth.
thumb_upPros:
This plan has a $30 Bill Credit and uses 100% green energy.
thumb_downCons:
This plan is more expensive than the market average.

Saver's Discount 12

Our Rating:
Plan Term: 12 Months
Plan Type: Tiered Rate

TXU's Saver's Discount 12 is a plan being offered by TXU? It's a fixed rate plan, with a bill credit $30 at 1200 kWh of usage. But the Energy Charge is extremely high, so there really aren't much in the way of savings, even if you hit the bill credit. It's a one year contract, so you aren't hedging against market pricing volatility for very long, but at the same time, this rate is not competitive so you're not avoiding market volatility for long, nor are you saving money.
thumb_upPros:
This plan has a bill credit
thumb_downCons:
This plan is still expensive

Every month my due date is different. When we first signed up, our bill was due on the 21st of the month. The next month, I saw I was late since now it was due on the 18th. I changed on my calendar to reflect the new due date. Again this month, I'm past due because my due date has changed again! You can NEVER get an actual DUE DATE! Expect to be late on every payment. No doubt this is to force you to allow them into your bank account via monthly debit! Very unethical in my opinion

I called to discuss and was told my bill is correct because I'm getting a discount for free nights. Can someone please let me know how TXU is allowed to upcharge you after you have signed up for the plan of your choice? I feel I got scammed by TXU , once you enroll they start to suck you. Better stay away from them. Once you enroll they increase the early termination fee as well, mine was $150 at the beginning, and now they make $395. I have bought a solar buy pack plan, oncor says there is more surplus in a grid that I should get credit but so far I don't get any. Regretting staying with them.

Buyer Beware of the frequent $600 free gift cards offered by TXU. The always available sales reps are very excited & anxious to sign you up even if youre just calling to get info about the offer. Although they have cheaper rate plans they only offer you higher priced plans to make up for the free gift cards. These rates are fixed for 3 years & come with high early termination fees. The excited sales reps encourage & pressure you to sign up right away. They promise to take care of your current early termination fees. What my rep did NOT clarify to me was that TXU does NOT pay this fee it is deducted from your upcoming monthly bills. In my case it was 3 months. However, my current provider demanded the fee upfront & I did not have the funds to pay it up front. That became my own problem. TXU does NOT reimburse your current provider & they NEVER issue checks to them. They just get the ball rolling immediately by cancelling your existing contract as soon as you sign up! The full $600 gift cards are issued over a period of 2 years to make sure you dont cancel their services prematurely. They dont need to worry the hefty early termination fee is their backup. The supervisors & customer retention department reps I spoke to did not seem to care about my problem and did not bother to polite or patient. I cancelled my policy and resigned with my original provider where I now have to pay my early termination fee myself. Based on my experience I see this offer as a scam.

We called and asked if there were termination fees for our account and they said it would be $300. We have one property and one business, but for some reason there are two addresses (9513 and 9513 1/2). They did not tell us it would be $300 per address. When asked why they told us a lie, they just said "refer to the contract" and did not take responsibility for misleading us on the phone. After spending $20k with them, this seems petty and short-sighted. Do not recommend.

Switched to TXU from Gexa for SolarBuyBack BIG mistake

I decided to switch from Gexa Energy to TXU, because TXU stated they were offering the same deal as Gexa Energy for their solar buyback plan with just a slightly higher base fee, but for a three-year contract instead of having to renew every year. I believed them, and signed up for the plan that is supposed to sell and buy energy at the same cost, with a $14.95 base fee, and delivery fees that every service provider has. I have received two bills from TXU since switching to their plan, and the bills have been significantly higher, because they are putting the credits (the energy they buy back) in a bank that they are not allowing us access to. When I called TXU to question this the first person I spoke to kept putting me on hold, and then getting back on the line to tell me that he has checked with his assistant and the credits have been applied to bills already and that is what we owe. It took me three times at explaining their bill to them, and how the simple math works, for him to decide maybe I was right, but he did not know and needed to transfer me. The next person I spoke to basically told me they could not do anything because credits could not be used towards fees, and I was producing more than I was using. He stated the fees had to be paid every month regardless. I have never seen this kind of business, where they can hold peoples money, and charge them for things they are not utilizing.

This energy company offers the worse overall experience
When we signed up for TXU business, it was after researching the internet for better energy providers in TX. Although, we were aware that they we werent the least expensive.
From the moment we signed up, TXU heavy foreign-outsourcing incompetence haunted us consuming our last ounce of patience. They were determined to look bad even when it was time for us to pay the first bill which they sent to someone who had access to the business account over ten years ago and was no longer with our company, ignoring the new lengthy application setup we created with them at the onset.
The horrific experience encountered makes what social media publicized buying favorable reviews highly believable

I canceled my service at the beginning of January when I moved and I paid the balance due them. They then charged me $155 for the next month using my bank information. When contacted, they claimed they dont do their own billing and it would take as much as 5 days to verify the overpayment. (I guess that means they cant access key details of customers accounts?). They verified the overpayment and promised to issue a check, its now late April, I still have no refund, and whenever they are contacted, its just more excuses and the proverbial the check is in the mail. I would choose a different provider and pay month by month.

Dear TXU:

I was assigned to TXU Energy by mistake. TXU Energy refuses to cancel my account. Please assist me in closing this account.

I registered with Abundance Energy well before the deadline set by LPL for provider changes. I received confirmation from Abundance that I was its customer.

A few weeks later I received the Oops! postcard from LPL indicating that I neglected to choose a provider and that I was assigned to TXU. This postcard was widely reported on multiple broadcast and on-line news sources as a mistake.

Since then, I have received three notices from TXU indicating that I am its customer and that it will soon bill me.

I informed Samantha at Abundance Energy of this problem. She said that there was nothing she could do and that I should call TXU.

I called TXU Energy today. I spoke with Ashley. I confirmed with her my identity by giving her the account number TXU assigned to me [9000 6576 1434]. I also confirmed with her my address. She claimed to know nothing about the Oops! postcard mistake.

Ashley refused to close the account. I asked to speak with her supervisor. She refused. She demanded my drivers license number. I refused as she already confirmed who I was through my account number and my address. I again asked to speak with her supervisor. She agreed and put me on hold.

After a few minutes on hold, it was obvious that TXU was not going to take my call. I hung up.

I received notice of an outstanding bill from a collection agency that TXU hired. When I tried to login to the TXU portal to see what my last payment was and what usage they are billing me for, I learned I cannot login into the portal as the account has been 'closed'. I am unable to access all account history to determine if this is a legitiment charge or not. I responded to the collection agency asking for account history, last payment, billing usage, etc. and received no response. I submitted a request through TXU's online contact us form, and received no email follow up. I then woke up to a TXU account charge off on my credit report. I'm happy to pay this matter in full if it is a legit claim, but without access to account history I cannot tell. Now that a charge off has been reported on my credit report, I won't pay it unless the claim is legit and the charge off is deleted.

Jacob (HD89) provided great customer today. He was very polite and patient with giving me information about an energy plan to save on electricity charges.

I hung up.

Watch out for the little * in the description. Unlike other companies, the base charge and TDU charges are not offsetable so they are bleeding you dry every month regardless of how much energy credit you have. Go elsewhere. Silly me, I'm stuck for the duration.

I was forced to switch From TXU to Another Electric Co. (EnergyOgre) because of Extremely High Rates! My bills were Doubled from last year 2022 and I can't even buy food. Their Customer Service Dept. Won't help people like me.
Btw... I had been with TXU for over 14 years with No Disconnections! I am still a "NoBody" to TXU.

Sales person told me 9.1¢ per kwh, but when my First Bill came , it was 14.9¢ per kwh.I certainly would not recommend TXU ,and their CS people are certainly NO help at all.....BEWARE. I'm going back to my previous provider,,Gexa, at least they are honest. Shame on me for leaving them..I was told by TXU , that I would be getting a better rate with them.........NOT.
