Reliant Energy is one of the largest and most recognizable electricity providers in Texas. A former incumbent who's been selling electricity since before Texas deregulated, Reliant has plenty of bad reviews as well as lots of loyal customers. The biggest gripe from customers seems to be high prices and a general unwillingness to recommend to other Texans. They get the highest marks for ease of ordering and customer service.

If you have 2 meters they are a pain to deal with.
Reliant PO Box 3765 Houston TX. This company might be fine if you live in a house or apartment with only 1 meter. If you have a house and an out building with a separate meter they can be difficult to deal with. I have 2 meters at my residence. I have never had a problem with TXU. I got one bill and it was correct. Reliant offered me $600 credit if i switched. I called and signed up. I got switched around and told that I would have what they call a collective account. (That is Bad News) They applied the credit to one meter and said that my balance was $0. Then they sent me a disconnect notice. After a long phone time I found out that I owed more money so we paid it and they charged us a late fee. I had the same problem when they applied the second half of the credit. Every time you call them they send you a worthless survey. The people are always polite and try to be helpful but the system is broken and they can't fix it. You can't get your bill by email. You can wait for a paper bill but if you miss it because of travel or it gets lost in the mail they want to shut off your electric. I have been calling them to get the bill amount but you can't trust them to get it right. This month we had to pay twice because the amount I got on the phone was $16.22 short. It is not a big problem if you stay on top of it but if you don't you risk having your electric shut off. If they are not a lot cheaper than anyone else i am leaving Reliant.
Don't expect referral reward
5 Months and no reward. Called several times and was told I needed to wait more time. If what they are most recently promising is true, (as if I believe them) I won't see the reward until 6 months have passed. They are now offering me another $50 to renew my plan. They spend lots of money promoting this, but don't deliver. What gives?

Horrible Customer Service
After being an auto pay customer for 3 years, tried to get service at another address which was also put on auto pay. Never turned on electric on the start date (ie power went off) because they needed a drivers license (which they already had for previous address), but never received a call warning of issues. Sent a copy in of license that day but they would not turn on electric. Needed 2-3 days they said. Really? After 3 years of timely paying?? Lost all in refrigerator! Their supervisors read scripts to me. On hold for 5 to 15 minutes every time i called or was transferred to another number.

THIS COMPANY PROMISED A PROMOTION AND NEVER DELIVERED, FOR 7 MONTHS I FOUGHT TOOTH AND NAIL TRIED BEING PATIENT AND GOT SCREWED IN THE END. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY THEY DO BAIT AND SWITCHES. Hidden charges & Zero Customer help
Was sold on this energy company by a rep. who showed me that my energy bill would be lower with them. But just so happened to fail that only the bill with them would be lower. Not what the total would be with the additional charges from Oncor who would be providing the energy. Also gave my full info to set up auto pay that same day and on my first bill I was charged with late fees and reconnection fees the next day after the billing cycle because my account was never set up for auto pay. Tried calling to correct the issue or see what options I could take I was met with zero options and a huge bill even though I had previous set up the account with their own rep.
Reliant Energy Has been by far the worst provider I have ever had. Honestly If I could give Zero stars I would. Not worth anyone's time or money to ever go with this company.

Reliant!
Awful company. Avoid at all cost if you do not like being screwed over. Switch the due dates around and then charge disconnect fees on already overpriced electricity that they "rent" from somebody else. Then when you have a problem it's not 'their lines".

DONT FALL INTO THEIR NIGHTS & WEEKENDS SCAM
I am incredibly disappointed in Reliant Energy. I have used them for years in the past and rejoined them at my new house in February of 2024 with their Reliant Truly Free Nights 100% Solar 20 plan. After a couple of months with them, they gave me a "special offer" for being a good customer to upgrade my plan to their Reliant Keep Your Cash Nights & Weekends 36 plan. After reading about it, I decided to take the offer thinking of course I would stay committed to them for 2 more years when they were offering me such a good plan with free nights and weekends, an upgrade from just the free nights I originally had. Upon receiving a bill of $746.18, I couldn't understand how a measly N&W Discount of $28.05 was the electricity I had used during nights and on weekends. I finally talked to a customer support representative and was informed that apparently my "special offer" was actually a huge downgrade and punishment for committing to them for a longer period. I asked them to change my account back to my original plan with free nights since this one was horrid and was told they could not without me paying the $395 cancellation fee. This is absolutely outrageous. Why would they punish good customers for staying with them longer? All I want is for my plan to be switched back to having free nights since they misled me into thinking I was upgrading my account by accepting their special offer.

After over 20 yrs.
Due to receiving S.S. and my husband's medical situation, I've asked Reliant Repre. would it be possible to pay my bill on the date I receive my S.S. which is 2/12/25, the disconnection is for 2/6/25. I've been denied, denied, denied due to delayed past health issues and payments after over 20 years with Reliant. But, next year, when my contract is up, I will not use Reliant or renew with them. I'm able to pay the $414.00 on 2/12/25 but, even after begging, I was denied by 3 Latino Repre. who could care less and their English makes it rather difficult to understand what's being said by them. Note: I've been forced to try 211 for assistance telephone interview setup for 1/30/25. This is my first time in life asking for help, and it is very slow in coming.

TERRIBLE SERVICE
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the consistently poor service and lack of communication we have experienced as a business account holder.
We are an apartment complex with an existing account, and each time we contact your company to request that power be turned on in a vacant unit, the process is unnecessarily complicated. It appears that no one within your organization understands the nature of our account or the specific services we require. Calls are frequently transferred to multiple representatives who mistakenly treat us as if we are individual residents setting up new service, rather than a business account managing multiple units.
This lack of clarity and poor internal communication has caused significant delays. On one occasion, power was not turned on as requested, resulting in the loss of an entire day of work. Additionally, important forms we were told to expect were never sent, further exacerbating the situation.
As a business account, we rely on prompt and accurate service to manage our operations efficiently. The current level of service is unacceptable and falls far short of our expectations.
Please ensure that your team is properly trained to handle business accounts like ours and that processes are streamlined to avoid further misunderstandings and delays.

Terrible Customer Service
Took me abut THREE MONTHS to figure out why Reliant was cancelling my services. Turns out there was an issue with my license, something about the back not being able to get verified. They called me letting me know I had to resubmit a photo, which I did. I never heard back so I assumed all was well. Turns out that wasn't the case, but they never made an attempt to email, text, or call me! It took me multiple attempts and hours to finally talk to a representative, only to get hung up on for making her wait a few seconds! Not to mention that even though Reliant cancelled my service, they still charged me $150 for "early cancellation fee"! Terrible service and terrible website to boot!

The most inefficient company I've ever worked with
I'm an apartment manager and often I need power on in my apartments after someone moves out. Normally, when I use any other provider, the power can be back on in 5-10 minutes. A click of the button...but with Reliant, (I've been suffering because of them for 4 months now) I have constant log in issues, 10 minutes chatting with an AI bot, 10 more minutes with a live chat agent, 30 minutes on the phone with someone who needs the same information I have now already given 3 times, an email had to be sent to fix yet another login issue, all to be told that it may or may not be on within 24 hours!!!...I wasted an hour of my busy day that I did not have to waste...so I might as well waste a little more time making sure to voice my constant frustration with this Mickey Mouse operation called Reliant...if your time is valuable please go with anyone else..., but if you have time to kill, and no interest in making a profit for your employer, then by all means go with Reliant. They will see to it that you burn an hour of your day, and will walk away just as uninformed as when you started...hour wasted, and nothing resolved....thanks Reliant, you suck in a very special way....time to have discussions with my supervisors about making a drastically needed switch in our electric providers...after all, we have thousands of homes to service and I'm sure someone out there will be happy to be efficient in the interest of being a decent business partner who wishes to make a profitable business relationship...Reliant simply isn't it....BEWARE!!!!...Avoid Reliant at all cost.

Reliant will scam you!
I contacted reliant energy to see about switching my service and the rep said she found me a "fixed rate" of 10.55 pkwh. I asked if there would be any additional fees or charges and she stated the only other fee besides the normal tax could be if we were under 1000kwh, there would be a $9.95 charge. I reiterated again, that it was a flat, fixed rate of 10.55 cents pkwh because I'm currently paying a fixed 14 cents and did not want to pay more than that and she stated "yes it is a fixed flat fee, not variable "
I have this call recorded!
Then I received the email confirmation for my new account and it stated a variable rate of up to 18.6 cents! total scam!

Worst, expensive and deceiving
I was billed by Reliant with a due date of August 29th. On September 4th, at 3:43 AM, they issued a disconnection notice. I found out about it later that day and made the payment by 1 PM, before any service was actually interrupted.
Despite paying on the same day, I was charged both a late payment fee and a disconnection fee. How is it fair to penalize someone twice for a single late payment? Has anyone else gone through this? Im wondering if its even legal to charge two different fees for the same issue.
Id also advise anyone considering Reliant to look elsewhere. Their plans are expensive, loaded with hidden fees and penalties, and their customer service is extremely rude. There are much better, cheaper options available.

Incorrect Billing - difference in weekly summary & the monthly bill
Monthly usage shown in Reliant App/website is not same as the bill which i got. it shows double the value

Rip Off
Whatever you do, do NOT go to Reliant. They will charge you fees for everything. I have been charged $20.00 every month for 3 months because I was a few days late paying. I had direct deposit this month but they still charged me the late fee WHEN I WASN'T LATE! Then I asked if I switched, how much would I be charged. I was told a $150 charge just to move services. I hate this company and will tell everyone I know never to use them!!!

Worst Company
Reliant lies to their customer, they will give you somewhere better rate, but they eventually the highest in the market. I will never recommend anyone.

Nightmare & lies
So I had to put down a small deposit, which I did, no big deal. However, despite paying for it, it continued to show up on my bill that I needed to pay it. WTF? Took a rediculous amount of time to get this resolved. Was brought on with a certain plan that had a membership with it for walmart, ok, cool. Except you can't have it for 60 days, and if your payment is 1 day late (not kidding, yes, there were obviously stupid circumstances involved, or it would have been on time) that 60 days resets again. No exceptions.
But, my 60 days didn't even start until last month anyway, because they didn't even put it on my account back in November! So, while I Should have had it long before now, I am now starting 60 days over again, because of this. Don't go with these people. Not to mention, somehow, my bill went up 200 kwh...on days that I wasn't even home??? Funny how that is happening? And they just say, "Well, that's what the meter reads! Oh well!"
Contract be damned, I'm looking for another electricity company.

Criminals
I singed up for the budget plan 130.00 a month for 12 months, that's not the case at all they just raised it to 162.00 what good is signing up for a budget plan if they dont honor it. i wanted to changed my rates prior to doing said plan, and they told me it would be a 300 cancelation fee to get better rates can u even imagine i am 100% disgusted and would NEVER suggest reliant to anyone EVER

Reliant is expensive
Waiting for contract to expire on this Conservation 18 plan (my 2nd plan, I had to pay to term out of the Average billing which was a nitemare). Hottest bill cycles, I use less than 1000 kwh at $ .11 kwh & my bottomline bill is 185.00! My service is no better than other Energy companies I used in the past that were half the price. Can't wait to leave Sorry Reliant!

DONT FALL INTO THEIR NIGHTS & WEEKENDS SCAM
I am incredibly disappointed in Reliant Energy. I have used them for years in the past and rejoined them at my new house in February of 2024 with their Reliant Truly Free Nights 100% Solar 20 plan. After a couple of months with them, they gave me a "special offer" for being a good customer to upgrade my plan to their Reliant Keep Your Cash Nights & Weekends 36 plan. After reading about it, I decided to take the offer thinking of course I would stay committed to them for 2 more years when they were offering me such a good plan with free nights and weekends, an upgrade from just the free nights I originally had. Upon receiving a bill of $746.18, I couldn't understand how a measly N&W Discount of $28.05 was the electricity I had used during nights and on weekends. I finally talked to a customer support representative and was informed that apparently my "special offer" was actually a huge downgrade and punishment for committing to them for a longer period. I asked them to change my account back to my original plan with free nights since this one was horrid and was told they could not without me paying the $395 cancellation fee. This is absolutely outrageous. Why would they punish good customers for staying with them longer? All I want is for my plan to be switched back to having free nights since they misled me into thinking I was upgrading my account by accepting their special offer.

After over 20 yrs.
Due to receiving S.S. and my husband's medical situation, I've asked Reliant Repre. would it be possible to pay my bill on the date I receive my S.S. which is 2/12/25, the disconnection is for 2/6/25. I've been denied, denied, denied due to delayed past health issues and payments after over 20 years with Reliant. But, next year, when my contract is up, I will not use Reliant or renew with them. I'm able to pay the $414.00 on 2/12/25 but, even after begging, I was denied by 3 Latino Repre. who could care less and their English makes it rather difficult to understand what's being said by them. Note: I've been forced to try 211 for assistance telephone interview setup for 1/30/25. This is my first time in life asking for help, and it is very slow in coming.

TERRIBLE SERVICE
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the consistently poor service and lack of communication we have experienced as a business account holder.
We are an apartment complex with an existing account, and each time we contact your company to request that power be turned on in a vacant unit, the process is unnecessarily complicated. It appears that no one within your organization understands the nature of our account or the specific services we require. Calls are frequently transferred to multiple representatives who mistakenly treat us as if we are individual residents setting up new service, rather than a business account managing multiple units.
This lack of clarity and poor internal communication has caused significant delays. On one occasion, power was not turned on as requested, resulting in the loss of an entire day of work. Additionally, important forms we were told to expect were never sent, further exacerbating the situation.
As a business account, we rely on prompt and accurate service to manage our operations efficiently. The current level of service is unacceptable and falls far short of our expectations.
Please ensure that your team is properly trained to handle business accounts like ours and that processes are streamlined to avoid further misunderstandings and delays.

Terrible Customer Service
Took me abut THREE MONTHS to figure out why Reliant was cancelling my services. Turns out there was an issue with my license, something about the back not being able to get verified. They called me letting me know I had to resubmit a photo, which I did. I never heard back so I assumed all was well. Turns out that wasn't the case, but they never made an attempt to email, text, or call me! It took me multiple attempts and hours to finally talk to a representative, only to get hung up on for making her wait a few seconds! Not to mention that even though Reliant cancelled my service, they still charged me $150 for "early cancellation fee"! Terrible service and terrible website to boot!

The most inefficient company I've ever worked with
I'm an apartment manager and often I need power on in my apartments after someone moves out. Normally, when I use any other provider, the power can be back on in 5-10 minutes. A click of the button...but with Reliant, (I've been suffering because of them for 4 months now) I have constant log in issues, 10 minutes chatting with an AI bot, 10 more minutes with a live chat agent, 30 minutes on the phone with someone who needs the same information I have now already given 3 times, an email had to be sent to fix yet another login issue, all to be told that it may or may not be on within 24 hours!!!...I wasted an hour of my busy day that I did not have to waste...so I might as well waste a little more time making sure to voice my constant frustration with this Mickey Mouse operation called Reliant...if your time is valuable please go with anyone else..., but if you have time to kill, and no interest in making a profit for your employer, then by all means go with Reliant. They will see to it that you burn an hour of your day, and will walk away just as uninformed as when you started...hour wasted, and nothing resolved....thanks Reliant, you suck in a very special way....time to have discussions with my supervisors about making a drastically needed switch in our electric providers...after all, we have thousands of homes to service and I'm sure someone out there will be happy to be efficient in the interest of being a decent business partner who wishes to make a profitable business relationship...Reliant simply isn't it....BEWARE!!!!...Avoid Reliant at all cost.

Reliant will scam you!
I contacted reliant energy to see about switching my service and the rep said she found me a "fixed rate" of 10.55 pkwh. I asked if there would be any additional fees or charges and she stated the only other fee besides the normal tax could be if we were under 1000kwh, there would be a $9.95 charge. I reiterated again, that it was a flat, fixed rate of 10.55 cents pkwh because I'm currently paying a fixed 14 cents and did not want to pay more than that and she stated "yes it is a fixed flat fee, not variable "
I have this call recorded!
Then I received the email confirmation for my new account and it stated a variable rate of up to 18.6 cents! total scam!

Worst, expensive and deceiving
I was billed by Reliant with a due date of August 29th. On September 4th, at 3:43 AM, they issued a disconnection notice. I found out about it later that day and made the payment by 1 PM, before any service was actually interrupted.
Despite paying on the same day, I was charged both a late payment fee and a disconnection fee. How is it fair to penalize someone twice for a single late payment? Has anyone else gone through this? Im wondering if its even legal to charge two different fees for the same issue.
Id also advise anyone considering Reliant to look elsewhere. Their plans are expensive, loaded with hidden fees and penalties, and their customer service is extremely rude. There are much better, cheaper options available.

Incorrect Billing - difference in weekly summary & the monthly bill
Monthly usage shown in Reliant App/website is not same as the bill which i got. it shows double the value

Rip Off
Whatever you do, do NOT go to Reliant. They will charge you fees for everything. I have been charged $20.00 every month for 3 months because I was a few days late paying. I had direct deposit this month but they still charged me the late fee WHEN I WASN'T LATE! Then I asked if I switched, how much would I be charged. I was told a $150 charge just to move services. I hate this company and will tell everyone I know never to use them!!!

Don't expect referral reward
5 Months and no reward. Called several times and was told I needed to wait more time. If what they are most recently promising is true, (as if I believe them) I won't see the reward until 6 months have passed. They are now offering me another $50 to renew my plan. They spend lots of money promoting this, but don't deliver. What gives?

Worst Company
Reliant lies to their customer, they will give you somewhere better rate, but they eventually the highest in the market. I will never recommend anyone.

Nightmare & lies
So I had to put down a small deposit, which I did, no big deal. However, despite paying for it, it continued to show up on my bill that I needed to pay it. WTF? Took a rediculous amount of time to get this resolved. Was brought on with a certain plan that had a membership with it for walmart, ok, cool. Except you can't have it for 60 days, and if your payment is 1 day late (not kidding, yes, there were obviously stupid circumstances involved, or it would have been on time) that 60 days resets again. No exceptions.
But, my 60 days didn't even start until last month anyway, because they didn't even put it on my account back in November! So, while I Should have had it long before now, I am now starting 60 days over again, because of this. Don't go with these people. Not to mention, somehow, my bill went up 200 kwh...on days that I wasn't even home??? Funny how that is happening? And they just say, "Well, that's what the meter reads! Oh well!"
Contract be damned, I'm looking for another electricity company.

Criminals
I singed up for the budget plan 130.00 a month for 12 months, that's not the case at all they just raised it to 162.00 what good is signing up for a budget plan if they dont honor it. i wanted to changed my rates prior to doing said plan, and they told me it would be a 300 cancelation fee to get better rates can u even imagine i am 100% disgusted and would NEVER suggest reliant to anyone EVER

Horrible Customer Service
After being an auto pay customer for 3 years, tried to get service at another address which was also put on auto pay. Never turned on electric on the start date (ie power went off) because they needed a drivers license (which they already had for previous address), but never received a call warning of issues. Sent a copy in of license that day but they would not turn on electric. Needed 2-3 days they said. Really? After 3 years of timely paying?? Lost all in refrigerator! Their supervisors read scripts to me. On hold for 5 to 15 minutes every time i called or was transferred to another number.

Reliant is expensive
Waiting for contract to expire on this Conservation 18 plan (my 2nd plan, I had to pay to term out of the Average billing which was a nitemare). Hottest bill cycles, I use less than 1000 kwh at $ .11 kwh & my bottomline bill is 185.00! My service is no better than other Energy companies I used in the past that were half the price. Can't wait to leave Sorry Reliant!
